Hi All,

After some great advice on lowering seat heights (I'm only 5'4") I finally got myself an SV650SX (from a nice guy up near Ponty), so thought I should introduce myself to the local community - Hi.

Can anyone recommend a good place to get spares: the bike I bought has need of some repairs (I already got brake levers from eBay, but still need handlebar end, indicator, probably some new plastics etc).

Also I'm going to have to get a 33Bhp restrictor fitted - can anyone recommend a place for getting that done? (I'm in Chepstow so near to Bristol, Newport, Cardiff etc).

It will take me a while to get on the road but you'll recognise me as my new pride and joy has a custom paint job (white and blue) and a scratch or two to add individuality. Sadly I won't be about before the Christmas meet, but will try to get involved in the new year.

Hi, aftermarket bar ends and indicators are available everywhere unless you want exact ones from the SV. Try SouthWales Superbikes in Newport or Fowlers in Bristol or Bevan's in Cardiff. As for new plastics, here or ebay are the main places. As for 33bhp the nearest bike garage i know to chepstow is SouthWales superbikes or Cwmbran Motorcycles who'll fit them. But it will cost you £200 because of stupid FI international charging you when you can buy the restrictors yourself and restrict it yourself (or pay someone to do it). There might be a local bike garage in Chepstow but i've not come across one (i'm in newport which is why i suggested cwmbran motorcycles). If you sourced the spares yourself, you can contact a local garage to fit them or someone on here will give you a hand with an indicator or bar end as they are pretty simple to put on. Plastics if your going for a respray might be cheaper to get them repaired too and then sprayed.

Sorry for the longish reply if you can make any sense of it let me know. And don't forget to post a reply in the wanted forum.

If you fancy coming into the Forest of Dean there is a bike shop in Coleford, BikerDean, and one in Cinderford, Haines & Co. Both are in the 'phonebook and I can recommend them both, although for something like a 33bhp restrictor I would probably go for Haines & Co.

BTW, welcome to the site etc, etc.

Hi Heather, I'm not in your neck o the woods, but HElllllllooooo!. I think I know which bike you have bought actually, was it from a fellow orger?
Rather than searching for new panels, maybe I could suggest, taking them to someone who specialises in car repairs. In that I mean..up here we have a company that deals with bashed cars, and they put panels back to like you'd never believe, matching the colours up. If you could find one down there, any decent one should be able to deal with your custom paint, and repair it back to its former glory. I've got a black cuvy thats currently got a nice crack up the fairing, and replacement ones are like rocking donkey poo, so I am going down this route, as every colour is available apart from mine, unless they are more bashed than mine!

hi Heather welcome welcome,

as far as a garage goes, i cant recommend a guy called rich based in portishead nr bristol (just over the bridge from you) enough, there is a thread about him here http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=110871

as standard he charges about £30 an hour labour, less than most, but whats good is he is self employed from home, can collect your bike if need be and return it too you, he has lots of racing and garage experience and is generally a top bloke.

ive taken my bike to him a few times now and he always charges less than he first says (which is already better than anywhere else), also i dont have a garage and tools as yet and hes let me go to his and use his tools and guide me through some things like full oil and filter change, spark plugs change etc etc, basic stuff but good to have him there to guide me, he didnt charge me either as i guess he sees it as an investment for the future (but i did give him some beer tokens anyway)

sorry for the long story but cant recommend him enough!!

Hi All
Hello and welcome, sorry for the delay.

After some great advice on lowering seat heights (I'm only 5'4")
You'll be wanting some longer suspension linkages, there are plenty about as the SV is very popular with the vertically challenged. Have a look at CJ Accessories (http://www.cjaccessories.co.uk/home.php?cat=250), another option would be to have the OEM seat altered by having some foam removed.

Also I'm going to have to get a 33Bhp restrictor fitted - can anyone recommend a place for getting that done?
A Suzuki dealer, the best 33bhp kit for the SV is the official Suzuki one in my opinion and experience.

