For those amongst us, and there are a few, who appreciate the uisge beatha in its purest form.
Thought we could share our favourites, any unusual ones we'd encountered, or even just what we've got sitting in the cupboard.
I've put this in ecosse so i can keep it tidy and on track although technically should be in idle banter.
As per title, Whisky appreciation thread, not vodka, gin, beer or cider;)

To start the ball rolling:
Highland park in all its forms is my favourite. 25yo, is the best.
Aberlour 10yo, Dalwhinnie 15yo and Rosebank 12yo are right up there as well
Tonight however I am enjoying glenlivet 18yo port casked, lovely little tipple.
I'll empty the cupboard later and list them all and what i can remember about their tastes.

I've only got a couple of normalish bottles in just now, a Laphroaig and a nice Port Wood Finish Glenmorangie.
I'm quite partial to a smoky Bowmore or a smooth Arran too I must say.

Not at all keen on the standard Glengoyne, although the 17yr is lovely. currently working through a cask strength Laphroig. Kept safe right now is a bottle of Littlemill which is rather smooth.

Laphroaig is the one I drink most, but Lagavullin is even better.
I love pretty much anything from Islay except Ardbeg.

Well the Highland Park served at a recent society wedding is hard to beat but a bottle of Glenlivet 12yo would more than suffice if you're asking, I am a man of simple tastes.
Springbank 10yo is another favourite, although I had the misfortune of leaving my last bottle unattended in the vicinity of my father-in-law. I can only hope the greedy bugger enjoyed it as much as I would have.
The only malt in the house at the moment is half a dozen miniatures of Tomatin 12 y/o which I'm keeping for historical/sentimental reasons, The actual drinking whisky is Johnnie Walker Black label, with a half bottle of Blue hiding behind it for special occasions.

I am partial to my Islay malts, my local always makes sure there is a spare laphroig in the cellar. I like the cask strenth and it does have the amazing ability to send me to sleep mid sentance standing up.
Such difference though for such a small island between a Bowmore and Ardbeg. But both with their own characters.
Highland Park :- family tradition we put in on ice cream. my doddery old dad spilt some once onto his pudding. Enjoyed it and encouraged us all to try it. Now we do it to remember him

I'm a newbie when it comes to whiskey, but I've got a bottle of Balvenie in house at the moment which is going down very well.
Was round at a mate's house last week and was sampling some of his collection - Lagavulin is probably my favourite so far.
Also (bit controversial perhaps for a thread in the Ecosse section ) he had a bottle of Japanese single malt which was really nice, I just can't remember the name of it though...

Ardbeg is one of my favourites! The best I ever had was a 21yo Cask Strength from Cadenhead's Rare Malts selection. Partial to 25yo Macallan to, not that I can afford it very often!...
Oh so many excellent malts, almost all others are good but one or two poor ones I've had in my time. :smt041

The first time I tried Glenlivet 18yo was a revelation, almost like a fine cognac with that hit of smoke and peat that only a good malt can deliver!
I have not tried the 10yo Springbank as I worry it will disappoint. Tesco some years ago had their own 21yo bottling of Springbank that was silly cheap for what it was, so I filled me boots. My experience of Springbank is limited to this 21yo and wonder if the 10yo will suffer in my view because of that? No pub around here stocks much in the way of malt whiskies so I have no way to try before I buy.
i know its not a single malt but i cannie resist a drambuie and ice

I'm a newbie when it comes to whiskey, ...
Be careful, there could be a scottish reprimand on the way!:)
IIRC Scotch is always "Whisky". "Whiskey" is from somewhere else.
I'm an englishman but also partial to a dram of the dark spirit - have enjoyed Laphroig, Glenlivet and various finishes of Glenmorangie in the past, but most recently have been slowly working my way through a Macallan special reserve (actually I think it's a blend of same distillery single malts, so does it count? Very smooth though.) +1 to Highland Park supporters also - lesser known in the mainstream perhaps but I remember it was very palatable when I sampled some a long time ago.
Glenkinchie. Wonderful stuff, and a good tour, if I remember rightly....?

