Jura is tesco, 70cl for £17.99 I think...
I think thats right, check before you trust me!!
Lol,
Wish I hadn't see that. The secretary at work bought me a bottle for helping her out with some building regs. Now I feel she was being cheap....lol.
Not really. It's a lovely drink.

Ardbeg, my second favourite Islay! Yummm! (fav is Coal Ila BTW if you ever feel you need to give me a gift!) We were once sold a bottle of a 21yo Ardbeg from the Rare Malts series of bottlings for the tastings we used to run in York. Ye gods that was a stunning malt! Worth a bally fortune now!
And on the subject of Islay, has anyone noticed how Lagavulin has shot up in price? :(

Recieved a bottle of 'Diggles Dram' in the work's Xmas raffle yesterday, which upon closer inspection appears to be a rebadged 16 year old, cask strength (57.7%) Bruichladdich.
Result? Oh, I think so!
Well, unless someone can come up with a damn good reason not to (in the next 30 seconds), I think I'll just pour myself a little glass of this rude boy to help see in the weekend.
Cheers folks!

Mate of mine from Newcastle parked his car outside my house when he went on holiday from Glasgow Airport and seemed to think that earned me a 1 litre bottle of 18 year old Glenlivet from Duty Free.
Nice chap, hope he goes again soon. :-)

Can anyone recommend which is the best?

This is Seumas' Bar in sunny (ha!) Sligachan, where Felicity and I went on holiday by accident this week. I suggest we go in mob handed, start at the left hand side of the top shelf and then work across and down. It might take some time...

Since I was introduced to Jura and Bowmore by KG & Ralph at GM3, I am rather partial to both of them, as well as Highland Park and Balvennie.
My boss bought me a nice bottle of 10yr old two wood Bushmills which is rather smooth

if this was to happen...would be nice for us guys to finally get up there, as we missed you all in May, Pete misses his mates lots, and he wants me to visit Skye
can I offer an idea....
I've been looking at the website......I wonder if the lodge would be big enough for a get together?
There are six bedrooms, a family room and bunk room on the ground floor and a further four bedrooms upstairs comprising of three twin bedrooms and one double.
Now, we can't afford hotel, Pete doesn't do tent, and if this wasn't too expensive between the lot of us, if we were to club together, it would certainly be a cosy homely place to go once the bar was shut. Being selfish it would also mean I wouldn't get left out having the kids with me, while you lot are trying to demolish the bars offerings ..........if of course they are welcome(they fit perfectly in a cupboard, make no noise, only when poked)
http://www.sligachan.co.uk/sligachan-lodge.php
orrrrrrr, perhaps the bunkhouse? maybe that would be cheaper still?
http://www.sligachan.co.uk/sligachan-bunkhouse.php
You can of course all tell me to bog orf :)

I do do tent but doing lodge/bunkhouse means all the time we'd spend pitching/packing up we could spend working our way through the Speysides. Capital idea!
I'm nae a real whisky drinker to be honest..but I'm still a Scottish SV'r at heart ;-))..and I found Isle of Jura is a lovely drop. Aye I do miss ya Scotland!! And I wish I'd spent more time on ma trusty SV n wi the club while I was there! Hope to make it back one day and finish the West Highland way..with a wee bottle to be sure!!

Having an idle browse of the 'Whisky Exchange' site this evening, whilst supping on a delightful little glass of Ardmore (such a nice, smooth and easy drinking whisky that), I stumbled across this:
http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-7624.aspx
Ok, so this is at the tip top end of the scale, but having spent much of my existence restricted by budget to single malts around the £25-£40 a bottle range, what are the differences that could one 'really' expect to find/taste/experience between say a nice, 16 ish year old bottle and a 55 year old exclusive one like this?
How much of it is clever marketing/branding?
Yours, ready to be educated,
Dumfries
PS - (If anyone spots the blatant "if anyone's got a bottle of something like this that they'd let me have a glug of" phishing in there, kindly do the decent thing and keep schtum! Thanks)
-Ralph-
17-09-11, 01:59 AM
Errmm, will it taste £14950 better? No!
£60 to £150 quid gets you the best whiskies out there IMO, any more than that is exclusivity.
Dicky Ticker
17-09-11, 11:20 AM
Like everything in life it is a matter of personal taste. I find 16 year old exclusive--to my wallet, but worth it. Other 12 year single malts vary enormously from distillery to distillery so it is down to your own taste as to which is your preference.
There is no such thing as a bad Scottish single malt:drink:

I've only got a couple of normalish bottles in just now, a Laphroaig and a nice Port Wood Finish Glenmorangie.
I'm quite partial to a smoky Bowmore or a smooth Arran too I must say.
Got to be Laphroaig.
And a couple of year's ago actually went to see them and collect my free dram in ground rent. This was from a great promotion they ran way back where if you sent them a bottle top back you got to "own" 1 square foot of Islay. Think they must of owed me some back rent cos I can't remember a lot about the rest of the day..

Scottish Quality
Glenbridge has been carefully matured in European Oak Sherry casks for at least 40 years in one of Scotland's premier distilleries.
Intense Flavour
Open the cap to find a beautiful mahogany liquid with the aroma of dark chocolate and dried figs. Then taste the elegance. Vibrant fruit flavours with a spicy aromatic oak nuttiness fade into a lingering sweet and mellow finish. Bliss.

Pittyvaich is/was, without a doubt, the best whisky I've ever tried. My friends and I get together every couple of months with a bottle each (minimum of 6). Bruicladdich X4 is the worst, but to be expected as it's raw spirit and what real whisky was before it was an enterprise.

Just after some advice..... As a leaving present for a male colleague who particularly likes Glenfiddich Blue Pete has come up trumps at really short notice and i`ve bought one of his beautiful Glenfiddich fountain pens. Ok chaps - looking for a nice bottle, round about the £30 mark (give or take a few quid either way), from here:
http://www.drambusters.com/
A few that I normally enjoy are Arran, Bowmore and Ardmore but I'm open to suggestions.
A couple that caught my eye (because of the age, as much as anything tbh) were Balbair 17 y/o (http://www.drambusters.com/whiskies?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=1517&category_id=132&keyword=balblair) and Benrinnes 14 y/o (http://www.drambusters.com/whiskies?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage-ask.tpl&product_id=992&category_id=120&keyword=benrinnes)