It will take me a while to get on the road but you'll recognise me as my new pride and joy has a custom paint job (white and blue)
Any pic's?

Hi lass,

Get your restriction done at JHS in bristol, theyre great guys. Honest and they wont rip you off for restricting your bike.

Just a word of advice, Fowlers are known locally in bristol as Fowl-ups. If youve ever seen any of the monkeys working in their workshop, youd agree. I wont go near it with a barge pole. Theyre good to buy stuff from (all-be-it expensive) as theyve got a huge showroom.

You can source some lowering 'dogbones' from ebay, £15 a pop and theyll drop the rear end down appreciably. My SV was owned by a lass before-hand, dropped the bike down and it was a tad too low for me. I come in at 19st and the bike squatted under my weight lol. Fitting the kit is simple enough with an assistant, Youll need a 17mm socket and extension bar + ratchet, and a 14mm socket. Some lithium based grease might be a help and all you need do is have your assistant push the bike supporting the weight on its stand, you lie underneath and undo the bolts, pull axels out and pop new plates on, push back through, plate on other side and tighten up bolts. Simple!

I know im being a bit far out for you Heather, but HRS in Bristol do some great gear and are the cheapest for miles around. The guy inside got a bit of an attitude but that doesnt put me off cos the prices are so damn good. If youre down bristol any time gimme a shout, i can guide you to HRS :D

Hi all,
Thanks for the welcome and advice.
I finally got the bike home, cleaned, and put in a nice warm garage (had to get a friend to ride it until I get it restricted - Jealous - me? well, maybe just a tad. "I wanna ride my bike" she wailed).
Interestingly it seems to be quite solid performance up to 6000rpm, then rather sluggish beyond that - perhaps it needs some tuning? Does this sound familiar to anyone? It wasn't all that cold a day (damp but not raining).
I phoned JHS in the end (Ironically a Fowlers guy also suggested I call them) - they are going to get it on the Dyno and see what is up, fix it, then get in the restictor so I can finally ride home!!

Great news that you have your bike home and in the garage :-D. When you speak to JHS again ask them about lowering your bike. I had my Yamaha YZF R125 lowered by them. They also fixed my Ninja 250R after my off and they did a great job . Foxy :-D

Its actually a funny one that.

Restricted SV's are poo in the lower revs, and when you pin the throttle past 6000rpm, the bike takes off almost as if its full power. Feels like a power band from a two stroke basically.

If it wasnt restricted its gonna be an animal full power (i rode my sv full power NAUGHTY NAUGHTY! :smt019) it was managable but not scare your pants off.

JHS are good guys, theyll sort you out with your bike!

What kind of restriction do you have fitted?

It is quite the opposite actually, a 33bhp SV feels strangled in the upper rev range when compared to a full power one. Low down grunt is still the same, it is the bhp that is restricted not the torque.

I have only ridden a few, I have a full licence and ride full power SV's daily so I think I might notice where the restricted SV is lacking.

My mates K3 sv650s handles much the same way.

His acceleration just like mine, is pants up to about 6-7k rpm, then takes off. Thats the way JHS restricts them. Torque seems restricted lower revs too, then goes like poo off a shovel!

HP Obviously is restricted too, mine only chucks out 28.5bhp, but im still happy with the progress i can make on mine as i go to and from london often.

Do you know about carb vs. ECU? I'm guessing with an ECU based restrictor you can pretty much restrict it any way you like but for my older carb machine I'm particularly keen to keep the low end torque (that's why I went for an SV650 in the first place).

Perhaps I need to go chat to JHS or reps first - with my bike seeming to be poor at the top end the last thing I want is to make it poor at the bottom end too :-(

the reason people on 33bhp go for the SV is, that retricted it does not lose its "grunt" and is capeable of keeping up with an unrestricted bike up to say 80mph ish

AFAIK

+ 1, the SV is a great bike to have restricted as the V-twin engine still produces all of its low down torque which something many IL4 suffer with.

The best restriction kit for a Curvy SV is the official Suzuki one, this changes the diaphrams....
