I now have a lovely 56 reg VFR 800 Vtec wotsit old mans bike in red.

with only 1300 miles on the clock. !

Pic's Dave?

Not my thing, I personally think the vtec kicks in just at the wrong spot, the 800 pre vtec was nice though and generally it's a good bike, engine will still be a little tight at that mileage, so should improve with use, hope you and Mandy get on with it.

Cheers Mark

cheers mark.. we are off on it tommorow down to southampton to see Matt SV and Anita - be agood 4 hour ride some motorway and some A roads to see how it is 2 up.

I must admit it didnt really thrill me on the 90 min ride home from collecting it today .. but it slowly grew on me..

write my feelings on it in a tic.

dooont say that pete- I thought that.

but serious I had a long think on the train on way to collect the viffer and when riding it back..

I think my love afair with the gixxer has to end.. I really am too old and not fit enough now to ride 2 up onit- its hard work. If i dont get on with the viffer too well then I will look for something else.. but will be a sports tourer.. This was too good a buy anyway not to invest in.

I think I have had some good time on the gixxer but its a lot more bike than I am a rider and although the viffer felt a bit boring and sat up like officer ponchorello in CHIPS it sort of suits me more even though I hate to admit it.. I didnt dab the brake once in to a corner on way home and it seemed quite fluid (for me) ... reminded me of being back on my SV ..

never really gelled with the gixxer - I just fancied being a power ranger biker for a while.. now I need wake up n smell the coffee and realise I older and the gixxer would have gone before next summer anyway I reckon.

Don't like to see anyone getting old before their time Quiff. You and Mandy looked so cool on the Gixer but you'll just be another boring couple on a Viffer.

Still, it's your pennies and if it means you get to ride out even more than you have already this year then that has to be a good thing I guess.

Good choice Quiff, it's easy on the old back the viffer, and you get to keep your liecense easier too

ok here you go..

on way home called in at Dans in Stone .. nice shop and ace bacon butties..

he has an 05 gixxer like mine in his window - was an odd feeling.. loking at both .. I know Iwill miss the yoshi and the roar and the revs and feeling like a "real" biker but every thing comes to an end eh.

another point to consider.. me on 6 points already .. both sp30 from speed cams when I was inme little corsa! not bike related but I did notice that no one looked today on the viffer. no envious eyes. no head turns.. but onthe gixxer nealry everyone looked. including the bobbies.

wanted silver really- colour growin on me.. but couldnt turn it down at the price - the guy not ridden it for 6 months .. and only 1300 on clock.

har luggage was a seller.. the trips we do the b and b's and camping.. and want to do ireland next year and scotland again and lots more- so easy now to take the panniers off. they in the conservatory being loaded up for trip to matts as I type.. and just click on.- better than the contraption and 20 cable ties I had to use for the soft panniers on the gixxer.

however, at moment sat here- .. the viffer does not light my fire.

will do.

it felt like a pair of old slippers today at first-

I thought what the hell have I done.. ?

riding position higher. more upright.. no screaming exhaust..

then i looked down and I was doing 102.. smooth as a smooth thing no stress and the engine hardly audible.. odd feeling.. and it still wanted to roll on..

then onsome A roads I opened it up and it sang a little , not like the gixxer but it felt more controlled - more stable..yea a wee bit more boring but didnt feel like it was gonna spit me off in to a hedge .. the gixxer I always felt edgy on . I am sure intime it will feel brill and be all things to me rather thana one trick pony ..

and of course, now I have to consider mand in all this too.. me thinks it will be a good 2 upper and I may on occassion be able to see some of the views she will be jabberin on about in my ear on the autocom. ..

sat on the gixxer in the drive a while back and immediatelty it felt like a stress position .. right wrist bent n strained and my bad ankle twinging after 2 mins.

I rode home 80 odd miles fromthe sellers house and was fresh as a fresh thing when I got off.

will missthe gixxer and the pose without a doubt..but maybe we had our run and its time for quiff to become shy and retiring and be almost seen and not heard.. what d'ya reckon.?

rictus01

well a head not heart choice, just have to see if the heart can catch up :smt102

I was in much the same poisition because of the knee, now enjoy the little S4 a lot, being able to ride is better than having the bike I really want and limiting when I can ride.

the one person any bike has to convince is you, image is far over rated, nice to play, but if it limits the riding it's a step to far IMHO.

Cheers Mark.

Looks really nice Quiff... I think you`ve made a good choice.

I can only say that from going 2 up on Mikes Viffer it is so comfortable and great fun. Boring? definitely not. I`ve ridden pillion on a gixer and didn`t feel safe due to the pillion position. I`m sure Mandy loved the gixer but when I looked at her I often wondered if she felt safe in that position herself. I`m sure she`s gonna love the VFR and it`s a lovely looking bike. Looks nice and practical with the luggage and I think it complements the bike nicely.

