Pass The Butter, Please
This is interesting . . .
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings..
DO YOU KNOW.. the difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!
Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few
only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .
And now, for Margarine..
Very high in Trans fatty acids.
Triple risk of coronary heart disease ..
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold..
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact..... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..
This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).
You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to 'butter them up')!
Pretty sure they used to dye it pink as well to discourage people from eating it!

Wow, i knew marg was no good for me but i never knew it was just one molecule away from a plastic or any of those other things about it.
Will cockroaches eat it do you know? Them thing eat almost anything an everything so i wonder if even they know better.

serious?? free advice and all ....
Yeah read an article years ago that proved margerine was carcinogenic.
No buts, it's got to be butter!

Anothe question...does margering also cover the spreadable butters, like Olvio and Country Life Spreadable does anyone know????

Brain... hurts... from all... the pseudo-science...
I think someone needs to look up the difference between molecules and atoms.
I call bullsh!t
It's got a vast number of calories, so has nutritional value.
but yeah its bad for you. But you're hard pressed to find margarine these days - its mostly soft spreads, which are not the same thing at all.

Isn't Olivio, um, olive oil? So perfectly okay?

Can you elaborate on this a little bit? Are we stating that margarine is made up of oligomers, or is it lacking a functional group that would enable polymerisation? Is it missing some kind of cross-linking compound? Talking about molecules and plastics is a bit confusing, since plastics are made up of many differing molecular weight polymer strands (there are many experiments you can take to obtain the mean molecular weight and an overal gaussiun distrubution of molecular weights of the polymer strands) whereas a substance like a pharmecutical consists of one major compound (molecule)

Can't answer your questions Alpinestarhero......BUT......for the others, Olive oil spreads, sunflower spreads etc are NOT margarine and so are not as harmful. The original margarine was something that should not have been seen fit for human consumption and...any other animals for that matter.
Now.....the last part of the OP talks about leaving the margarine out for the flies and bugs. This is the most simple test you can do. A few years ago.....I put a tray in my garden and on it were tubs of butter, sunflower spread (flora) and olive oil spread (olivio). The butter was all but gone overnight. The olivio was half gone and had a load of flies and bugs on it and the Flora was almost untouched. The tray was off the floor to keep mammals away (they'll eat anything).
So....I be mostly using butter, I keep a little olive oil spread in the fridge as it's not that bad. I be mostly using lots of butter when I make mashed tatties and the like and I don't feel bad about it....I be mostly loving it and so does Stretchie!

It's just not a good test tho... there's no way i'm spreading dog poo on my toast, but the flies seem to love it!
I eat butter anyway. It tastes soooooooooooooooooooo much better, we have a butter dish n everything!. The flora buttery is a colse second.

Ah, but it's quality over quantity for me and my dogs poo is better than your dogs poo!
ANYHOOOOO, back on topic and derail over (sorry, got carried away)............eating butter does not greatly affect the bad cholesterol levels and so, I don't see any problem with eating it in moderation. I was just talking to my nan and she said that she thinks butter has a really bad health reputation because in the war, they used A LOT of lard and referred to it most often as butter because it made the kids still want to eat their dinner. Now....lard really will clog up the arteries and do you no good.
Another thing......I also tend to stay away from any foods that contain chemicals or man made colourings/flavourings/preservatives. If it's not naturally occuring, I tend to stay away because if the body can't process it, where does it go? Nowhere! I read a study once about cremation and the fact that in the body of a 70 year old man of average health, there was something like 3lbs of plasics/synthetics etc in his body. Built up over years of eating processed foods. Nasty stuff to think about!
I must find that article.
So glad this isnt going the way of the film "last tango in paris".....
Not seen that film. What do you mean?
*Goes off to search.*
i use butter mostly i do have a tub of bertolli in the fridge but i don't think its been opened yet i buy country life or anchor for sandwiches and mash potato and if i'm baking
