Well I changed the chain and sprockets over the weekend and got Helga through another MOT. Surprised me I tell you, not even any advisories.
But I digress, I thought the chain and sprockets change had resolved the clutch slip that I was getting, but no. On the way back from the MOT it came back. Slips only in first gear, and when it does there is a touch of whine to it. A loud-ish 'eeeeeeeeeh' noise, and then sometimes like my journey this morning it was fine.
So can anyone advise what could be causing the slip and whine and where I should be looking.

Is it properly adjusted at the clutch actuator Grinch?

Well I think so, as when I changed the chain and sprockets, I also took it off, greased it, lubed the cable and then re-adjusted it all. Either that or my adjustment made it worse.

might be worth removing the clutch cover and having a good look at the springs/plates. You'll need a new gasket handy for refitting though. If you tilt the bike to the left on its sidestand you should be able to do it without dropping the oil.

Might be worn plates, tired springs or even a loose spring fastener. Assuming its the clutch at fault.

I hope not, I only just swapped all that.

Yep, as I pull away. I know that these bikes can get a bit of clutch whine and slip, though this seems excessive to me.

what kind of oil are you using?

Once you're moving, do you get any clutch slip by loading the engine hard in 1st / 2nd / 3rd without touching the clutch lever, or is this only when pulling away?

Only ever pulling away, so far all the other gears have been fine.

I'm currently running Halfords oil, semi-sith.

If it's only when pulling away, never while traveling this suggests an issue with the clutch lever / cable / worm drive / pushrod side of the system, rather than it being a problem with the plates themselves or the clutch springs. Assuming the basket isn't notched, stopping the plates engaging cleanly. In short, once the clutch is fully engaged it's gripping fine. Something is stopping a smooth and progressive shift from the disengaged to engaged state and allowing the plates to slip for longer than requested.

Right, I'll have a fiddle with the setup of the worm drive then and make sure I have it all right. I remember when I put the basket in it was a touch notchy, but I didn't want to swap it into a 'smoother' basket until I was sure I fixed the gear selection problems. Might be a idea if fiddling with setup makes no difference to have ago at swapping it out again with one of the other 2 baskets I have.

I'd check the worm drive and push rod are moving smoothly and that the cable and lever are smooth to operate and return too. It doesn't sound like an adjustment problem as the clutch is engaging & disengaging properly.

If you've got 2 spare baskets and it doesn't turn out to be a clutch push rod caked in crud, fit the nicest basket & hub you've got, checking for any ridges. You'll want a new washer to bend over the clutch center nut too.

im glad you posted this up as i have the same problem as this mate only ever while pulling away ie lights roundabouts and you notice the clutch snap on when pulling away after the noise lol

the noise deff sounds as if its coming from the lhs on my bike so i think mine might be the worm drive needs a grease up.

let us know how you get on...

Well I know my worm drive is well greased as I did it Friday, though I might give the whole area a good clean at the weekend.

If the action feels smooth and slick, you're still getting the same issue, and you're happy with the work you've done on the worm drive, then it's sounding increasingly like the basket is notched and plates are snagging, then catching.

Feck, I hope not I seem to be endlessly taking that basket out.

Seems to be a common thing on higher mileage svs.BB juniors 90000 + miles bike would screech when taking up the drive from standstill especially if giving it some beans and we put it down to general wear in the clutch.

I was riding in this morning and it did it a few more times after not doing it at all on the ride home.2 last night. The clutch leaver felt awful so I will need to take a look at it.
