I'd say that stuff will be fine - maybe budget for a back protector though

[edit] That bike you just linked is one of the ones I saw, I think it's in Harrow, so at least it'd be reasonably easy to get a train down for you to pick it up - providing they restrict it I suppose. Nice long ride back to get used to it as well :)

+1. I'm pretty sure that's where my mate is getting his brand new one from, and the guy threw in some useful extras for the commuter (extender, hugger and alarm)

hindle8907

whats an extender ?

Swin

Front mudguard extender, it adds to the original to make it longer and stop crud getting thrown up at the front of the engine

i think 3800 is just a little over budget because i still need locks/proper helmet /wouldnt beable to afford a can .....

Hindle - where will you be parking the bike? If outside, then I recommend getting a good ground anchor and an Almax series III or IV security chain to secure the bike. A 1.5 meter chain will happliy go round the front downpipe and through the front wheel of the SV an secure it to the ground anchor. A bit pricey, but then stolen bikes cost more to replace

hindle8907
20-05-09, 07:54 AM
its in a 5 car / car park / garage below the apartment block i live in ..... my other bike was stolen from down there Grrrrgggg was my own fauly tho for not locking it up ...... so yeah i will be getin ground x2 ground ancors and some nice big chains i have been looking at the alarmed disk locks as a tempery measure till i can afford an alarm fitting

i anit got leathers but i spent over 400 on hein gericke fabrics and 200 on my boots and gloves..... a few months back will i be ok with this kind of gear on the SV

That'll be fine mate. I say "leathers" as a generic terms for gear. A half decent lid can set you back a couple of hundered quid so bear that in mind. And if you plan to ride all year round some decent waterproof are a good idea unless of course all your fabric gear is Goretex. My old Hein Gericke jacket with their own Shelltex lining was fine for 3yrs of daily use tho but sometimes i find it easier to sling the waterproofs over the top of my fabric gear as it saves on drying time.

I'm assuming your HG jacket came with a back protector, if not make sure you get one of those too :)

hindle8907
20-05-09, 03:34 PM
yeah my HG gear is all waterproof and i have got a pullover as well i dont think it has a backprotector as far as i can rember my old LID i a motocross type so i will need a new one .

I carry a showerproof jacket rolled up into a pouch thing to carry with me if I'm wearing the Gericke jacket - for saving the drying time as you say!

Get a back protector then mate, after a lid i'd say its the mst vital bit of safety gear you can buy.

Expensive and rare! I know because I want silver lowers and I can never find any at a reasonable price :(

anyway I think that bike looks awesome - but its somewhat pricey for a 5 year old bike, regardless of its mileage. Oh and its a K3.

Hindle, there seem to be quite a few SVs in the for sale section of this site, at better prices than what you're posting. They are private sales but some are low mileage mint condition examples. You might have to travel but for the price difference, it would seem to be worth it.

i dont really want to travle to far to get a bike because it wont be resticted and i dont want to travle a long distance back on a bike im not used to.
i would just like to get used to the bike on local roads that i know

Too expensive, i wouldnt pay over £2000 for that bike. Ive seen k4's with similar mileage go for less.

Its a stupid price to pay for a bike of its age despite the milage.

The SV is a very forgiving bike for someones first big bike, it will let you make mistakes, and pull you out of them, but as with all bikes, sometimes it won't.

Just don't try and overtake a car pulling a caravan on a short stretch of road with a car coming the other way!!!! Unless you are really sure you can get past!!;)

I found that the restrictor works well with that until you hit about 65 where you have to get more momentum.

Yeah, theres some dual ones called 'dominators' but they are more for show and are nowhere near as bright. You can put headlights on from other bikes although it is a bit fiddly.
Bbadger on this forum has an aftermarket headlight, its worth a look.

"If the baffle is fitted the can is road legal"

It goes in the end of the can, a metal round peice - it makes the can quieter.

hindle8907
21-05-09, 07:13 PM
and without this in are you likely to get pulled or would it be ok ?

Magnum
21-05-09, 07:14 PM
Its unlikely unless you went ripping it past a police car at high revs, but its always a risk of a £30 fine. Personally its a risk i will be willing to take.

hindle8907
21-05-09, 07:20 PM
how easy is this to remove ?

Magnum
21-05-09, 07:21 PM
Its usually an allen key job, in which case you undo it and pull it out. It can be stiff but you can do it by hand. Its not a bad idea to keep the baffle under the seat just incase.

depends what kind of commuting if your hooning it up and down the motorway then the s with it's fairing would probably be better but if you do a lot of town work and scratching round the back roads then the naked's a awesome bike for it.

