View Full Version : My Repaint Project

I thought I would share with everybody my latest project :D

I have had the SV now for about 18 months and unfortunately it has picked up some scratches in pretty much every panel and a little dent in the tank.

Since buying the bike I have fitted a cheap fiberglass replica undertray which took a lot of work to get to fit but is on there now. ( It is still in white gelcoat)

I have also fitted a rear hugger which was painted, very badly in my opinion, it had paint splits coming up all over it and the right had side has actually melted away against the side of my exhaust :(

Never mind, this is when I decided the other day that the bike can do with all of this sorting.

This is where the project starts.....

The following pictures are of the bike literally filthy dirty just after I got the hugger to fit.

The first part of the project is to rectify the panel damage before I can begin prepping.

The first part to get attacked by me was the rear hugger, this was in a very sorry state, not only did it have a poor paint job from the previous owner, the side had melted where it was pushing on my high level exhaust.

I rubbed the hugger down to get rid of all the paint splits through it. Once this was achieved, I cut a nice shape out of the side of the hugger where it was melting on the side of the exhaust so it can have some nice painted mesh bonded on the back, for looks and more importantly strength.

Pics to follow shortly...

Ah fair enough, I have a sprayer & paint available to me but I'm not keen on breathing the stuff tbh (yeah I know the risks).

If you click reply to post (when in advanced view) there's a button with a pic of two hills and a sun on it click that and insert your web address of the pic.

Just got the pm, cheers mate.

I always use an air fed mask, the one time i didnt I was painting an old cinquecento in fiat broom yellow, it was a solid colour. Every time i sneezed or coughed I was bringing up yellow paint, that went on for a good few days! never again.

Anyway heres the pictures of the rear hugger..

Now that the hugger was sorted, it is ready to do final prep ready for the painting process. This will be done after any bad panels are repaired.

The next panel that I have started working on, is the upper front nearside.

When the panel was removed it was evident that there was a slight crack under the paint. I then had to take the paint off to repair it.

Once the paint was removed it was very evident that there had been a repair made there before, and a very bad one in my honest opinion, I therefore had no choice other than to cut the section out of the fairing and plastic weld a new piece of abs in.

This inspired me to smooth the indicators out completly and do something trick with the mirrors.

These pictures are of my repair process on this panel.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint021.jpg

If you look closely under the indicator you can see a faint crack showing through.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint022.jpg

The above picture shows the paint removed around the damaged area. It was very evident how bad this repair really was! The filler that was pushed between the splits wasnt holding anything together.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint026.jpg

Even the back was a complete bodge! I then marked an area around the bad plastic ready to cut out.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint025.jpg

sv_rory
28-09-09, 10:47 PM
The next step was to cut the marked section out.http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint027.jpg

Once the piece was cut out a template was made out of cardboard to trace onto a new piece of ABS.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint039.jpg

After the card template was cut, it was then traced onto a piece of ABS and cut to fit my section.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint041.jpg

The template was then fitted into the panel to judge the curve needed in the repair section to fit my panel nicely.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint048.jpg

If you look at the repair piece closely you will see there is actually quite a steep curve. I managed to get this perfect. The repair section in this picture was only resting in place, I was holding it underneath.

sv_rory
28-09-09, 10:51 PM
Here is the picture of the repair section after it was formed to fit my section nicely with the correct curve.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint045.jpg

The piece was now fitting perfectly and was ready to be bonded in place using ABS plastic welding rods. Once the part was bonded in place, pins were sunk into the plastic to stitch the piece in and hold it so tight that i will not break out.

sv_rory
29-09-09, 09:44 AM
The next stage of the repair process was to stitch the back up and melt some pins into the plastic for reinforcement.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint096.jpg

Once the back was sticthed together and pins sunk into the plastic it was time to refinish the front.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint099.jpg

The front is now smoothed over with some stopper, the panel is now extremely strong and nice and smooth. Just got to prep the rest of the panel ready for paint before I move to the next panel.

I must admit it is handy having this trade under my belt saves me an absolute fortune however I still have to use a lot of time.

I will repair or paint anybody's fairings for them just drop me a pm :D

The project is moving on swiftly at the moment, the upper panel is finished ready for paint now and I have spent my time prepping the lower panels.

The lower panels were removed and when I looked closely they had been re-painted very badly indeed, there was evidence where somebody had tried to block lacquer runs out.

