Slow as fook, but what do you want for £200. Will get me to work/uni and back, and I won't care about having tyres etc. which will perform AND last. It means I can put cheng s**ts on the GPZ and some sticky rubber on the SV :smt084

Good evening all.

I've always likened them to a hand grenade looking for a war :D

They're ok if maintained correctly, but I have found that they aren't very durable in most areas, & have an annoying habit of wearing their camshafts out at relatively low mileages, along with the rear suspension linkage bushes, exhausts, steering bearings, cush drive rubbers, etc etc.
Good job Chris is good with the spanners innit!:D:D

Cheers.

P.S. Better join the AA:D

I had one - a wee red one the same. wish I still had it for commuting with. You couldn't sniff at a wee 500 which did 60mpg... And could sit all day cruising at 80mph.

The standard downpipes rot away, but I put on a secondhand set of S/S Nexxus 2:1 with a raspy can. Sounded good. Tyres last ages on them. Just look after the engine, regular oil changes, and Silkoline FST Pro down the carbs every winter time to prevent carb icing. They run forever.

Front suspension is a way too mushy as standard, but flush it out and put in heavier oil, and it's way better. Look after the rear shocky - ie keep it clean...

I had a GPZ500S many moons ago. It was matt black, held together with gaffa tape and fibreglass and had over 100,000 miles on it when I sold it to a mate. It kept going for another few years with him abusing it then he gave it away to someone because it would cost more than it was worth to buy new tyre, chain etc :D I went everywhere on that bike

Bah gum I think I've cracked it. Airbox boots weren't seated right which may explain the non existent performance.

The brakes not working is a cause for concern, but I don't have a suitable bit of braided line kicking about so it be reet.

yorkie_chris

Probably. bugger. Not many GPZs or ER5s breaking on ebay, I see a lot of phone calls in my future tomorrow.

Part number for stator is same. Part number for rotor is 21050-1171 (GPZ), 21050-1172 (ER5). So probably some minor change like 1 degree difference in the taper for the crank that is unnoticeable until you start it and it explodes.

Yeah they look close enough, worth a punt considering I can't find a GPZ flywheel. Will ring round breakers tomorrow.

There's that much swarf and crap in there I don't want to run it until I've flushed the oil and stuck a new filter on. God knows what havoc it's wreaked with the starter clutch, that bolt in with the wreckage is one of only 3 holding the sprag clutch to the flywheel.

yorkie_chris

No just made 3 wierd clicks which I thought were the fairing rattling, that was it just 3 clicks. Obviously the clicks were the alternators death. That was about 15 miles from home and it was fine then until we went to leave dizzys and it wouldn't start.

I had actually checked the charging voltage last night and they were fine.

Though it did feel to vibrate a fair bit, bearing in mind I've only ridden this bike 20 miles total.

Yeah they have a new rotor, more than the friggin bikes worth.

Lozzo
21-01-10, 10:49 AM
Chris - this is a common problem on the early GPZ500s. They are well known for spitting the magnets off the alternator rotor, which has been known to seize the motor and spit the pilot off. To be perfectly honest I'm surprised this one has lasted 18 years and hasn't destroyed the crank, cos that's what they usually do.

Hope you find a rotor, but I am sure the early models have one unique to that model only. I'm pretty sure a later one or ER-5 one won't fit.

yorkie_chris
21-01-10, 01:36 PM
what a ball ache.

Only thing that I can think they changed on ER5 just to be annoying must be how CDI picks up the signals. If stator is same as part numbers suggest.
