View Full Version : R/C plane and helicopter people
just from reading the forum i've noticed a few people on here seem to be into flying r/c planes and helicopters. my new found redundancy has seen me get more into it again. my brother and my dad have been flying for a while, but i've been going to indoor flying with them recently and got hooked again.
so i got my first 'proper' plane in years this week and hopefully off to fly this weekend! very excited. oh and got a wot 4 from someone in the club selling up (got it for £50 including servo's nicad and switch! bargain!)
so who else is into flying and what you got?

damn dan you got skills! i know it can be expensive, especially practising the stuff you do, theres not exactly much room for error! did you practise all your 3d stuff in a flight sim first or just through a bit of trial and error (and dare i say expensive write offs?!)
wideboy- whats your brothers name i'll prob have heard of him? my dad and bro go to quite a lot of shows and one of the guys in our club is runs IAD Designs, selling big yaks, caps sukhois etc.... his latest toy is a 1/2 or 1/3 scale decathlon, its going to have a 250cc petrol engine with its own onboard starter! v cool! its got a 15ft wing span!
my brothers had a few yaks, in fact i think he may even have had 2 extreme flight yaks, both binned! :(:(

Thanks malks, no I only got a sim recently. Been flying less than a year too (started in Jan). At the end of the day peoples learning curves are all different, I have got quite far as I have flown literally everyday since starting it in Jan and I have thrown a lot of money at it. It's a tough hobby at times, and a slight error can cost upto £400 when you get to the big nitro helis.
If you want to get into heli's start small though. I would get one of these little beauties, it's what I started with and flew for about 6 months. Still so much fun!

Those are good fun too. When you want a bit more of a challenge get the Buzzfly SE single rotor. 100 times harder but so much more fun too.
it was rainy today, so didnt get to go flying. hopefully tomorrow will be better!
ive never really been into flying heli's, they are very impressive to watch them being flown properly, but most people i know only doing hovering about and stuff. ive only ever flown the wee pico z thingys in my front room!
i really want to get flying and pass my bronze (dunno what your qualifications are down south!) then get flying on my own. really want to get a 50/100cc size yak/cap type plane!

A is to fly solo. b is to fly a public displays and e for examiners. i have a e  yeah babey i is playa init
well today there was a bit of a breeze, but it was dry, so we headed to fly. things went well, the plane flies well. everything went well, just used the 'buddy box' set up for me flyign about. then after i had done enough flying about i let my bro fly about for a bit and to land it. he proceded to run it out of fuel and then take the tail wheel off and stick it up a tree on landing. luckily just some burst covering and the tail wheels been replaced. so we're ready to go.
i can happily fly round and round in circuits, so think next time im up i'll give some take offs a go! hopefully wont be too long till im flying on my own.
Wideboy
15-11-09, 07:36 PM
takeoffs are easy, its just getting used to using the rudder to control whilst taxing for takeoff, most trainers tend to lift by themselfs after throttling up and then you away!, what trainer are you using?
i also went for a fly but it was way to windy :smt022 so stood around for a few hours and went home, my mate shagged the bearings in his motor so he didnt have a good day
i'm learning on a wot4, i know the taking off bit is fairly easy, we even have a tarmac runway at our field, so can always have a nice smooth take off!
i'm just quite excited about doing something different for a while, plus i actually enjoying putting them together and building them and repairing and stuff. but i think its actually cos i now spend more time with my dad and bro as its something to have in common!

I won't bother with those licence thingies. I fly in a public field and I have insurance, not into clubs all that much as I want to fly when I want to, not when I am 'allowed' to.
I went out yesterday and did two tanks on my Trex 600 nitro. Was awesome, great weather allthough I did land it in a very deep puddle which then got sprayed up all over the place. Free cleaning! :D
I have recently got into flying with inspiration from DanAbnormal and Wideboy.
Have spent more time crashing than flying but its part of the fun. Flying an old century hummingbird. Hopefully will graduate into flying the century gl450se.
Will need to stop crashing before that happens..the glue gun is my friend!