Lagavulin 16yo is a very nice tipple and smokey and peaty enough for me (the office calls it 'TCP', heathens the lot of them), tho Laphroaig cask strength is just inside the 'oh god it burns' barrier and is a nice change, followed up with Talisker and Oban as a joint third.
Not too partialed to the east coast malts at all however.
This thread needs a vote:
Is peaty whisky bad? (its a bit like Marmite - you either do, or you dont)

Talisker for me. When I did the tour they gave us a small sample of a special cask but at £300 a bottle it would be wasted on me
Come to think of it every time I have whisky I end up wasted
Another bit of controversy to throw into the equation
How do you drink it?
I like a couple of drops of water added to a single malt.
As for the run of the mill blended proprietry brands a ginger ale into a double as a long drink

As its quite expensive i only tend to drink it at the bells or when i go to dinner at a friends and they pop the malts on the table :drink:
So far I have tried:
Oban
Talisker
Dalwhinnie
Grouse
Jura
Glenfiddich
Auchentoshan
Glenmorangie
So far Dalwhinne and the Oban have been the best. Not too smokey and the they go down a treat

I took a rather nice bottle of 40 yo Strathisla to the AR this year.
Was pretty universally appreciated by those I shared it with :)
Bowmore 25 (if feeling super extravagant), bowmore 18 (if feeling flush) otherwise you can't go wrong with Balvennie
Kilted Ginger

Zig, is the bowmore 18 the mariner or the otherone (think it begins with an I) The new balvenie goldencask (finished in rum barrels) is beautiful, nicer than the 21 oak wood imho.

Aberlour
Jura
Jura Superstition
Tomintoul
Glenfiddich
Glenfiddich solera
Glenfiddich Oak Roast
Balvenie
Balvenie doublewood
Cardhu
Glenmorangie Rum Cask

Talisker for me.
A man of taste... Pretty much the only one I drink, there's better but anything I like more is a lot pricier. It's a good balance.
(and a wee guilty admission but I love Jamesons Irish, no it's not a single malt but it's close enough and it's lovely. Just don't mingle it with newcastle brown or it's possible the hangover will actually kill you)
party time Foey?:)
Mr DT, one does not parteey with single malt, one appreciates it, as you know there are numerous blends for the use of parteeying, Grouse, Bailie Nicol Jarvie (BNJ to its friends), Shyte (i kid you not) http://www.royalmilewhiskies.com/product.asp?pf_id=0010000008425, or even Tesco's own, however if you wish to call round i will gladly put a selection of single malts on the table for you enjoyment & appreciation. :D
Not much...
I am deeply hurt sir by your comment, it was not my fault but the fault of a foreign gentleman named Michael, although i do seem to remember a certain DT almost falling backwards through the Youth Hostel doors so it must of been a fairly good evening, although you were no slouch either if memory serves, just a shame KG couldn't have been with us too. :D
First and foremost Bruichladdich, various guises. Currently have a 15 yr old commerative bottle, not being opened.
Balvenie Double wood finish....... mmmmmmm
Knockandoo, Old Pultenie
I have a 21yr old Old Cask Balmenach, bought as a gift, so so so unfair. I want to open it, i can't open it, pleasure pain indecision but mostly just torment.
Bowmore I quite like too.
not a huge fan of the heavy peaty Skye and Islay "usual suspects" but can sufferthem gladly.
As and when new ones are tried and bought, I'll add to list.

