The only thing to mention really is the straigh across the water to Portland from Weymouth gets pretty windy sometimes with crosswinds. Its worth it though nice views up on Portland Bill.

You come in to Dorchester on the A354 then go back to poole the way you are on about, you could do that both ways but you would be doubling back on yourself a bit.

I don't know how to use Google maps for that, just think they are some cracking roads and if you can work those into your routes then it would be ideal :D

Great roads those

C or D look the best, but rather than doubling back to Dorchester, why not go up From Bridport on the Road to Crewkerne which is fun especially the Tunnel coming out of Beaminster and then go through Yeovil to Sherborne and then onto Sturminster Newton and then out to Blandford and then pick up your orginal loop, Be alot more fun IMHO.

Just an idea ?

You have my route suggestion right

I'd suggest that you pick a route that you want to ride and then reccie it yourself and make sure you have your timings right etc and plan in a fuel stop etc etc. I know its extra faff but it'l make the rideout go alot smoother.

If you need suggestions for North Dorset/Somerset I can give you some, but I'll still show up to one of these if I'm free.

I have a route for the first weekend in May, I will post it soon when I have time to sit down and write it out....

J2UK if we can't hook up before this, I can email you a detailed route so you can check run it and offer any suggestions if you think they would help..

It will start just off Cadnam Roundabout and stop at the Worlds End pub, Almer on the A31 (DT11 9EW) and should keep us occupied for a few hours...

Watch this space..:smt026

Ok so here is a route (subject to change)

Start point.

Small lay-by on B3079, Roger Penny Way, just off Cadnam roundabout on offside. (1st exit if coming from Dorset, 3rd from Hampshire).

B3079 to B3078 (left hand fork towards Godshill) NB. cattle grids and wild horses and ponies in road.

Godshill into Fordingbridge to Cranborne

(over bridge, road turns sharp left, follow right fork into Shaftesbury Street and follow through Sandleheath and all the way to the T junction at the end of Steel Lane and turn right onto Browns Lane. Follow road to village of Cranborne back onto the B3078 in the direction of Knowlton.

Cranborne to Sixpenny Handley

On Cranborne Road (B3078) take 2nd right onto Parsonage Lane (B3081) and follow to T junction and turn right. Follow road to left and into a long straight* to roundabout, straight across to Six Penny Handley. *beware of speed monitoring by Police on nearside side road, hidden by row of trees.

Six Penny Handley to Zig Zag Hill.

Follow road through SPH, approximately 3km after leaving village, beware of harsh right hand bend and road surface.

Road takes you into Wiltshire boarder, then back into Dorset -

Road leads to Zig Zag hill, tight right hand bend with poor road surface and beware of vehicles cutting corners and on your side of road. Follow B3081 to T junction, turn right follow to end of road, turn left on A30 and then first exit on roundabout, A350.

Shaftesbury to Worlds End PH.

Follow A350 to Spetisbury turn right on B3075 heading for A31. At the A31 turn right and follow road for approximately 2km with Worlds End public house on nearside.

This could be used as half a route but is sufficient for a good ride. A31 can be used to hot foot it back to Hampshire if required after a bite to eat and a cold drink.

Thoughts?

I might have a variation towards the end of route, some smaller roads running parallel with the A350 on the eastern side... Need to check them out...

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=Unknown+road+to:Boyne%27s+Ln+to:Higher+Shaft esbury+Rd+to:50.779566,-2.132893&geocode=FaX7CQMd9wvf_w%3BFZ5cCQMdbffe_w%3BFVsICQMd yALf_w%3BFcVmCAMdbQ_f_w%3B&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=4&sz=14&via=1,2,3&sll=50.787544,-2.125082&sspn=0.022899,0.055275&ie=UTF8&ll=50.948045,-2.162933&spn=0.091279,0.2211&z=12

This is the variation in route, smaller and with less traffic. It is basically first exit on left after zigzag hill and at the end of the road turn left and follow all the way to the roundabout at the A350. Follow this road until you pass the roundabout with the A3082 (wimborne Road) and then take the first exit on the left and follow all the way to Spetisbury, cross the A350 and then head for the Worlds End Pub as before.

I have already been and checked out the route from after the A3082, its just the first part from Zigzag that needs a proofed.

The entire route is about 50 miles and will take about an 1hr 30.... is everyone happy with this distance and amount of time? (I am sure J2UK could add to it if people want more?)

The full route..

Just watch it on the ZigZag if you've not ridden it before exercise some caution, the bends are alot sharper than they look on the map.

The surface on it was alot better last time I rode it and once you got up over the top the road had been completely re-surfaced and was a lot better.

Yeah it is a bit loose, but the worst bit IMO is the bit frase mentioned,

Follow road through SPH, approximately 3km after leaving village, beware of harsh right hand bend and road surface.

I checked out the alternative route from zigzag hill to Blandford Forum (A350) and its a cracking road so I think we will use that instead of simply using the A350.

Lets cross our fingers for good weather on that first weekend in May! :p

I believe it's still running. This Sunday 3/5, but I'm not sure of a meet/start time.

I'm not 100% certain I'll make it - out Sat night, so will have to see how the head is Sun morning.

Due to the lack of response I had at the time I have made alternative plans so will not be running this on Sunday. Was planning to re organize this for a later date, in a month or 2.

Oh course it doesn't stop people riding the route as it's posted on here....

Not too bad then.... When I dislocated my shoulder at the beginning of the year I was in a sling for 3 weeks straight. Wasn't much fun.

Poole – Bridport via weymouth – Beaminster – Crewkerne - Yeovil - Sherbourne - Sturminster Newton - Blandford - Poole

Distance= 103 miles
Time= 3hrs
Breaks= Top of hill overlooking portland

There where a few shady bits of road, but nothing too major.

glad you had a good ride. I love that view out across Portland, if we could do the bikes photo shoot up on that road maybe stand in that layby you stopped in I reckon it'd make a good photo opportunity...
