My goodness, i remember having one of those when I was younger, IIRC my handle was something boring like "little blue eyes" as you can see I was as imaginative with names as I am today ;)

(sorry dont know where to get one from though, although they must be around as truckers still use them day to day!)

funnily enough I wa into this many moons ago, but hen it was illegal and you had to get sets from the states (where my forum name originated from actually), but when they swapped it and made it legal, you really did get some idiots on there.

Sorry can't be much help, I know Tandy used to do legal ones, but they have been gonefor sometime now.

Cheers Mark.

Try boat equipment shops. You can get waterproof ones! They do get very expensive though.

Just do a google search. I looked into getting one a few months back when I was going to Wales for a few days offroading with some mates but it just got all to complicated. Talk of different aerials, ground links etc etc.

Get a 6" magmount, and a 6' whip ariel. Pick up folk from a good distance.Used to have it in the wagon, but after the work started sharing my truck out with 5 drivers, and the fact that it went over to Ireland a lot, by other drivers, I removed my gear from the unit. Still lying on my workshop shelf, including a 40 channel CB radio, and mounting brackets. Also an external speaker, and mounting bracket.Live in Hamilton m8. Don't think I'll ever use the gear again.

PM me if you're interested in taking the kit off my hands m8. Can drop it off to ya, and fit it into your Landie for ya too..

Once fitted - REMEMBER NOT to DRIVE INTO Hamilton car park approaching Quarry street from the post office side... my dad drove the van down to the train station car park once to go the bank, forgot the ariel was still up, and ripped out half the bank of scotland's phone wiring.:smt003:smt003:smt003 All he heard was a clatter because the ariel got pulled off the van roof. Oops.....

**** ALWAYS CHECK YOUR VEHICLE HEIGHT - ESPECIALLY AFTER FITTING A 6' CB ARIEL ****

Plus - the wife will not even notice the big tall ariel, and drive into East Kilbride shopping centre. Bye bye ariel, hello scratched roof....

wow!! they still going..?

i had one of them back in the day, in the 25 minutes they were popular, early 80's i believe.

My handle was "Floyd" after the mighty Pink Floyd. I had a Harrier CBX. Good grief i'm dragging this from the back of some long banished memory...!!

Try Tandy.

oh, hang on.

No idea. thats the level of my input....

Try Tandy.

Actually its Maplins now :)

I have a Midland one somewhere in my garage - you would probably want a new ariel, but if you want it I could be persuaded to part with it quite cheaply - Ģ20 should do the trick.

This of course is reliant on me finding it, and it still working.

Fancy that - people in small darkened rooms using an "alias" talking to people elsehere that they may never meet instead of talking to those around them.

I maen, what's the point??? They should get out more......

erm....um....arhm...

Actually I used to use mine in Aberdeen all the time - and I met a few people.

The advantage was that you had a limited range, so most of the people you spoke to were quite close.

Lots of people used to have "eyeball cards", basically business cards printed with something like "You have just Eyeballed Soulkiss", which were handed out at meets, and some people wanted to build as big a collection as possible.

So in a lot of ways MORE social than the intarwebs, but not as handy for using when at work :)

Nowadays you can still buy Midland units from Maplins. I believe you still need a licence but thats about it. Last time i even listened to one, it was full of people thinking its a free radio sation. You will need an ariel as well. Mag mount is the best. I had a KT40 back in the day 8ft of pure whippy hapiness

I spent years on CB's. I had Legal FM units and a couple of Illegal AM units with sideburners, HUGE whip ariels, 240 channels, up n down side bands chatting to people form all over the world...yes really. I chatted to a bloke in Brazil once. etc etc.

One four for a copy....oh yesh. Now wheres my Smokey and the Bandit and convoy movies?

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=99532

Edit:
It is now no longer necessary to hold a Wireless Telegraphy (WT) Act licence in order to operate Citizens’ Band Radio equipment, providing that the equipment is operated in accordance with the WT (Exemption) (Amendment) Regulations 2006.

Aaah, CB Radio. My dad had one with an external PA, great for scaring the sh!t out of old biddies and anyone who pulled out in front of you.

