ZX6R is actually couple of mm lower, 335 vs 337, something like that. Not sure about -10R

10r is a bit longer than the curvy one a fair bit longer than the pointy one (still not long enough)

The ZX10R is about 2mm above curvy stock from memory without measuring it
stock curvy is 337mm, zx10 is 338mm, pointy is 330mm going by the table that someone posted

i measued both shocks from top to bottom bolt hole on both shocks in exact same place and standard was 2mm longer, battery box took some hacking and then some more hacking and a little bit more, battery now rests on top of reseviour and i will be looking to make up something that looks more professional to hold the batt along with a slightly smaller battery.

Hi all.
Looking at the list of available upgrades for a curvy rear shock below, the shock that would work best for me is either one of these, due to better spring rate and shock length.
04-07 ZX10R 338mm 540#
03-04 ZX6R(636) 340mm 540#
Are there any other shocks that are easily available that are at least as long as the curvy original that has a better spring rate? Been looking but ita a minefield for me who doesn`t know! Would the 96-99 GSXR750 345mm 375# be no good due to the spring?

It would be far too soft.
That said I'm wondering how accurate the spring rates in the spreadsheet are. I have a ZX10R and a ZXR1400 shock and the springs have the same wire gauge, number of turns and diameter, yet the spreadsheet suggests there is a significant difference in spring rate (465 vs 563).

Note that the spring rate of the ZX14 is pretty high, it won't suit most pointy riders unless they have pie retention issues like myself :D The ZX10R shock is virtualy identical though, just a little longer.
Have I mentioned how my hagon is superb on the road compared to the stocker?

Im about 195 pounds with kit. Is it too much for me?
195lbs = 89ish kg = 14 stone. I'd say that spring would still be too stiff for you.

I changed the ZZR1400 spring on my shock for a ZX10R one this weekend. After a long ride out over some fairly rough roads I decided that 540 lb was too high for regular road use. Lovely on smooth tarmac though. New spring is rated at 465 lb and is possibly a tiny bit too soft but I need to play with damping.
Found another pointy advantage over the curvy :D You can drop a remote reservoir shock straight out of the bottom of the swing arm after you remove the dog bones on the pointy, don't even have to remove the main linkage from the frame. On a curvy space is too tight to do this; I had to take the bottom bolts out of the the subframe, unbolt exhaust hanger and hinge the whole thing up and take the shock out from the top.
I've been reading up on what to get for a while and I think I've decided on a gsxr 1000 k3/k4 rear shock. I weigh about 85kilos so I know the kg/mm isnt perfect but it should be a good improvement over the stock. Could anybody give me the nod to say its a good idea or if theres a better choice??

Better choice is ALWAYS going to be a shock actually built/designed to go into the bike you are fitting it to.

I had to jack the bike up after shock change by 25mm as gixer shock is shorter

I didnt say stock - I said made for.
I re-sprung my stock shock which works for me.
Others bought Maxton/Ohlins made for an SV
Just because you can bodge it in doesn't mean its the right thing to do - if its taller or shorter than a stock one then the geometry is messed up.
I have a friend who borrowed a mates bike that had the shock swapped. Problem was that the bike was in New Zealand and the Shock came from the US, where a different bike was known by the same name.
So my mate ended up stuck in NZ with 2 broken wrists after he experienced a rather bad Tank-Slapper.
Not saying that its going to be THAT extreme fitting the "wrong" part (and many on here have done this and not been injured by it but its your call.
A good quality shock (Ohlins, Penske etc), custom build for your riding style, is going to be the best - but you pay alot of money for it.
In terms of bang for your buck, you can't beat the swap from another bike. So long as the spring rate is right, there's a decent range of adjustability and it's the right length then there's no reason that it would be anything other than an improvement on stock. In terms of length I'd be happy enough to go a bit longer with the shock but I wouldn't want to go shorter and then try and fix it with dogbones - you're messing with too many variables at that stage IMO.

Fitting a far higher quality shock from another bike is not bodging, it's just plain sense if you can't stretch to Ohlins etc. I'd suggest that repsringing the OEM shock is far more of a bodge and certainly half a job; the damper is barely capable of controlling the standard rate spring when new.
Well I've bought a gsxr 1000 k6 rear shock, got a months leave coming up so I'll fit it and report the difference.

Er yeah. Putting a bigger spring on stocker IMO is making things worse.
Anyone know the specs for Bandit 1200 shocks? Suitable for a Curvy SV?
It would open up another line of shock options but I believe the (mk1) Bandit 12 is 300mm eye to eye, so would be too short?

just changed the shock on Bullseye for a ZX10R unit-seems much better.
Thought i'd put up the part numbers you need for the Kawasaki nut and bolt for the bottom shock mount.

Hi guys,
Ive just read through this thread from start to finish. It definitely time for me to upgrade the shock on my K6.
I'm just under 16 stone without riding kit. I would like the replacement shock length to be as close to the original as poss as the height of my bike is about perfect right now.
Would the 05 06 zx6rr shock and spring be ok for me or a bit on the stiff side?
Any other options I should be looking at?

I just realised I bought a 04/05 zx10r shock not the n 06/07
so other than having to cut the battery box (which sucks) I think it's over sprung for me.
I'm 12stone without gear on so I'd imagine 14stone with gear on.... anyone else that weight with concrete evidence of using this shock on the road?
I've got heavier springs coming and emulators for the forks and want it all right...

Same here on my sv, I weigh 15.4 stone plus the other half on back most of the time. :( lol
So what's best at a reasonable cost. Front and rear.

The spreadsheet is great and I'm going to search the evilbay for something suitable for my 2002 SV650S Sk2
Does anyone have any info on things more recent than 2008? I have seen 2011 Zx10r shocks going for a reasonable price but I don't know if they are the same lengths/spring rates as the earlier ones. Happy to go off and do the research but I don't really know where to look!
Any idea how far off on length you can go? The original shock is 337mm long, I am guessing a few mm longer will lift the rear but how much? Happy to go a bit higher but I wouldn't want to go any lower.