Not long now and these will be ready and I can plastic weld the other front indicator hole over and prep the panel.

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint104.jpg

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt112/sv_rory/SVRepaint101.jpg

In the above picture you can see that a small repair is required on the screw mount, it's not urgent but its best to repair it properly so that it is returned to it's former glory and sstrength.

After not doing anything on the bike the past few days due to work I decided this evening when I got in to get the lower ready for priming.

I've given up now for tnight as im just too tired. Hopefully this coming week all will be primed and guide coated ready for the top colour.

I am thinking of a black and gold paint scheme but am not 100% sure. Any ideas or suggestions? maybe inspiring pictures could help me.

Anyway heres some pictures of the lower panel ready for priming.

The repaint is coming along now very nicely, the panels are all prepped ready for promoting and painting :)

I will upload some pictures later of the panels all ready.

I have had the colour mixed up and it is a three stage process. I will have some of this paint left so if anybody wants a hugger or undertray or seat cowl for example painting give me a shout and I will do this cost price.

Colour is yc2 candy grand blue

I have finally made a massive progress on the bike panels.

All the parts were barcoated today using UPOL Barcoat.

I am amazed at how well they have turned out, especially where I smoothed the indicators overs, there are no pin holes or low spots in the filler whatsoever!

Result!

The panels are going to be primed tomorrow using 2k white primer. Hopefully this will be finished next week :D

Barcoat is a sealer, it is used when you want to spray over something that has an unsound surface where you may end up with solvent reaction.

like some of my panels were painted previously and several of them seemed to have been done by aerosol so to avoid problems later i used the barcoat.

This gives a perfect base for 2k paint.

White and Black.

Today has been productive, loads of progress has been made.

I started by wet flatting the panels to key up the barcoat that was applied yesterday. I was very lucky that there were no imperfections whatsoever on any panel.

The panels were then 2k primed then guide coated, again im lucky that the primer laid dead flat and once wetflatted it is amazing, super smooth like glass!

I have managed to wet flat 2 pieces ready for the colour. I got the seat cowl and the front nearside upper done.

Barcoat - a sealer?? surely you mean an isolater. Barcoat is alcohol based and doesn't adhere well to plastic. it would be used to isolate imperfections and probably used only if the substrate is of an unknown quantity and you wish to use something aggressive like celullose.

not dissing barcaot - but it wouldn't need flatten.

personally on my sv i abraided all the panels using 80, 2-3 coats of filler primer, flattened with 320, another coat of filler primer flattend with 500 then base coat, with 3 layer of paint, 2 coats of topcoat, then flatten and anothe 3 coats of topcoat followed by a damn good polish with the trade secret yog

I flatten it always so its smooth. Plastics if promoted and prepped correctly will not need to be filled 3-4 times with primer. The barcoat does need to be keyed up for primer if primer is not put directly on top after curing. I only gently take the edge off with 600 but very gently.

Also a good quality gun and technique allows you spray uniformly, you can do a base coat in one go, let it "flash" then lacquer over the top.

Plastics are fluffy if they are not prepped correctly and will show in the end result.

I take my time with jobs, and thats why I have never had a job returned to me in the years I have been doing this.

As I havent been on here in ages I thought I would show you all the finished result.

I am a sprayer by trade and spent way too much time doing everybody elses stuff bar my own.

I spent a saturday a few months back now and painted it one evening. As soon as photo bucket stops playing up I'll get the pics on here :)

I chose to go chrylser pearl blue, over a course silver base, the results will be up shortly :)

after primer I've always dusted black over and cut it back to the primer with 1200, that way all your imperfections and hairline scratches show up black and easily spotted....... maximum quality finish :D

yeah dusting black over the primer is known as a guide coat and is primarily used to show, high/low spots in primer.

Anyway heres some pics as promised, for some reason I can't get onto photobucket so heres a few I have got elsewhere.

Paintwork looks very good, photography's shocking!;)

More seriously, a few logos added (transfers/laquer?) and a right good clean of the rest of the bike will complete it and should make it look very impressive indeed.

If I ever get the funds to give my own bikes the paint they deserve, I could be in touch.

I am going to get some suzuki stickers added to the tank again because it's a bit plain for me then I'll re clear the tank.

I specialise in bike painting, my friend has opened a new motorcycle repair/ service workshop in Milton keynes, I do all bike paint stuff in there from frames to complete jobs, I got my bike done quick when I moved in to almost help advertise.