Looks good..I have to stop crashing first ;) I went out and bought the gl450se as I didnt know what I was looking for and was seduced by the blingy bits.. I've not flown it yet and it just sits looking pretty in the box for now.

running a tornado thumper c2226 on phoenix 10a ESC on spectrum
they are both the same price but the piaget is slightly bigger, the gent has been discontinued (i think) and were really well rated so i thought i go for that as it was the last one in the shop
been watching these since October when the season kicked off and from what i've seen they are really robust and can take a real good smash :D

Yeah I had one of them, it kinda evolved from another set of plans that came with one of the mags. That was a bit of box drainpipe with a .40 on the front and a bit of ally tube stuck out the back and some dead easy foam wings.

I also have a Tmaxx Monster truck Nitro.. but as great as it is, and it really is fab, running it is so damned expensive as I constantly crash it.
well another night of indoor flying passed without any real incidents for me! i came home from a night of flying to not have to repair anything! which i think is a first! but i have to say the flying wings indoor planes are brilliant, very strong and take a lot of abuse!
i'm starting to try and prop hang the thing, but i just dont have the hand/eye co-ordination to figure out what sticks to move when its hovering! might have to set the flight sim up on the pc again and get practising!

well just back from a fun day at the flying field today, now i've been flying a bit of indoor stuff recently but as for proper outdoor stuff i've not really flown properly in about 10years. but just before xmas i bought me a wot4. now ive flown it 5 times on the 'buddy box' but today after the first flight the guy who was in control said i can actually fly and said i should land it but next time i'll be flying on my own transmitter. so flight 2 today was my first time completely in control i took off and landed all safely, then one of the guys from the club who does the examining came over and started telling me to do some manouvers. so turns out today i've passed my bronze award and can now fly on my own un-supervised!
i'm well happy as it wasnt expected and ive not taken off or landed properly since i was about 14! so all good, now to steal my big bro's petrol planes and have a go with that!

Awards? Yewhat?
it's all to do with insurances and stuff, if your a member of a club you should have insurnace so if u injured a member of the public your not going to get a massive lawsuit against u personally. plus club rules mean u can't fly on ur own with out a bronze award. but if u just buy ur own stuff and go down the park then just make sure u don't crash into anyone!
Wideboy
31-01-10, 12:14 PM
congrats mate!! its a good feeling aint it :thumright:
works slightly different in england, you have A,B and e in fixed wing (plane) of rotary wing (heli). A - means you can fly solo again for insurance purposes, B - means you can fly at shows, displays and able to teach and E - means your an examiner so you can do what ever the feck you like  and take people for there tests......... i got ma B :) but I've never flown at a show
insurance is a must have, i've witnessed a tutor 40 pile through the roof of someone's listed house :smt038, it was funny but we didn't laugh at the blokes face, insurance sorted it all and there was no price hike in the premium.... i'm covered to 250k because one of the sites we use is off a full size aerodrome encase someone hits a real plane :-s
was going to take the heli out the forest today but its fffffreezing so think some much needed maintenance on the car instead

Oh right, our club never bothered with that, we just tried to avoid crashing into people cars and eyes and stuff.
Seems to be taking things rather seriously for what is just a bit of a lark.
yeah it is quite serious, but its just the way the club is run. we have our own field just outside of a decent sized town, with a fitted out container and stuff to sit in if its cold, plus a big grass area plus a tarmac runway. as wideboy says its just to cover your ass if the worst was to happen, we always have members of the public and stuff coming to watch at the field and i wouldnt want to have to fork out if i injured someone!
i think under the scottish system its bronze for flying solo, silver for flying at displays and gold if your a show off! my bro took a LMA test to allow him to fly at displays, not exactly sure what that one was.
Wideboy

My local flying field is right next to the Motocross track. We're not allowed to fly fixed wing when there's a bike meet on which has upset quite a few on the committee. You can imagine how popular I was at the AGM when they found out I've got a scrambler...!

its a problem, at one of teh clubs i fly at they have banned petrol, gas turbine's and jets as they say its to much of a fire hazzard as we fly over crops........ yet full size fly there with high octane fuel, we fly electrics were the lipo's are prone to exploding on impact, nitro is more flammable than petrol (i think) AND!! one of the other clubs near Winchester is a square patch of grass in the middle of a field full of crops yet there you can fly anything
there's to much politics in it, even the forestry commission sit out in the new forest photographing you to see if you slip up and fly over a path...... its fecking stupid as we fly off a old ww2 airstrip
