View Full Version : How do you care for your visor?

Because mine seems to be covered in light scratches and is generally getting a bit of a mess. I clean it wih soapy water after a ride to get the bugs off but what else should I be doing?
I use AutoGlym Fast Glass - spray some on and let it soak into the bugs, then spray a bit more and wipe with a mircofibre cloth.
If you "rub" the bugs off, you risk damaging the visor. Soaking and "wiping" is much better. Wash the cloth frequently - you could be dragging grit across the visor whilst you are cleaning it.

Washing Up Liquid? That stuff is quite abrasive, which is great for getting food off your dishes but not so good for your visor :D
I use 'Shift It' helmet and visor cleaner and a lint free cloth. Available from Hein Gericke.

Brilliant tip for removing flies. This goes for fairings, helmets etc.
Soak a tea cloth in water, place over infected area :) leave for about 10 minutes, then wipe to clean.
It does work trust me
Simples :)

For cleaning I just use a sponge with soapy water. I used to get scratches on the visor but it was mainly because I left it lying around on the floor, or forcing it in my topbox which never has enough room!
But to get rid of light scratches toothpaste can work.......if they are a little deeper then something like autsol (metal polish which is a bit abrasive) is also good :). For deeper ones there's not much you can do.....replacement visor?

Net'd sponge, cold water, doesn't scratch visor, wipe off water / left over flies with tissues or kitchen roll, then get another piece of kitchen roll and do the same again.
Scratches mean for a replacement visor, but I also have used AutoGlym Fast Glass as simesb said once or twice, but my method clears it fine :D

Just let the rain wash everything, bike, visor anything.

As with the tea towel a wet tissue will suffice while you are out and about, let it soak onto the flies before wiping
I keep a small chamois leather, very wet,in a plastic bag which I lay over the visor for a minute before wiping and then polish up with a lint free cloth.
No matter how careful you are visors tend to collect surface damage with general use and if I get 12-18 months out of one I consider that I have done well.

Unless my visor is really really cruddy, I simply rinse it with water as others have suggested, and wipe with a soft cloth.
Visors do have an anti-scratch surface applied, but its not perfect and once you get a deep enough mark, then this facilitates further scratches to occur.
If my visor is really dirty, then I use a very mild soapy solution. I dont have to clean my visor enough this way to really need to buy the more specialist cleaning products :)

Lawks- you should see the state of my visors!
Admittedly, my clear visor is unuseable now- one of the tabs that holds it on the helmet is broken.
But I think I was a bit keen with my visors in terms of taking them off and washing them with hot water and a (very small) touch of hand soap- there are stress cracks right across them.
Plus my dark visor is all scuffed up as it got a bit of a scrape cos of clumsy me. I can cope with it, but it's not ideal...

I just spit on it  (my wife cringes if she sees this) and wipe it
with a handkerchief. Been doing this for 6 years now. Of course, the
visor has a lot of scratches but I can still see through it.

yup I have a packet of pampers (not tesco cos im posh ;)) baby wipes under the seat, they are great especially when your out and about.stop wipe visor - give suit a quick wipe before flies become welded on, then front of bike - throw away - all this with usually just one baby wipe. They are basically just water and mild soap, so dont cause any damage and you dont have any old bits of dirt or grit like you can get with sponges or towels.I did buy a V sponge a while back and the first time i used it destroyed my visor and had to throw it away!! Dont know if I had a bad one or not, but ill be sticking to me pampers from now on :)

Spit on the bugs and dirt. Leave for a min. Then wipe off with toilet role. Sorted.

Mildly warm soapy water...soft cloth or piece of kitchen roll. Clean visor and helmet whenever it I have loads of flies and stuff on it... otherwise I'll just do it every week when I use the de-misty stuff on my visor... no scratches I can really notice thankfully.. epic the win.

V wipe.. wet wipe.. nice clean cloth .. done.
Already been mentioned but since buying my Arai i only use Shift It for my helmet and visor. I got the kit from HG it contains helmet and visor clean, foaming stuff for inside linings, anti fog and a couple of the microfibre cloths.

Washing Up Liquid? That stuff is quite abrasive, ....
Dunno what you use but Fairy Liquid has no abrasives in it ;)
Still using the same visors from previous lids, clear is over 5 years old now. Hot soapy water, use fingers rather than anything else (skin is less abrasive than most stuff), rinse in hot water and leave to dry. If out on the road I have that Autoglym stuff and a duster

Visor cleaner such as "shift it" and some microfibre cloths. I've got an Arai and the Shift It spray is the only thing they recommend, the Auto Glym stuff is supposedly not go for the plastic bits on the lid...
I've got an iridium visor and I'm a bit fussy about what I clean it with.
fairy liquid, sponge for teflon surfaces... i also use halfords own brand rain x stuff... i used to use microfiber cloths but i have noticed that they were leaving 'tiny' fibres stuck to the surface...
Pledge, the one with the wax in it. Clean visor everytime I go out on bike, using paper kitchen towels.
nearly forgot, also got one of these to stick in pocket for rideouts.