Anyone else used to do treasure hunts? One of my dad's mates used to hide on the edge of the woods, with a camouflage net over the top of the car - b'stard :D

It stopped being fun once it was legalised

My lad just got one for off-roading. He got a reconditioned one it off ebay and it was cheap. Nice thing about this one is it adjusts itself for SWR. I'll find out what he has.

Ive had in wagons before now, my handle was tomcat, got bored after a while though, only ever used for directions, try a truck stop. I had midland gear with a k40 ariel, a ''k whopper'' as we used to call em, all you need is a set and an ariel, you could use an amp, a burner to boost your signal, but all that ever did was block everyone else's signal iirc, must be some on ebay
like this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MIDLAND-ALAN-98-PLUS-ESP-80-CHAN-CB-RADIO-57-INC-VAT_W0QQitemZ310153626557QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Con sumerElectronics_SpecialistRadioEquipment_SM?hash= item483698c3bd&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I used to have an old AM international jumbo on a Dv27s on a biscute tin covered in tin foil...
then my dad gave permission for me to put up a 20 foot antena on the side of the house...
My handel back then was Jaws ( the Bond one) as I had a metal tooth.
God how old do I feel now?

I used to have a midland rig, till some b'stard pinched it out my car on the uni car park. Went on demos to get them made legal etc.

Never saw the point of it though when they said yes you can have CB but on the wrong band and with sod all power. I think that was just to placate the ham lot who thought of CB users as pirates.

Still these days I have a naughty Chineese 5w radio that I use with the autocom. Having had a mate come off in an mobile blackspot, we realised the advantage of being able to communicate in more that the mile you get with PMR

OK, cos I'm bored and it's to hot outside to be working on my garage (and next week it will probably be to wet!) I've done some research on that. Apparently you can get extra range on a CB by bouncing the signal off the atmospheric conditions, even to the point of reaching italy. How clever am I....:D

timwilky
06-08-09, 12:41 PM
yeah skip was all the background gobbledegook that made no sense unless you spoke Italian. DXing was the term used for bouncing the garbage back. I used to have a huge burner that obliterated everone.

BTW, round here it was 1-9 for a copy. Imagine talking to complete strangers. Now we just type to them instead. Well you would always know where plod was in CB land

1-9, 1-9 for a rig check..

Got a bear on your back door, good buddy, ease off the pedal

Ah memories, but us truckers never forget the language... still use it in trucks which still have them fitted. Very handy in quarries when you're lost trying to find the correct graded sand or gravel, and getting the attention of the big wheel (digger driver.....):p:p

To hell with the CB licence - they're not needed. Any time I've been stopped by VOSA or the cops, they haven't bothered to ask for the CB licence.

A mate of mine used to have a scanner in his wagon which could pick up the airplane and the old police frequencies.... When we were doing a convoy run to the same depot down south, he used to tell everybody on the CB where the coppers were hiding, so we eased off the gas as places where we knew the coppers would be hiding....... I believe they've changed over to digital frequencies now, to stop us naughty boys from being aware where they're lying in wait to do a VOSA stop check...

By the way, the CB market is still alive and well, go to any decent truckstop, and the choice of mikes, CB's, SWR meters, mounts, and ariels will make you very confused.

My magmount (6") and a 6' bullwhip ariel used to get people as far as 10 miles.... it still does coupled to an uprated Midland (upgraded the internals for better signal) CB radio...... Just going to waste now lying on my garage shelf..... Stay off channel 19 - full of wee ******s talking s***e, and treating it as a channel for playing rave music now....

to the op
right minimum requirements are
one radio, one power supply, one swr (a wee box for tuning) and a antenna (a areil can only recive signals not send****) after that you can buy lots of stuff to boost signal distance and clarity eg burners sidebands and masts (yes you can buy your own mast)

Just a bit! Passed my M1 licence then done the morse to get full M0.. (MM0 for up here) the year before they started giving them out in lucky bags! My wife done the mini licence a few years back M3 class.. lets you use all the big toys with 10w limit. Quite effective on a 20m monoband beam ;)
