Cheers guys, they're the folding ones so no probs with wire beads. I've watched a few videos on how to put them on properly and I'm going to get some astans yellow tape as the superstar stuff makes it difficult to get the bead in the centre well......I think!

I'm a bit hesitant about using fairy to get them on as I'd be stuffed when out if I got a flat unless I carry a bottle around with me :) if all else fails I'll give the fairy a go though. Will update tomorrow with either smiles or foul language.....

Here's some explanation about tire/rim sizes, sometimes the tyres aren't a good match to the rim size, its all to do with sizing & the ETRTO markings. I don't fully understand it myself, but I had a very similar problem with a folding tyre, it was impossible to fit.

http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

One useful tool for fitting stubborn tyres is one of these Var jobbies. Plus a bit of Fairy Liquid.

http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b65s72p1263&rs=gb

If not one of these, bit more workshop than the VAR one, but works in the same way

The ETRTO is do to with the spoke length calcs.

The problem is just that different countries (or manufacturers) err on the side of caution with either their tyres or rims. I had some Bontrager rims (US) and tried getting my Continental (EU) tyres on. I broke three levers and a spoon before giving up. They fit fine on the new Mavic (EU) rims and the DT Swiss (EU) rims on the Singlespeed.

Another guy I used to ride with rolled his bontrager tyres off his mavic rims.

Sorry its not just about calculating spoke length, its all things to do with tyres & rims

I do apologise.

We always used the ETRTO acronym specifically for the measurement of where the spoke nipples would sit thus I always thought ETRTO stood for some long winded way of saying this, not the tyre/wheel/rim engineering governing body.

Cheers Mavic I'll have a look at those. Managed to get the rear tyre on tonight without a tube using a tyre lever only once, looks like its 99% technique 1%brute force as opposed to the opposite way around!

Can I be really cheeky and ask whether anyone has a spare chainring bolt I could buy? It looks like my rear mech hanger is (was) held on with one so I don't need a whole set.

Cheers

Hiya guys,

just wondering if cannock chase is as good as everyone makes out? Tempted to drive down on saturday morning and spend the day there. I've only ever done dalby red route and then last weekend mastiles lane on the dales.

Red route: feels like 85% uphill, 15% downhill, but very rideable trails and well constructed. Would definitely go back.

Mastiles lane: the first 1-2 miles climbed 1000ft and we weren't properly warmed up, bits of it simply weren't rideable with giant boulders and rocks everywhere, then the 'amazing descent' at the end was like trying to ride down a vertical wall.. It made the slog at dalby seem like the best day ever.

But cannock sounds like it's in another league? Any tips/pointers/recommendations? Anything you dislike about it?

Cannock is ok.
I went round with DMC a couple of weeks ago and had a good ride.
Not sure what state it's in at the moment though but if you do come down, I'll meet you over there.
It's always good to ride different places.

The reviews sound positive. When you say about what state it's in at the minute, are you relating to the recent bad weather? Or something else?

I'll drop you a pm speedplay, I'm a full on heffer at the minute so will be bimbling (Drew carey style )

Oi you mean mean boy......but I guess you are correct also! :-(

As said to you on my message on Facebook.....the trails were getting battered when I last went couple of months ago......so I imagine the rain may have trashed it some more. Who knows.

Would join you, but it will probably be chucking it down....however, more critical than that - I have zero pennies till payday courtesy of a mahoooosive gas bill.

Not to worry mate, I'm gonna hang fire and see what the weather's like and also if my car is driveable as it's got a massive boost leak somewhere after the turbo..

Check here for the main site....

And here is the route map that can be printed....
http://chasetrails.co.uk/images/maps/ftd_cc_map.pdf

Unless anyone has any objections, may aswell do the full 15 miles......but it will not be a race. I will probably end up walking most of the "ups" so i can enjoy the "downs" as I am proper unfit at moment.

Don't worry if you haven't got all the tools yet, I'm sure we can bail you out between those of us going.
There's a cafe there too so don't load yourself up with too much food, just munchies etc for on the way round.
Probably worth sticking a waterproof top in your kit though.

Mate, the first couple of miles are pretty flat and is a very thin technical section with some rock gardens, some fun drops etc and is a good warm up......actually a good start. Unlike Llandegla that starts with 3 or so miles of uphill. Lol.
