View Full Version : Is your keyboard broken?

Do you accidentally put sixteen question or exclamation marks where one is the right amount?
Do you find it impossible to correctly type an ellipsis of a mere three dots and end up with nine or a dozen?
Maybe your keyboard is broken, or perhaps it's just that the repeat rate is set wrong, whatever, help is at hand:
This is a question mark: ?
This: ????????? doesn't mean it's a harder question.
This is an exclamation mark: !
This: !!!!!!!!!!!!!! doesn't mean a greater level of surprise or shock is merited.
This is an ellipsis: ...
This: ............. is meaningless.

Imitation - the sincerest form of flattery.
Anyway, we can disagree all we like, there's a right way and a wrong way to write and use the language, that fact isn't changed by your or my feelings on the subject.
What you choose to do with the electrons flowing from your computer is your business - I'd like to see the nation's abilities improved, (including our little bit of it right here in SV650.org-land), hence my, hopefully, humourous attempt to point the Org's thoughts in that direction.
Correct me if I'm wrong - I'm sure I am - but you seem resistant to this.

As a punctuation pedant I agree fully with what Sid Squid is trying to say.
I read the org because the standard of English is far better than that found on forums like Gixerjunkies - where they find it hard to string more than three words together to make a sentence, then can't spell two of those words correctly.
My written English isn't perfect, but I make an effort to ensure my posts are at least marginally readable by the most dimwitted of posters.
Please, can everyone just make an extra effort to use decent punctuation, it's the stuff we were taught in primary school and there's no excuse for not bothering now we're adults.

Let me think on that for a moment.
No, I don't think so.
Thank you for the spelling lesson, that you missed the attempt at humour there and in the original post tells me far more than the words you wrote. Similarly your barbed comments do nothing but weaken your position - why you want this I can't understand, but please do continue - whatever you wish to write as your retort will clearly be judged the last word as I shall not reply*.
Thus in some small way you will be the winner, congratulations.

I have a thought.
I decide that it is worthy of communication
I use language to express the thought
The precision of the expression of my thought is constrained by my ability to use the chosen language.
The expression of my thought is transmitted by me and received by you, the recipient.
The recipient interprets the language; the accuracy of the interpretation is further constrained by their ability to understand the language that I used
They think that they understood what they think that I tried to say.
Now why would I make that process more complex and less likely to succeed by deliberately misusing the chosen language?
Before anyone quotes any of my numerous misuses of language, I did say deliberately, and I can’t spell very well, my command of English is at best mediocre, also I sometimes choose to communicate in gibberish.
I hope that I have expressed my thought clearly in terms that you understood and you comprehend my meaning. If that is so you are now aware of my views and can use that awareness to deduce my likely opinions in relation to Sid Squids original post.
Interesting reading, but I would say that I only half agree with Sid.
Our language continually morphs over the years. Show modern written english to some one from say 200 years ago and they would struggle to understand it, probably going on to claim that it is poorly written. However, punctuation on the whole, will remain constant as it enables our ability to understand the written word in context and meaning. I would profer eats shoots and leaves as a good book to read on this subject.
But and this is were I disagree, punctuation can also be morphic. If the meaning of new punctuation is understood by the general populus and doesnt distract from the meaning of the original text then why shouldn't it become the correct way of doing things ????

I'm with Mr Squid here. What on Earth is wrong with just getting it right?
The thing that has most confused me in recent times is the use of multiple commas... for example, when people might say
"I had a great time last night,,,,,, better than last week"
or similar.
This also happens with other punctuation marks, which is equally confusing.

I must admit, i didnt sense it was written in a humourous way, i did think it was a rant... (3 dots as requested).
However, i do agree a little with mr sid in regards to the punctuation / language issue, being as im getting on a bit, i do have some trouble translating some of this new fangled speech.
So class, try harder!

Because it looks sh*t and simply serves to show the immaturity of the person who typed it.

And other times i'm just plain lazy and type words like 'probly' instead of 'probably' cos (see i just did it there instead of because) it makes no vital difference to the meaning of my sentance. Small adjustments like that dont get on my nerves as i agree about the point that the language is dynamic and alsways changing.
Also i'm not at school and dont expect those reading my posts to be judging me on the quality of my spelling/punctuation but rather the wieght of my comments.
Is that really such a bad thing?

But it becomes a problem when everyone reading a carelessly typed post takes 10 times longer to understand it than the amount of time saved by the poster being careless. :smt102
If I can't easily read it then it usually gets ignored. If the poster is a persistent offender then the 'ignore poster' button gets put into use. That may mean I'm ignoring some otherwise decent folk, but it's a trade-off I'm willing to make to stop me from stressing.

It DOES bother me though when our call centre staff at work use 'txt spk' to log faults / support requests etc - then i hit the f***ing roof because it makes us look like a bunch of retards to the customers!

