View Full Version : Is this new?
I got stopped on my way to buy road tax in my daughters car a few weeks ago and got a £60. Yesterday I get a letter from DVLA fining me £46. My daughter also got a letter saying she had to declare she is keeper of vehicle or face £1000 fine. So Im now skint £125 for tax and £106 in fines. Learnt my lesson

How late taxing it were you?
tax had run out when she bought it and we sorned it. she bought car in August but was not 17 until jan. I was driving it coz mine was in being repaired.
Car is not allowed on the road without road tax unless driving to a pre-booked MOT. I don't understand the DVLA threat - who is the registered keeper just now, the previous owner?

No you have never been allowed to drive without tax, dunno about the fine but the DVLA are a bunch of front bottoms, they sent my mate a very threatening letter for "not taxing" his GPZ, despite it passing under the control of an insurance company as it was written off.
Fair enough mistakes happen but the tone of the letters would get their noses bitten off if they spoke like that in person. And I'd laugh.
Oww Hazel that's rubbish news :(
As said, it's not new. Once it's sorned you can only buy tax by phone, internet or walking to a post office. It's just a booked MOT you can drive to or back home from if failed.
I don't understand the 2 different fines though :???:
The Policeman that was a completes **** not letting you off to carry on to the Post Office though I can completely believe :(

yeah coz the cop will never had heard "I'm on my way to the post office now" might have gotten away with it if only a few days out but not months. Could hav been worse, could have done for no insurance either.

The DVLA fine may well be the amount due for the months it was not taxed

I suspect the £60 was a fixed penalty notice for driving a car without valid VED (Road Tax)
The £46 from the DVLA is likely to be the cost of the tax you would have paid between the date it was last taxed and the date of the offence
Regarding the registered keeper, if it's her car and she keeps it at her house she should be the RK, if it stays at your house but she uses it there's merit in you being the RK, if she lives at your house and the car is kept there she definitely should be the RK - bearing in mind the RK is not the same as the owner. Best bet would be to phone the DVLA and ask what's most suitable for your circumstances...
It's a PITA, but it's the law, and ignorance provides no defence
Treat it as an expensive lesson and get on with life:cool:

Depends if you're telling the truth or not. :)
No tax does not invalidate insurance unlike no MOT.
How's the train ride home? Home you had good w/e :)

Wasn't sure about that and comment was made from train. just checked my insurance doc and in the small print.
Insurance is invalid if car does not have a valid mot and road tax, driver does not have valid licence etc etc
May not be the same for all insurance but thats what mine says.
Train was fine, on time etc so no complaints. Great weekend. Cheers folks.
KK, owner reg keeper has some consequences, ie i own my dads car but he is the registered keeper, means i cant drive it under my insurance (if you're fully comp you can drive other cars not owned by you 3rd party) Have to be named on his policy.
Surprised you didn't smile and charm you're way out of it, must be losing your touch:mrgreen:

How do you actually record who is the owner? My daughter bought a car but her partner is the keeper of as she doesn't drive.

Owner would probably be seen as whoever's name is on the invoice
my daughter owns the car but could not drive it as she was under 17 when she bought it so it was sorned and left on driveway. I took her car as im insured to drive any other car 3rd party and took all documents required with me to tax it. Dont see how dvla can charge me for time car was not taxed as it was sorned and not being used. Didnt even try to charm (flash cleavage) to get out of it as it was 8am and he was a grumpy police biker. Threatened to take car but let me off as I had baby in back. Lesson learned but extra dvla fine was a bit of kick when I was already down

It sucks, but the DVLA only have your word that it wasn't being used, and your word only carries as much weight as "Gav da Chav" down the road who never bothers insuring his "motaaah" - In most cases fining people the outstanding amount is about the easiest way to force them to pay up
For what it's worth I think £106 in fines is pretty good actually, most people who get caught out end up paying a lot more, especially if you fight it...
sorry no sympathy whatsoever. As TLW saysa the fine from DVLA is because in their eyes you have lied and the car is being used whilst declared SORN.
you do know yu can tax a car online nowadays, which means ther is less of an excuse for driving an un taxed car saying you were just onthe way to do it.

Yep it sucks H, and i for one believe you buy then i know you, the dvla does not. My dad was done for this before, whilst going through his divorce just forgot about his road tax. 9 months later i spotted it and told him, next day he went to post office, guess when he got caught as well, sods law... He was fined the cost of the missed months, again, could have been worse.

could not tax on line as I did not have a reminder. needed to go to post office with mot and v5. Had to go to main post office and foolishly thought Id be ok taking the car to save me walking 3 miles - obviously not.

if the car is already SORNED you cannot tax the vehicle on line you must take it to the post office or the DVLA office to tax ...i know this, as ive just tried it last month and did the same last year after i had my accident ,my car was sorned for 4 months ,but its still not an excuse to drive without the proper valid docs for the car.........

Sorry but, Actually you can tax it online with the v5, you don't need a reminder.
