I'm much the same as TimWilky, my official title is "IT Support Technician & Service Desk Controller," although they tend to keep me away from customers.

When something breaks, I end up being the guy that gets asked to help. If it's been a while since management see I've done anything that stands out, they throw threats around about sacking me for not pulling my weight. Then the next time everything goes t*ts up, they apologise again.

Still, it pays the bills. :)

My job title says, "Senior Support Specialist", here's some possible options:

a) First to get buried in concrete when the revolution comes

b) The person at the bottom of the management pyramid (that's two managers above me, three above them...) when the going gets brown and sticky

c) The person who has to dig like buggery when someone else's sh*t hits the fan

d) Specialist in supporting old gits

Its ok, but I still don't like IT and would still consider another career in a blink of an eye, IF I could work out what i'd really like to do.

Well I know, motor racing, but thats not gonna happen.

I'd like to rebuild houses I think too, but again, you need a lot of capital to make the first house purchase, of which I don't from owning a nice house of my own

Hence the other issue in a career change.......

Isn't that the problem.......

My job pays for my life, but the job isn't that enjoyable in itself

So in otherwords, you have to give up most of your life/posessions to start a new career.

And people say "oh its easy"

Yeah chuffin right it is!!!!! Not!

I had a job like that, only I liked doing the work, just not for that company. This was when I was working as a Java Developer. I told them to stick the job, and took 4 months off over the summer with my kids.

Now, work is OK, most of the time I'm getting paid for being bored - which is starting to get to me. Other than that, it's guaranteed money at the start of the month.

Job: Pre-Sales Technical Architect
Location: Work from Home

Basically the same as an architect for houses, but for computer networks.

Sales person finds customer who wants a new house, but doesn't know enough about building houses.
I speak to/advise the customer about what they want/need then design them a new house.
Then I take the finished plans for the new house back to the customer and try to flog the concept.
Then hopefully the customer likes the new house and contracts the company I work for to build it.

Im a sparky, but about a year moved from a company where we did incommers in to BT exchanges to a company who install control panels and all controls out in field in large office blocks in London.

Best move I ever made and this company is pretty much recession proof because of the software used within the panels. + all of our work is government / lottery funded.
