Got an Ariston Microcombi 23 MFFI combination boiler. It's just stopped working. Making a loud ticking noise and the heating has just gone off and the hot water doesn't work? Any ideas???

Thanks guys.

Can you remove the cover, to check if the fan is running?

Chris.

I can see how to get it off. Can I do this safely with the boiler turned on?

Bit more info. Pump sounds like it is running. I've turned the heating off so the ticking has stopped. It sounds like some sort of valve ticking sort of like the click from an electric cigarette lighter but in rapid succession. When I turn the hot tap on, the boiler doesn't "fire up", but the ticking starts again.

To be safe turn off the elec power going to it. Once the case is off and you can see the fan, turn on the power and run the hot tap to see if the fan spins (as its the first part of the ignition cycle). Make sure you don't damage any seals when removing the cover, just be gental.

thermistors??( not sure if your boiler has these), flow sensor?

Yep! Fan is working. Doesn't spin very fast though. Is it meant to???

One more thing. It's also got enough pressure. It's at 1.5 bar cold.

On the fan there are two rubber hoses that come of and lead to pressure switch, if you can see which one is positive '+' normally on the casting of the fan alot of the time its red, then pull it off the fan and blow down it, make sure the boiler is on and the hot tap is runing if it lights then its the pressure switch.

I'm gonna have another go tomorrow. Getting too late now. I think I'll just go to bed wearing all the clothes I own.

Thanks for the help up to now mate....and welcome to the forum.

Now worries mate, when you have a look tomorrow see if you can see the burner and have a look to see if the burner is sparking. Have you checked the gas, by turning on the cooker or something else gas powerd?

The burner is not lighting up. The boiler (CH and hot water) are the only things gas powered in my house. Everything else is electric.

Is the burner trying to light, is it sparking?

Can you hear where the clicking you heard before is coming from, now the cover is off?

Funny ****er. ;)

I think I'll still get someone out to look at it. It hasn't been serviced for a while anyway. I need a radiator moving as well so they can do that as well.

Ours did this (although not the same make) turned out it was the ignition pack, so electronic mumbo jumbo.

Then the thermistor went. Our boiler has an LED which displays a fault code, which boiler repair man can ring up the manufacturer to find out what the fault is. But we had 3 guys turn up, as the fault was intermittent

No 3 turned out to be 'Boiler repair man' of the year, and solved the problem, that the other 2 couldn't diagnose.

Don't know if your boiler has a fault display Scoobs?

Cheers for the info maviczap. I'll bear that in mind when the guy turns up. It doesn't have a fault display.
