Ok, im gonna give the zxr has a planned makeover, one day its gonna get a full strip and powdercoat, but in the meanwhile i want to give it a touch up. The frame/swingarm are grey at the mo but have scratches, so im gonna paint it matt black, i know the frame can get a little hot/warm, but would normal spray can stuff be ok, or will i need the high temperature stuff?
from what i gather YC is the matt black expert! any ideas/experience?

High temp stuff, I think. GMS of the pennine massive did his curvy frame....sure it were rattle cans, it looks pretty cool too.
YC only applies his paint with a stick as hes none too choosy ..hehehehe ;-)

ok, an update for anyone else who's thinking of painting their frame.
4 newspapers, 3 rolls of masking tape and 2 cans of paint and its done. I used plastikote super enamel paint, matt black. rubbed the original paint down with 800 grit, degreased etc then 4 coats of paint. Masking up took about 3 hours and was pretty boring, but i wanted to make sure it was all sealed up. I didnt think around the yokes would work due to everything in the way but it come out great.

Interesting, I have a black chassis... prefer lighter colours so wish it were silver.

If you were going for the full strip down and paint, would a normal 2 pac satin paint be OK for this?

If you're doing a full strip down then why not powder coat it?

Cos I aint got a power oven ;-) I just like to know what all the options are. it's more fun doing stuff yourself, so long as you can live with a few imperfactions.

imperfactions.
Ha ha. Was that an intentional typo.
PS I think the paint job looks pretty damn good. Nice one.

But now im not sure whether to put the hoover pipes back on, and if not, what to blank the holes in the tank with

No it's a ZXR750.
And it's looking good - well done that man!

:D I have a certain sympathy with that feeling, but as long as it's done understanding the limitations that such an enterprise necessarily involves I don't see a problem in doing it.

I'm still curious as to why?
:smt017 Seems sv_rory is not going to step up to this one... I could, but won't... because you lot demand to be dazzled.
Instead of re-asking an unanswered question, you could do a little research of your own so that you can make up your own mind as to whether it was done right. There is a ton of material covering surface preparation of aluminium in various standards and manufacturers data sheets. Probably none for that rattle pack.
Nice job for temporary cosmetics btw.

Looks nice mate. I'm still debating whether to bother re-spraying my 7R or leave it as is. The satin black frames do bring it up to date. My swing arm is scratched to hell where the last owner obviously couldn't use a padock stand properly.
PUT THE HOOVER TUBES ON!! I always wanted a bike with hoover tubes on as a kid, even the 400 (with the fake tubes ;-) )
(if you dont know what the hoover pipes are look at the before pic!)
They're not on it! I'd put them back, after all they're not there for cosmetics.
I'm still curious as to why?
I'd say probably in the same way a surgeon would cringe at someone's DIY appendectomy.
I think it looks good. What have you got planned for the fairing?
jimmy__riddle
23-03-09, 09:23 AM
i took them off while everything was stripped off, they dont really do much more than cosmetics, its not actually a ram air, they just pass through the tank and end above the top of the engine, a little extra cooling. it was when they switched to the L/M models (one intake on left) that they started using ram air.
i think i will put them on, distinctive zxr. now, i think i will paint them black as well
as for the fairing, i was thinking of something similar to the kawasaki moto gp bikes but more black. mostly black with a green stripe up the side and one over the top. but im not 100% on that yet.

oh, as to the painters opinions.
i know its not perfect, and wont last as long as a full on strip back and using 'correct' paints. but it cost 13 quid, which means even if i have to do it every year (only a few hours work) then it would take a long time for paying someone to do it to be cost effective.
as for the fairings, if its done right 'rattle' cans can provide as good a finish as paint from a paint gun, at the end of the day its the same paint. although it is harder to get the finish right with a can.