I think the faired versions are geared slightly higher too but as zsv650 says, if you have a mix of roads then a naked will be just right. To be honest, the SV isn't what I'd class as a "quick" bike - if I wanted quick I'd buy a gixer or zx, but it is a damn good ride and perfect for commuting

Thats not quite true either. Plenty of non road legal cans come with baffles, some you can remove some you cant.

If you want a proper legal one ther are plenty of good sounding ones out there. Dont believe any of the "expected" hp gains either, on an SV you aint really gonna notice them, just go for something you like the sound of.

Mine sounds very nice, deep bassy rumble on the overun, nice bark on medium throttle, sounds like a twin being revved hard when past about 8k!

I could take the baffles out, but to be honest I think it sounds fine as it is, and I don't really want angry neighbours telling tales to the council about the "evul byker renting your garage" so it's staying in!

I thought the 'S' had clip on handlebars which means you are leaning forward more (this could just be with the curvy model though??), that's the main reason I went for a naked SV as I couldn't be doing with leaning forward.......would rather have comfort over looks!

Also I think the naked version has 45 teeth on the rear sprocket and there is 44 on the faired.....which means the naked should accelerate quicker from standstill but the S has a higher top speed.

If I were you I would sit on a naked and a faired and see how you feel about the riding position.....I think a naked would be better if you are doing a lot of riding around town........mainly because of the more upright seating position.

Everyone says naked is rubbish for motorways.

Never had a problem on my Z750 which is naked.

Yes, the fairing makes it a little easier (its a faired SV I have) but not that much.

My advice - get a tankbag - works well at protecting your body from the wind on a naked bike.

I did my first motorway on the way back from collecting the bike, was very windy you feel it quite a bit, however when the weather conditions aren't like they were I'm sure you'd get away with it, however for regular commuting I'd say S for fairings..

any one know any good websites for helmets or places to go and whats the law on tinted visors ....
you can only ware them in the day ?

Magnum
21-05-09, 10:40 PM
Try helmets on in the shop, then buy on ebay for cheaper.
Tinted visors past a certain level of tint are illegal all the time, but most people can carry around a clear spare to show that they can change visors if the weather changes.

hindle8907

Thingus
21-05-09, 10:54 PM
Some people don't advise buying second hand helmets, even if it says they're new. You can't tell if they've been dropped or whatever.
I dunno websites in particular, there's plenty around though. Bargaining between two local bike shops is probably a good idea :p i'm sure they're 'feeling the pinch' just the same as everyone else.

yorkie_chris
21-05-09, 11:01 PM
Don't buy a lid until you've tried it on.

You can fairly safely ignore the tinted visor law, or if you get caught out it's not illegal to have no visor at all.

Swin
22-05-09, 06:01 AM
Caberg, Shoei and Shark do lids that have a lift-up front section(which is useful if you need to be ID'd to get into works carpark, like me) and some have a visor which can be slid down when you need it and retracts into the helmet shell when you don't - worth considering....

so on a naked bike i wont be able to go over 85mph really ? without geting blew about ?

Swin
22-05-09, 07:20 AM
You'll be able to do a *lot* more than 85 (on a private road hofficer) but you'd get some buffetting from the wind is all. Also the wind noise on your crash helmet (particularly if you don't have ear plugs in) can be a irritation too

Magnum
22-05-09, 08:03 AM
If i can surive doing 70mph on a crappy CG with NO fairing what so ever, with skinny tyres and a generally flimsy build, then im sure you can cope doing much higher speeds on a naked SV. On a restricted licence you will struggle to reach 100mph as it is, but a flyscreen will help.

I have managed to go faster than you will be able to on a naked SV on my naked Z750 and my head/arms/whatever are still attached, so dont be afraid on that count.

Re the bar-end mirrors, and anything else you think looks "kool"

Always consider the function of an item before the form, those mirrors may look cool, but the make the bars wider (making it harder to filter) and are pretty exposed - ie just dropping the bike at a stand-still could break them easily. Thats all before comparing how good they are to the stock item, rear-vision is essential.

Can't help you with the restriction, i was patient and waited ;)

But jeez that's a beautiful bike if i may use such a strong word :p goes against everything i am, it's pointy and naked... neither of which apply to my bike.

That Scorp~ stubby will be awesome though.

Congrats.