Hope you both enjoy it and have fun x

Quiff,No bike is all things to all men, like most things in life it is a compromise.
I am sure after a few tours you will not regret the change and not being noticed is a good thing in my books.Getting off at the end of a day without aches or pains speaks for itself
Like any new bike it takes a bit of time to adapt to the change but a nice choice of bike and just be careful your "Old slippers" don't suddenly decide that they are a pair of running spikes as it is so easy to wind a tourer on but because you are comfortable you forget just how quick you are going.
ENJOY

I had one of those as a loan bike for about a month when my CBR got knocked over in the works car park. I thought it was a great bike. Wasn't sure about the VTEC to start off with, as Rictus said, it was a bit intrusive if you weren't used to it. However, once you knew where it was going to chime in, you just rode around it.

It was a really surprising bike. It would keep up with sports bikes, but was all day comfy. I thought it even sounded good on standard cans once you got it all wound up.

It is a grower definitely.

Lovely bike. Classy fit and finish.

Now do the decent thing and sort out a set of Staintunes out for it. I bet you would never get bored playing tunes on the throttle. Sounds amazing just idling. Gives the bike way more character.

Seen plenty of well ridden viffers on the road. They can really go and keep on the gas. A heavier bike is not a bad thing on our crappy roads.

Hope you get on great with her, definitely get the exhausts changed for something more meaty, there's one down our local meet that just sounds amazing, think he's got scorpion cans on it

You'll never regret the hard panniers though, ever...

I quite like the colour TBH, those paniers are going to come in well handy for you on your trips. I reckon thats a corker, and its going to be better suited to what you use the bike for.

Get some cans on it and it'll howl, different to the GSXR, but howl all the same, Mikes VFR sounds really nice, no doubt yours will to once you've sorted it. You'll tweak it a bit no doubt and then it'll start to feel like your bike again. Everything new takes a little time to get used to.

Enjoy it mate

Hey Quiff mate,

Forget those doomsayers telling you it's an old mans bike, it's no slouch. A lot of those saying it's slow have either seen my tailpipes or I ain't ridden with them!

Forget the VFR site for fun, they really are boring!!! Useful for information though.

VTEC on your bike is the latest version and is very good, better than mine even and I don't have a problem with it. Use the VTEC zone for fun, ride it like your gixxer with revs showing, in the VTEC zone and you will love it. Sure you might not have the exhaust note, but that can be solved... For easy touring miles, keep the revs down and let the torque waft you on the way.... it's so easy to cover the miles on.

Like you said, brakes are awesome. Also the lights are awesome, it's mile munching ability is awesome, wind protection awesome, comfort not quite awesome but very good!

One thing about two up with panniers, make sure rear preload is up on max. The rear is a little soft and needs all the help it can get. You and Mand are quite a bit lighter than me and Claire, so it won't struggle. It's a fast bike two up, probably much better balanced two up than the Gixxer. I led NWR4 two up with Claire and was not holding up any riders on that.

Oh and I'm loving the colour! I wish I had gone for that instead of my silver bike! If you don't get on with it, then can I get first dibs on her?

There is no doubt that in the right hands the Viffer will shift and it's more real world bike than most Sports bikes, but we all know Quiff, he does have an image to uphold.

It wasn't that long ago that at least two people on this thread were thinking of changing to Dukes. Sometimes heart over head is good, sometimes not.

In addition to the VFR.... very different bikes that would be used for different purposes. The DRZ would have gone to help fund a Duke. It's not always heart or head, some of us are lucky enough to indulge both. But this time head reminded me that I will be moving house sometime soon and I may not have room for two bikes, it will be costly and all that good stuff. :(

Nah it can hustle a bit. Even with terrifyingly complicated brakes and more computing power than baphs loft.

However, a couple on a VFR with hard luggage and all matching leathers :smt046:smt046

And maybe dave numbers will be able to get past you on straights now without banging his head against wall for 10 miles lol.

I like the look of your 'old mans bike Quiff'. You just need a colour coded top box and it'll complete the slippers look:smt077

Joking aside, at the moment I seem to think all big bikes with fairings look like they are old mans bikes....I mean come on, my new partner has a ZZR1400 and I say it looks like the old mans barge:p But gosh is that thing quick and I fell asleep on it, it was that comfy:smt015:smt053 it was a long day was my excuse!
What I'm trying to say is, if the seat is as comfy as that, and huge, Mandy will love that back seat, which is the priority IMO, much better than that postage stamp you used to make her sit on:smt045

hopefully quiffy, i'll be joining you within a few months. Are you gonna get hard panniers? I'm gonna go for the full luggage, panniers and topbox

I might not get a V-tec one though

ALWIIGHT

You're going to have to get a baby grow like Mike's now
ha haa haaaa

Nice wheels mate. I'd prefer that (in black) to the Gixxer anyday.

