View Full Version : Setting off a speed camera

So...
Starting with a stationary SV650 level with a GATSO speed camera, could you set it off on acceleration? :)
In a 30 zone? 40 zone? 50 zone?
Could you do it from starting at the first little white line accross the road? :cool:
Anyone tried? :o

Whilst drunk I spent some quite considerable time trying to set a Speed Camera off with a Toy Car in my hand then running as fast as I could then jumping past it.
I was very drunk. 2 hours not one flash. :)

whilst the workmen were setting up one of those flashing speed camera signs:
http://www.messagemaker.co.uk/Images/Traffic.jpg
i was waiting at the lights they had set up to control traffic, i managed to go from a standing start to setting the sign off (around 28/29mph true speed) in the space of about 20 metres...
made me smile:mrgreen:
i've also found out the 30 limit ones that pop up how fast you're travelling top out at around 56mph...

most unlikely, and the higher the speed limit even less likely. but what about hitting the speed cam at the legal limit and then accelerating, might get a flash then i reckon?

however did you find that out :roll:
you naughty boy! :smt079
Why the f** would you intentionally try to set off a speed camera?
:confused:

just idle banter davido. ;)
i suppose if you know how they tick then you might be able to use it to your advantage. 1 in the eye for the establishment.:smt019

I was hoping someone (Lone wolf or Baph usually ;)) would come along and work it out :-P
Come on, its about 20 metres you'd have, sv 0-60 in 3.65 seconds, how far til you hit 35mph?

I was just wondering as I rode past one today. Not that I'd actually want to do it!

NO, you wanted to beat it, didnt you?:D
Oh its a maths question.
Sod this, I'm off for a tea. Don't do maths me. I is well too proper smart for that rubbish.

It's been a good few years since I've done this but i'll take a crack...
u = initial velocity
v = final velocity
a = acceleration
s = displacement
t = time
60mph = 96.56km/h = 26.82m/s
a = v / t
a = 26.82 / 3.65 = 7.35m/s^2
35mph = 56.32km/h = 15.65m/s
v^2 = u^2 + 2as
(15.65)^2 = 0^2 + 2(7.35)s
(15.65)^2 / 2(7.35) = s
244.92 / 14.7 = s
s = 16.67m
So yes, you would set it off from a 20m start :) (assuming linear acceleration!)
I've probably made a complete hash of that but I'm going off rusty maths mechanics A level!
*edit* the superscript "squared" didn't work so i've used ^ instead..
That is very impressive:cool:
The only time i've set off a camera, i got three points + £60:rolleyes:

I haven't sat through it with a calculator, and I'm about half way through converting the loft, but it looks about right to me.
Although, realistically, as you rightly said, liner acceleration assumed (and a bike wouldn't achieve that)... and it may be a tad tricky to keep the front wheel on the floor.
I reckon it's do-able, possibly. Personally, I'd struggle to set off a 50mph camera, but then, I don't think I'll try it either.

There's one in South Yorkshire that will go up to 99mph... I tested it at above that on a 350LC.

Get this man a prize! A compass or box set of Babylon 5 should probably do it... ;)
2 letters.
no
if you were pushing the bike... and didn't have the engine running...;-)

look into my eyes ,not around the eyes.. into my eyes...
And your under...
Please don't post anything like this again....
'cos your far to brainey for us lot...:smt019
that is all.
ps, only joking. :takeabow:
