when the bikes been standing on its stands waiting for good weather i go out ev now and again to start her and admire her sexy good looks, sometimes the oil light stays on and it doesnt go off? if i turn the ignition off and start her again then it goes out? any ideas or is the oil just simply draining to the sump? the oil level looks quite low but it was dealer serviced 7 months ago? is it due for a change already? its only done about 2k on that oil.

If the bike's on its stand & the oil pickup is on the right hand side, it'll be picking up & running on froth - not a brilliant lubricant!
Probably due for an oil change anyway.

"Oil level looks quite low"

How long have you been on this forum?Get a grip and sort it out.

Oil light stays on sometimes? Level looks low?

Alarm bells?

Seriously fella, I wouldn't crank it until you've at least sorted the levels out when cold. Once that's sorted, if you still get the light staying on sometimes (and you're certain there's enough oil in), start looking at a dodgy pressure sensor/wiring.

Doh heres me thinking main dealers look after that for you Doh

Are you checking it whilst its on the paddock stand, if so that may be why.

Drop it off the stands and check it then.

i dropped it off the stands and its just above the low marker, i have no reason to be concerned about that thats why u have a max and a min, just strange that it only happens wen stood? a reset of the ignition turns it off.

The oil light is an 'Oil pressure warning light'. If it stays on or comes on when the engine is running you should stop the engine straight away or you're risking starving bearings of vital lubrication. Oil generally becomes thinner as it get older and more contaminated. This combined with the low oil level is probably causing your low oil pressure. If I were you I'd do an oil change and make sure it's kept topped up to the max. mark.

Why would you be starting it up every now and again? You like contaminating oil for no reason?

As for main dealers looking after your oil level for you, I won't even bother to comment except for RTFM and you should know better.

Is the oil pickup really on the RHS?

I guess that would make starting it up on side stand a bad idea?

my optimate aint connected yet and my alarm flattens my battery.

ive never had no trouble contaminating oil in the 16years ive been keeping bikes.

why does my oil light stay on when the bikes stood?I don't know, but I really really advise not running it 'til you find out and do something about it.

As long as the oil level is OK the pickup is well into the oil, starting on the sidestand isn't a problem, leaving it running while it's doing nothing is, sidestand or not.

just been out and started her again, few seconds and the oil light is still on, turn the ignition off and start again and the lights off? like i say oil change the weekend.

Keeping on starting up and switching it off when cold is not good for it in, if your not starting it up and taking it for a run it can get coked up.

I cant possibly see why you would need an oil change after 2k and 7 months though:confused:

Yip, just seems a bit strange to have a pickup on the side which will naturally (due to the bike being kicked over) will have less oil.

Well it's in the LHS of cases but the pickup is kinda off to the middle. Easier to explain if you are looking at a pair of cases but with enough oil in there it is not a problem.

Does the light go out if you rev it a little? Some bikes can have a weak pump on tickover, esp if tickover is a little low? Just top the oil up, after 2K miles the oil is hardly run in, never mind run out.

Honestly, this is a fallacy, there is no problem with the positioning of the oil pick up.

If there's enough oil in it, it will be fine, if there isn't enough oil in it, the pick up position isn't the problem, the owner is.

seems the problem has been found, it was a sticky set valve:rolleyes: dam this bikes more complicated than the ones I'm used to, the guys on the gixer forums take it off the bike completely.

Isn't that the EXUP type exhaust butterfly valve in the photo? How does this affect your oil pressure? Genuine question.

dunno guy on the gixer forums said the red light comes on together with Fi in the temperature gauge, said its a commom problem til you get rid of it all together.

The pic is that of the exup fluffle valve thing, check both cables to the actuator motor, if one is loose or come adrift you'll get the FI signal. When I had my gixer 1000 K6 and I changed the exhaust this happened (valve was part of the yoshi can and not in the collector like yours). I didn't get the oil warning though.

So it wasn't an oil light at all, it was the engine management light :-P