Not having that loud can may be a blessing, especially WIV UrE NoVA BoI POINtS On URe LISENSE INNIT

You'll be the last one pulled for making a racket ;)

Oooh- nice. I'm jealous!

Question- is the luggage permanently attached, or can you remove it?

Luckypants

The panniers remove with one key. Really is so simple.

i dont .. I had them already !But you've got like how many pairs of gloves ? and you still made sure they were matching for the ride home ;)

much better than that postage stamp you used to make her sit on:smt045That's not very nice to describe Quiff's equipment like that [-X

Blimey! Have you seen how much can fit in those panniers?
but you still use a huge tank bag as well :???:

oops, i got excited and just wanted to post. then i read everyting properly :D Quiff, Niiiiccceeeeee VFR!

I'm going to get one. I am. A Brand Spanker. With the full luggage. Yes, I know the panniers are huge...but I dont always want panniers on, a topbox is better for filtering than panniers. And with panneirs and topbox on...me and maria can tour in complete comfort, no tankbags, no backpacks, and all the things we need with us...plus a few luxuries which may otherwise be left at home

A quiet heads up for the .org...1999 SV650s may be going on sale in a few months.

V-FOURce!

ok, he wasnt old then, but I bet if he were alive now, he'd want another go on a VFR750R.

The current VFR's may be a "soft" motorcycle, but lets not forget their heratige. My dad woke me up with his VFR400R this morning, what a glorious sound.

old mans bike my ****, much better bike for the road than a race focused gixxer, i personaly dont get the attraction of sportsbikes, a Viffer is more of a stealth fighter they dont attract unwanted attraction from pikeys/scalls or the rozzers yet are as fast as anyone needs given that probably over 90% of gixxer owners never use a quarter of there potential.
Good choice for you i recon quiff and im sure mand will enjoy it alot more aswell, VFR has been on my bike to replace the fazer with list for some time, set of cans and im sure you will grow to love it...

Nice one Dave :thumright: ....

I am sure that You & Mandy will love the VFR ...

It's so much more suited to all the long distance trips you do ...

When I was watching You struggling to get all your soft panniers .. tank bag , tent etc. safely on your Gixxer at Porlock last weekend I think I said to you at the time I thought it would be the last time that I would see you with that bike !!

I am really pleased that You have made the change & in a few weeks it WILL have grown on you and You will not look back !

I don't think some peeps on the forum realise the amount of miles that You & Mand cover each year supporting regional rideouts etc.

All the best Mate ... enjoy :riding:

OK the old man was a joke guys !!! SORRY

Kinda a personal comment as I knew a Viffer rider that said it was an old mans bike and I have a close mate who has one that says the same. SOrry my sense of humour is going back in the box xxxx

I personally like the VTec !! If that makes any difference :( hence my "nice bike" comment at the end

I do like the VFR's, and would love to have one (an 800) for touring (though I'd get a white one!) and one (a 400) for fun!

You enjoy it once you get used to it and you know it's better suited to your needs.

P.S. Gis a go mister!

You and Mandy looked so cool on the Gixer
This is true, all the matching kit and that! I do like the colour of your new Viffer though, and the kit will still match so at least you don't need to lose sleep over that ;-)

Hope you both enjoy!

I think the VFR suits you better than you think Quiff. You'll enjoy riding more now you have a bike that can cater for all your needs. I personally love the VFR in those colours, I keep trying to convince my dad to get one!

Nice bikes. I wasn't too sure when dad first got his, but having ridden it a bit it's a cracking bike. Finish and build quality makes my SV look like an old ****ter in comparison (which isn't too far from the truth).
Give it a few miles and I'm sure you'll love it.

We had a little visit from the Quiff's today they called in for a brew on their way home...

I think somebody has found his love of riding again, you both look so so much more comfortable, happy and relaxed to

must say mate it looks like you got a bargain there but tbh mate the silver one i had :) was very unenvolving to ride as you said earlier you look down and your doing over a ton but dont notice it ,i found it for want of a better term sadate ,dont get me wrong the speeds there if ya want it and i gets there quick enough, but it felt soulless tbh i akinned it to a faster goldwing .
it is great for mile munching and loading up which is your main concern with shed loads of room for mandy (my mrs wasnt that inamered with the pillon position possibly cos shes small)
i dont mean this reply to come across wrong/deflamitery, i hope you fall in love with the bike and am looking forward to hearing you take on it after a few runs

Ah only just seen this quifster.

Finally the old man got himself an old mans bike. How does Mandy feel about all this btw? You conned her into thinking she was going out with a young biker boy with a sports bike for ages but wont she now spot the old fellas bike out on the drive?

Only joking mate, you know that :) Looks like a top bit of kit you got there and next time i see ya, please let me have a go on it