Just been up to Galloway and picked up a bottle of Bladnoch 16 year old at the distillery, bottle of Bruichladdich Peated at the Spirit of Galloway shop in Castle Douglas.
Also went from famine to feast this weekend when I picked up a 16 year old Lagavulin and the bottle of 12 year old Glenlivet for taking some photos for a family friend.
To cap it all I wound up laughing again at Whisky Galore on BBC4 on Saturday night

No, but I have tried that - I found out it was this bottle of Hakushu: http://www.royalmilewhiskies.com/product.asp?pf_id=0010000019285 - really nice stuff!!
Also, I've just been up to Glencoe for the weekend and expanded my horizons a little - I think between us we probably tried around 40 different malts, some of them cask strength. We even made our own tasting notes in my mate's whisky book so we could remember what the hell we'd tried!
Couple of my favourites were:
Macallan 15yo - apparently quite rare now but absolutely stunning!
Bunnahabhain Cask Strength - can't remember how old this one was, nor how to pronounce it's name properly!

Old Pultenie, Knockanddoo,
I have a 21yr old Old Cask Balmenach
My wife used to work for Inver House distillers. She bought a lovely bottle of Balmenach one day that went down far too quickly, I loved it, when I tried to order more she asked for more at work then came home and told me it had been the last bottling run. I could have divorced her there and then for not telling me that when I got the first bottle! Oh, well, whisky is for drinking!
Drinking a 18yr old Knockando now, it's very nice. Wooden boxed bottle that I got in a supermarket in France for 20 quid (well was shopping with my 'rents-in-law and when my eyes popped out of their sockets they bought it for me), opened it the other weekend when Kilted Ginger was down to visit (I had been waiting for the right excuse) and I haven't left it alone since.
Also have a Ardbeg "Very Young" cask strength that I was given half a bottle of by a friend when he went travelling, I thought "very young" WTF is this? and I hadn't touched it in preference of other stuff in the cabinet, until KG said "let me try it", as you would expect of a cask strength "very young" it was awful as is, but with just the right amount of water, about 30/70 it is very nice.
Collection is a bit low at the moment as the usual Inver House suspects in my cabinet, Old Pultney 12yo, Balblair 16yo, Speyburn 10yo, and anCnoc 12yo, have all run dry need restocking but I do have a Glenlivet 15yo that KG gave me (needs a tiny drop of water, then it's beautiful), Glenfiddich 12yo, and a Bowmore "Surf" (litre bottles two for 40 odd quid duty free on the Dover-Calais ferry).
I also have decanter no. 508 of only 609 bottled, of Edradour cask strength, distilled in 1993 and bottled in 2007. A good friend bought it for me in 2007 and I'm going to produce it from my suitcase and open it on his 40th birthday in a couple of years time, it will surprise him 'cos he'll expect me to have finished it, never mind kept it sealed.
A wee tip, KG and I both bought Glenfiddich 12yo half bottles for about a tenner in Sainsbury's a couple of weeks ago, proper 350ml half bottle at considerably less than half the price of a full bottle.

I'm no expert, but I do like Bushmills Irish whiskey. I picked up a bottle of the 16 yr old the other day and it's lovely. Distinctingly non-smoky, though I do like many of the Scottish single malts also with their peaty-ness.

went to whisky tasting last night and had some superb ones at some really reasonable prices. Included a nice Vatted malt called "Monkey Shoulder" which was a bit of an eye opener. 10 yr Old Aberlour.
Will put details of the other ones on later
Some very nice drams listed here.
For an excellent whisky tasting experience I can reccomend the wee whisky shoppy in Inveraray, I think its called The Loch Fynne Whisky shop. The proprietor is a gem , he will quiz you about your favourites then offer taste sensations from anonymous sample bottles. I came away with an expensive non chill filtered Bruichladdich.
My normal fave is Highland Park, but will buy Aberlour when its on a deal in the Coop.
Another interesting outlet is the grocer/ whisky shop on the left hand side of the main drag in crieff near the bottom of the hill, they still get limited shop only runs from certain distilleries if you are looking for something a bit special.
Another big fave is Edradour, it must be the cutest distillery with the best visistor experience around , stop in the next time you are near Pitlochry.