Why immature? they just may not have such a good command of the English language or they may be even be dyslexic! (or are you in the "dyslexia doesn't exist" camp?) And - some may say that the use of swear words show a lack of command of the English language!
It's not evolution of language, it's plain and simple ignorance.
Language does evolve - hath thee noticed that thee does not use thee these days? ;) Also, I have just finished an OU diploma in Literature and things I thought would be unacceptable for an academic essay are now acceptable.

Now you know why I gave up on my frequent postings about the standard of the use of the English language in general usage on the Internet, Sid.
People are happy with making do, and good enough, instead of doing the job properly, all to save a few moments of their time.
Mind you, when 25% of kids leaving Primary School these day can't even read, I guess we are getting by, which seems to be the accepted level.
very patronising post SK, hope you fell better now
im glad you're fighting your corner for "good use" of the english language. but maybe, just maybe, it's not that important on a motorcycle forum? writing a letter, applying for a job i can see why you'd get overheated but for Cliff's sake, a motorcycle forum?

Dont agree with that at all. I write some very wordy stuff for work at times, to solicitors etc and i make sure they are well written, to the point that i'll email it to a colleague for his view/coreection/input. Thats important stuff right there.
When i come on here its time to chill and relax with like minded easy going people. I'm not on here to impress people with my gramatical prowess.
So i personaly dont "slip" into bad habits from here/work.
In fact at work i use the "auto correct" function in Word to fix my lazy typing. Words i type repeatedly i shorthand for typing and let the software do the work for me. So is that an example of me being lazy or slipping into bad habits...or somone using a tool of choice to make the workload a little easier?
Now somones gonna tell me i'm an idiot for using windows products such as Word too i guess

I don't think apologies are necessary. Write the way you want! If someone has a problem then they should keep it to themselves.

Do you accidentally put sixteen question or exclamation marks where one is the right amount?
Do you accidentally confuse 'amount' and 'number'?

Initialisms like HTH, IIRC, AFAIK are not standard English phrases but they are used frequently in an internet forum context.
CAPITALISATION does not mean shouting in a textbook, but it does on an internet forum.
Multiple exclamation marks are generally not seen in your typical novel but here they can convey varying degrees of shock or surprise.
Becoming a pedant on an internet forum really is a waste of time, language used in such an informal setting will never be used correctly by everyone.
Just be grateful we all use what can loosely be described as English, a language that is changing all the time, and has been doing so for the last 1500 years.
English is merely what the speaker and listener agree on as English. No rules are set in stone with most being merely guidelines created by observing generally accepted usage.
As a reader you adjust your expectations and interpretation of the text based on the source of the material.
A broadsheet reads very differently from a tabloid newspaper.
A 19th century novel reads very differently from a modern day comic book.
An academic paper reads differently to an internet forum.
etc, ad nauseum...
If you don't understand someone, ask them for a clarification. If you don't care ignore them and just get on with it.
Anyway, forums posts are more akin to natural speech than crafted prose and should not be subject to the same rigorous application of punctuation and grammar.
Do you always speak in a grammatically correct manner?

ratchet job - excellent post. I agree whole-heartedly. Those academic papers are bloody difficult to read sometimes, especially psychology ones!
Beware, the pedantic high horse has many hands, Grasshopper.
One tries to utilise a varied vocabulary and apply a modicum of exactitude in grammatical format, but even one must confess to the occasional multiple ellipsis .....................purely for effect you understand.
Satire - the sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own.
(Jonathan Swift)
Now STFU.

It's like having Stephen Fry on the .Org......pmsl:grin:
My my, what has this forum turned into?
I wasn’t aware that I had to spell check all my posts and correct all my grammar before I hit submit.
I agree that posts should be readable and a attempt at getting spelling correct is appreciated however if people are going to berate posts and users for NOT adding the correct punctuation to their posts, then quite frankly why are people surprised that members are drifting away from the org?
I will use punctuation and words to express how I feel or the emotion I am trying to convey in my posts. The fact that the OP was read by many as a rant and not as a "humours attempt" at bettering the org says quite clearly that the author failed to convey the correct emotion he was going for!
Language is forever changing and always will. It is part of society developing and evolving with the times.

I agree with this. It is quite different to many other languages that have an appointed body governing what is correct and what is not - which is a shame as Miss Ophic and I often argue over what is correct, and there is often no definitive answer.
"Catched" is apparently now considered correct English, which most people find abhorrent.

Not in my house it's not! Outputted annoys me too...
The one that really gets my goat at the moment is burglarized - what's wrong with burgled?

Lol I have pointed out that exact one in the past too. It expands to "burglarization", better known as "burgling" :D
"Utilized" is perfectly correct but means the same as "use"

bur·glar·ize vt
to enter a building intending to commit a felony, usually to steal something (often passive)
U.K. term burgle
so its not correct to use?
or totally awesome...
it's either awesome or it isn't.

it's an americanism. ipso facto wrong

very unique, fairly unique etc.
Unique means "one of a kind" so is an absolute and can't be applied with degrees.
