View Full Version : Somone tried to kill me today
So I go for a bit of a bimble this afternoon, looked a lot warmer than it was.
Nearly home and I reach a red light with a long line of cars and slowly filter to the front.
The first car at the lights, a fiesta driven by a middle aged lady with one of them stupid bluetooth things on her head, isn't too happy that I am sat alongside her and is determined I am not going to get in front.
She looks over at me and before the light is even green light floors it to try and beat me off the lights. Now I probably reacted wrongly by staying alongside her and going about the same speed but there is traffic about 10 yards ahead and I know as soon as we hit this I will just filter past her. After the lights is a narrow one way street which goes off to the right.
So I am still alongside her and I know I should have just backed off but I was annoyed at how petty this lady was, trying to get in front of me when it was obvious as soon as we hit the next line of traffic I will get past her ayway.
So we carry on side by side for about 20 yards and then she swerves at me, causing me to slam on the brakes and nearly hit the kerb. I regain composure and by this thime she has (as expected hit the tail of the queue of traffic and I smugly filter past)
I mean I know I wasn't completely in the right but she could have killed me and if I had mounted the kerb probably a pedestrian.
In hindsight I should have stopped and had a word with her but I would have probably done something I regretted.
Anyway, just needed to get that rant out of the way. I'll be more careful when filtering from now on.

Yes she was petty, but as you say you knew that as soon as she/you hit the next line of traffic you will filter past anyways....was it worth being persistant that you wanted to be in front?

i had a similar experience in august excpet the only option was to hit a traffic light, i chose the car.... came off damage free but with a bruise, he had a massive 6" dent and scratch in his door, person wouldn't stop even tho i boxed him in and chased him 3 times to get him to............ police threw out all charges even tho i had a witness willing to go to court and threatened to prosecute me for criminal damage as the offender said i kicked his door in..... which i did and i can honestly say it was 100% worth it :smt037
Playing silly buggers in a car or on a bike just isn't worth it.
I do alot of miles on the road and have seen some ****, there is alot of crazy stressed out people out the that won't think twice about driving into you then kicking the **** out of you or worse. I've seen it first hand.
I listen to relaxing music and let people get on with it nowdays.
why didnt you give it a bit more and go ahead of her lol .
a fiesta driven by a middle aged lady
:thumleft: "Ride it like you stole it"
If I had have given it more speed, I would have probably been out of options when she decided to go for me. Plus there were loads of pedestrians about and I didn't want to go that fast as it wasnt a safe road to do so.
But yes I admit, I entered a traffic light burnout with a middle aged lady in a Fiesta and lost.
I hang my head in shame :(

I always listen to music on longer rides now cos I get bored. I tend to listen to slightly more aggressive stuff to aid with filteing :smt067
I turn it down in town, and at motorway speeds you can't hear much anyway, so no problem there.
WRT the OP, some people are just idiots, best avoid them. I used to react to them, but now I just let them get on with it - like you said, they will be stuck in the jam LONG after you have gone. Respect for not giving her car a good kick- it's bloody tempting I know!

I myself have had a anger management problem while driving, when i used to drive more to work i would just lose my f**king mind.
I really had to take a look at myself and readjust my mind while behind the wheel before i done something id regret.
Still get flashes now, but vastly improved.
Saying that this morning, split ar5e behind me in a 4x4 too impatient to wait behind me while i was letting somebody reverse off their drive, so she went round me without knowing what was infront then gave me a dirty look and sped off.
I caught up with her 30 seconds later in traffic but she wouldnt look in her rear view mirror so i could give her some abuse.
Funnily enough i dont get any rage while riding because i just know how vulnerable i am and concentrating on some richard who cant drive is not good.
What, on the bike?
Never ever, I don't think it's safe.
I rather like what my wife was told on her bike safe course.
When someone cuts you up, bahaves like an idiot, or generally acts a fool; just chill and think - well one of fellow bikers will be along soon to hack you off in turn. I always smile now as I filter, thinking of all the stuck four-wheelers that are cursing me.
Something else, my wife has taught me about bike riding (she only started riding a bike two years ago, while I learned thirty years ago) is to use my horn alot more - to make other road users that you are there, of course :)

Lesson learned there fella. You could have at least said it was an XR2 or summit;) You know next time either to let them go or properly nail it and GTF out of there. The only time I am not aggressive away from the lights is if I am in the centre of the lane. Filtering to the front and I'm gone, the further away I can get from the bastids the better.
Remember yer not on a wheezy IL4-600:-dd, you got PUNCH!

Horrible that.
Why city cycling/commuting on a pedal bike IMO is more dangerous than any moto. "Know your place...an inch oot from the kerb!"

Just open the throttle, whether a car wants you to get in front at the lights or not is not even worth consideration.
If they do anything really daft then back off, be patient, then either pull alongside and see how they feel face to face, or rake your toesliders down the side of their car. With practice you can gouge every panel on one side of the car down to the metal.

You need to learn to launch, no way any car short of silly quick stuff is going to be anywhere near me off the line and that's *not* speeding.
The SV is a piece of p*ss to launch pretty quick[1] too, get it moving with a wiff of throttle and a tadge of clutch, drop the revs slightly to match road speed, let out the clutch and accelerate hard.
Druid
[1] Very quick involves 9k, lots of clutch slip, hanging over the front end and still waving the front wheel in the air, not a good idea on a regular basis unless you have a free clutch plates supply and a number of get out of jail free cards.

