If you want linux/windows then just install windows first and then install linux, it'll do it for you, if you want windows/windows its trickier. As beabert says, what are you trying to do?

See, told you I needed an Idiot's Guide !!
I want to be able to run XP Pro (current OS) but also have the option to run Windows 98.
In case you think this is bizarre, the reason is that I have a little project to do as a favour for someone that involves writing a piece of music & my software (Cubase 3.7) runs best with W98.
Before anyone suggests updating the software to a more recent version - this isn't an option at this time I just can't justify the expense !!
It's not exactly thrilling reading but this might be worth looking at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306559

Of the top of my head i would create two partitions. Installing xp last, then use software like easy bcd to create a boot menu, or manually edit the boot.ini.
personally, I would just 'obtain' a version of cubase for use in xp it if was me, or use a trial. PM me and ill see what i can do.

Why don't you get a newer version of Cubase? 3.7 is ollllld school!

3.7 maybe 'old school' as you put it - but it's what I have & what I've been working with for the past 15 years; I know how to get the best from it & I like it !!
I'm sure I would love Cubase 5 but at the best of part of £500 I can't justify it.

Seriously I wouldn't bother. I'd run Windows 98 in a VM.
Otherwise you need to wipe XP, repartion, install Win98 and reinstall XP.

This is the best guide I've ever seen - very comprehensive. If you take to time to read it you'll understand the issues and will have no problems. http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/
As he explains Windows98 has some peculiarities.
Installing a virtual machine is another idea but you'll need a PC with some horsepower - if its a recent machine it should be ok if you have a gigabyte or more of memory. One snag with 98 on a virtual machine is that you'll probably be limited to a low screen resolution (640x480 I think) as 98 doesnt support virtual machine extensions. At least thats true with VMware. Virtualbox might be better, but I havn't tried that.

A virtual machine, like VMWare, allows your computer to pretend its another one and run two operating systems at the same time.
It's not a great idea for music though, as it will be higher latency for inputs, which can be a pain for direct recording and midi.

If you do want to go down the dual boot route, setup two partitions, one primary active, and either an extended or another primary, doesn't matter.
Load Windows 98 on the primary, then from Windows 98 stick in your XP CD and run setup from within 98. Reject the prompts to upgrade and tell it you want to do a new installation, selecting the second partition as the target. I'm pretty sure that if you do this from Windows 98, it will edit the boot.ini file for you. If it doesn't, open your boot.ini in notepad from the Windows 98 once XP is installed, and cut and paste it into as post here, we will edit it for you.