I do partake on occasion, haven't liked all that I've tried, but have enough to give me some variety!!! I will take them neat ,with a little water to open them up nicely or on ice (the last option is my preferred way.....)
Ones I like:-
Glenmorangie (10 yr old)
Glenfiddich (Special Reserve)
Isle of Jura 10 and 18 (the 18 was superb)
Macallan 10 yr old
Laphroig
Glenlivet
Glenrothes - never heard of this 'til I tried it in LA of all places!!!
Ones I wasn't keen on:-
Bowmore - too much like TCP!!!
Ardbeg - shame, as I live on Ardbeg Road (worth trying as it could've been cool!!)

Now this may ruffle a few feathers, I have just tried a glass of English Whisky, should that be whiskey or even whiskie, who knows, anyhoo it was distilled in November 2006 & was bottled last weekend by the guy that bought it (actually he bought 12 bottles), i was quite surprised at how nice it was considering it is only three years old, quite mellow & fruity especially with a drop of water but obviously very pale, it has been aged in Bourbon barrels.
Now do i accept his kind offer of buying a bottle at what he paid for it, actually they are engraved decanters, each with it's own number & certificate, i think i will, then take a quick trip to the distillery to get a bottle for appreciation. :D

I was very pleasantly surprised by Penderyn (Welsh Whisky) which again was very young when first marketed. Penderyn give no age statement but it was on the shelves three years after the first distillation AFAIK. I'm waiting with bated breath to see if they bring out an older whisky.
As an aside, I thought you can only call it whisky if it has aged 3 years and a day in the barrel? Or is that Scotch Whisky only? :clown:

You make whisky not whiskey & nobody is stealing it, we are now producing our own which will leave more of yours for you, anyhow the art of distillisation was invented in Asia around 800BC to make perfume, the Chinese then started to use the process to make spirit from rice, this process was bought back to Europe by the Moors, it was then taken to Ireland by St Patrick in 432AD so i guess you stole it from the Irish anyway, besides we gave you trousers so stop ya moaning!

Oh nice choice! He has his uses then...
I emptied my bottle of Balvenie very recently - I may have to invest in another as it was really nice!

Yep, not the best one out there, although someone else may love it, each to their own. its very simple, no real aftertaste and generic.
re luckypants balvenie post earlier, if anyone is coming through duty free try to get your hands on a balvenie golden cask, you can only get it duty free or at the distillery. (if you like balvenie that is) its a 14yo that is as complex and full aof character as the 21yo but as smooth as the 12yo if a little sweeter..
Monkey shoulder tonight.,

Haha! Classic!
Shall we bring you 'round a big fry up and a bottle of Irn Bru for that hangover this morning?! x:smt114
Mmm sorry for intruding on this thread..
Had too many monkey shoulders, was on a deal.
Irn bru and a fry up would have been amazing.

Whether it's worth it is a matter of opinion and only you can decide that. However, I think it is very very nice and £58 isn't a bad price, you won't get it much cheaper on-line, by the time you've paid delivery on it, unless you find somewhere with free delivery or buy more than one bottle to split up the delivery cost.

Co-op FTW! I'll be down there as Macallan is my favourite tipple. The rumour on Glemorangie is true, loads in my local Tesco for £19 / litre I think. Happy Christmas all :)

Well Peg was in the car while I was in Asda last night, and I couldn't see Glenmorange at that price. However I was astounded by how cheap all the single malts were priced for xmas. The Glenmorange Nectar D'or had a much nicer tag than its original price(wouldn't know what it was like however) Now why can't they do a Highland park 18 yr old at bargain prices ;-)

I think all the supermarkets are pushing out some real bargains at the minute, Waitrose especially seem to be determined to make mine a happy Christmas, Jura £17, Jura Superstition £19, Old Pultney £19, Glayva £11, far too many to remember so i'd better walk down the road for another perusal. :D

Incredibly nice of you:smt080, but no chance. If its Grouse you drink then its grouse you'll get. I'll organise a run through in the new year, unless you or big H are going to the night out on Wednesday.
Scapa for £15 is a total bargain, it is £50 at Tyndrum.
Can you grt any more?
I got two bottles of my favorite whisky Bruichladdich!!!! :-D
