Yes I know it is still some distance away. The date is significant. Don't know what I am talking about? Check my signature for a brief reminder.

So what do we all want to do? Discuss.

Si, I was thinking about something like this a couple of weeks ago. A ride out on the day would be tasteful

When I read this I thought you meant AR09...

A ride out on the day would be tasteful

... but this made me realise otherwise.

Obviously I never met Mark, but would most likely show up to whatever if it would be appropriate for me to be there. Coincidentally I dropped into Fox's today, and found the plaque that had been put up. Top work those of you who arranged that.

rideout sounds good to me maybe go to fish pond hill or what ever that place is called via fox's

I considered suggesting something the other day, but got sidetracked.

I was going to suggest an extended FOT, basically a retread of the same route as last year, iyswim. But taking it a bit easier down the A4074 from Fox's this time.

I was rather looking for idea's rather than who was in or not. I expected everyone to say they were in. ;)

Seems Ogden's suggestion makes the most sense am open to others as well. I was not there last year so have no idea what the route is. I will follow the crowd.

I might try and hire a bike for this... or come along in the car..

Seems Ogden's suggestion makes the most sense am open to others as well. I was not there last year so have no idea what the route is. I will follow the crowd.

The route, taking the Shire Horse as a starting point, was...

A404 / A4130 -> Henley
A 4130 / A4074 -> Shillingford
A329 -> Thame
A418 -> Aylesbury
A413 -> Buckingham
A421 -> Tingewick
A4421 -> Bicester
A41 / B4011 -> Thame
A329 -> Shillingford
A4074 -> Fox's

There aren't many junctions to worry about so it's easy to stop at the end of each stretch and regroup if the concertina effect has taken hold.

Warthog
26-01-09, 07:51 PM
I am not sure if I can make it :(. I have already agreed to be in Stafford that weekend for the other half's parent's wedding anniversary :(. Ogden's idea sounds good though in any case, I'll try to make it.

But, conversely, it's not a pilgrimage. If people can't make it, or don't want to for some reason, that's OK, surely!

Not a good passenger!

I've found somewhere who rents bikes, a CBR600RR for £75 a day with £500 deposit looks the best deal so far. Think i'll book that up if I don't find any better.

(Chances are both mine'll be running too)

ogden
27-01-09, 12:19 PM
So long as you have the bike insured to be on the road, if he has CIHAGM insurance (aka Can I Have A Go Mate, TPO on bikes not belonging to the policyholder) it'll be fine.

So long as you have the bike insured to be on the road, if he has CIHAGM insurance (aka Can I Have A Go Mate, TPO on bikes not belonging to the policyholder) it'll be fine.

Do people really take this insurance? Is it expensive?

I will contact my insurance and see what the cost is for having a named rider added for one day.

You've probably got it? - My policy let's me ride other people's (insured) bikes (third party only) - be in the small print somewhere.

but Nick doesn't have a bike policy - hence unlikely his car policy will cover him (although strangely mine with the NFU did cover me for bikes)

Yes I have. But as Phil says, Nick does not have a motorcycle. I would of thought getting insurance purely to 'joy ride' other peoples bikes would be seriously expensive.

philbut
27-01-09, 01:15 PM
I have added people to car policies on a per day basis before for around £10 or £15. I can't see why it should be any different for bikes.

FOT sounds fine to me. I like the idea of being more adventurous and making a weekend of it, but maybe we could do that on another weekend?

I think it would be ideal if we can make this event so that it is easy for as many people to come as possible so the FOT works well for this purpose.

A4074 / A4130 from Fox's to Henley
A4155 from Henley to Medmenham

I have just spoken with Pete (Mark's Dad) again. They would very much like to know of numbers attending and what sort of time (within an hour) we will be arriving after the ride. I would obviously like to be able to give them the details as soon as I can.

Can we start looking at this in earnest and arranging timings? I will include a poll so I have a good idea of the numbers as well. There will be refreshments at the house offered. As I know Deb's I am quite sure it will be a good spread so make sure your hungry when we arrive there. :)

...gives a distance of 109 miles and a duration of 3 hours. On the basis that a basic FOT is 55 miles and can be done in an hour, I'd be inclined to knock a bit off that estimate.

Or we can do Henley in both directions, which takes it up another 20 miles or so.

ogden
30-03-09, 12:06 PM
9am departure? Gadzooks!

Lets say 10am departure from the Shire Horse, should see us pass Aylesbury a bit after 11am and back in Medmenham between 1pm and 2pm. I have no idea what pace people will be riding at so arrival times are approximate.

Those times assume people having a full tank of fuel and being ready to leave at the appointed time. Not turning up with no fuel, or a pasty they want to eat, or a full bladder they insist on servicing, etc.

Umm, we can make a detour via Fox's if there are people to collect (it's not quite on the route). ETA some time after 12.30 but exact time would depend on riding pace.

Only point I can offer a definite time is the Shire Horse at/before 10am.

The pace will be whatever the pace will be - I suspect it'll be faster at the front and slower at the back, but we'll hang about to let people catch up at each major junction. One of the drawbacks of leading the ride is living my life looking in my mirrors to check I can see somebody behind me.

For fuel there's a BP (or similar) garage on the left about half a mile further up the A4 past the Shire Horse. Can't miss it.