I had some bloke do this with me in a BMW - at the time I was on a YZF-R125. Filtered to the front of a queue at traffic light crossing on a dual carriageway. I set off and he floored the thing (well probably not as it was a BMW) to keep up with me.
Me trying to prove a point stayed at the side of him in the middle of the two lanes all the way to the next set of traffic lights where I filtered to the middle of the front of his car so he couldn't move or get past me if he wanted to.
He then proceeded to say I was in the wrong. Knob

Whether the driver is simply ****ed off or just "having a laugh" they have the potential to do you serious harm so you have to watch out for the little tale tales like giving you a dirty look and gunning the engine.
At the end of the day I think I would rather play it safe and filter past them in 200 yards or so when their stuck than try to go 1 on 1 with a car because you do get some crazy ****ers our there.
I learned not to get anywhere near morons like that long ago. Its not worth it and hopefully karma will wrap them around a tree with the loss of a limb down the line.
Stop in front of her.
Light up the rear wheel
Covered her in used rubber, just to be extra dirty. Give the bird, ride off.

It is also pretty funny when they take off in a cloud of rev limiter and burnt clutch... and you set off sat bolt upright at the same speed as the rest of the traffic and shrug your shoulders/shake head.
Whats a middle aged woman driving a crappy little fiesta gonna know anything about biking or what it feels like to come off?
Just think to yourself how much they'll have done you over if they turn out to be some psycho in a stolen vehicle, take you out - wheelchair for life! Nup, let these morons go. They ain't going anywhere really, and they know that. Bitter that they are in a 4 wheeled lug of crapola, so they take it out how they can.
Or maybe she just found out her husband was cheating on her, and was a middle aged woman in a fiesta full of rage ready to take out anything in her way!
So we carry on side by side for about 20 yards and then she swerves at me, causing me to slam on the brakes and nearly hit the kerb. I regain composure and by this thime she has (as expected hit the tail of the queue of traffic and I smugly filter past)

No I was on the righ of her but it was a narrow one lane one way street.
Right this has gone on far enough! I know perfectly well how to get a motorbike to go from 0-whatever quicker than some old slaaag in a 1.25 fiesta!!
Please see the below image for reference. Sorry it's not cropped properly but I am using MSpaint.
We are sat at traffic lights at point 1. This is a very busy street in the middle of the town in which I live, it's 4 o'clock, those 5 cars parked above point 2 are parked outside a school. The school has not long started kicking out and there are pedestrians, most of them posh teenage girls, everywhere.
The lights aren't even green yet but the fiesta woman has started to go. She is already half way to point 2 when I set off.
We reach the corner of point 2 at the same time and I am looking to go through the narrow gap but as I start to get beside her she swervs towards me. I have 2 choices, accelerate up to 60 to get past her, something I really don't want to do seeing as there are pedestrians everywhere and also I am going to have to brake soon for the back of the queue to the next set of lights. Or let her get through the narrow gap first and overtake her later.
I chose the second option as I felt it was the safest all round.
I hope this is a lot clearer for you lot now, now can you please just leave me alone :smt016

It's not always safe to let the idiot go first and follow on behind them, unless you have turned and got the attention of the drivers behind, and made them question what you are doing and what you are going to do next.
The other traffic in the queue behind expects a bike who has just filtered to the front go get away sharpish and be gone by the time they have to move. Once people see the traffic moving in their peripheral vision, lots of people have clutch up and accelerator down, before they have actually looked where they are going. You leave yourself mixed up amongst traffic who seconds earlier weren't really expecting you to still be there, and some dozy tit may just run into the back of you.
The weight of a car, and the laws of inertia, stop anything short of a seriously powerful car, getting away as quick as you. Launch off and leave them standing, getting yourself away into the safety of the clear road ahead.
generally i dont have problems with middle aged women in fiestas but she is taking road rage to the next level so i would prob have given her what for or at least banged on the window, s*it her up a bit, silly moo!!
or you could be extreme, i once spoke to a bloke who picked up his bike, must have been 125 or something and threw it through his gf windscreen, he was a big geeza so he looked capable.
Hang on. You decided to do that around Eastgate? Are you a lunatic? That bit of road is a nightmare. It's quite steep downhill too.

Which is exactly what I would have done...
A few years ago I'd have been fuming and banged on her windows or tried to remove her mirrors, got myself completely wound up and then rode like a tw*t for the rest of my journey.
Not anymore, just shake my head now and try and not loose my temper. Its not worth arguing with an idiot in a car. Especially when you can wait a few seconds for a gap to open up where you can use the power of the bike to nip past them.

Nice to see it's not just Sheffield where the elderly & driver capability impared live
An old couple (yes, grey tops, pipe & slippers jobby) jumped the lights & then drifted between their lane & mine on the way to work today.
I slowed right down as this was on a sweeping bend and my spidey sense was tingling.
The tool in the car following them in 'their' lane, who from the looks of things thought I was being a wuss hanging back, (grey tops in both lanes at this point) got a fright as they slammed the anchors on while deliberating which lane to drive in (only x2).=D>
Must agree, hang back as cars piloted by fools seem to come off best in most collisions.

It is not a big deal to slip in behind with these sorts of drivers and remain clear of the traffic behind.
Agree with the clutch up, throttle down comment. I got hit from behind in torrential rain a lot of years ago - there's a jolt, I had nearly forgotten that one. Didn't go down but it was a hard hit and enough to launch me across the intersection. Lights turned green, release brake, throttle and clutch, cough, splutter, bang! I had moved about a foot and a 4WD launched straight into the back of me.
Oooh and another from Redditch! My daughters boyfriend lives there so I'm over there quite a bit!
