View Full Version : The 'Org Mountain Bikers Welsh Weekend 2010
Wow, thats a lot of stuff Matt.
Me, clothes and bike....job done. :D
Quick Q, has anyone got any old off road tyres they no longer use that they would mind me borrowing for the weekend? Just thought I would ask.
Mike - do I need a sleeping bag?
That is why I packed spares, thought someone might want to use them ;)
I have a pair of old Michelin wild grippers, and a pair of brand new Conti Speed Kings - you are welcome to borrow either mate.

Tyres sorted. Mr law has kindly offered to loan me a set of wtb prowler which will do the job nicely.

My +1 cannot do Saturday so I am wondering whether to do Penmachno first , that way you can pick me up on the way past , and then she can do Sunday which will be Llandegla so she can pick me up on the way past without putting any of you lot out as far as To`ing and Fro`ing goes . Plus Llandegla is an easier ride on Sunday for those that may feel a bit cream crackered after Saturdays shenanigans . I reckon we could do with being at either destination around 9pm , that way we beat the very earlies , miss the late arrivers and we also get to finish the rides before things get too dark . Either way it is not too early a bolt for you lot to get up either .

Mike - do I need a sleeping bag?
Depends, someone will have to kip on a floor, so if you want to be the one, bring a sleeping bag! :-D There are three beds, so someone misses out, although there are some cushions (and Matt's airbeds).

Mike - No worries, will pack either a sleeping bag or chuck a spare duvet in Wolfies car. Also, presume Wolfie has your postcode?
Badger - Sounds good on the ride plan.
I'm all packed, leaving work at 12 and then will meet Mr Wolf and Mr Law at mine around 2pm ish. Can't wait.

you'all have a great weekend, hope the weather is kind to you.
Saw a nice Hardtail MTB in Decathlon yesterday, SRAM 9 speed, Avid Juicey brakes, rockshock forks £499.
So I may well go for that unless Halfrauds have a better deal on the Boardman, as both are similar specs

Thats cos they're all too knackerd :p
Any pics
Well, what a weekend that was.
A few casualties - Wolfie's knees, Venom's Knee, Luckypants elbow and ribs, Baaaaaadger's lungs/thighs/back, Drew's ring (fnaaar), my gears today, and just me generally yesterday.
A few funny sights - Venom disappearing into the ditch, Wolfie wandering around Tesco's in Drew's trackie bottoms and no socks or shoes.
Pacman was hard work for me yesterday - I think it was the first climb that didn't help, however Llandegla today was a right giggle.
Big thanks to Mike for the awesome breakfasts, and everyone else for all the pi55taking, pointing and laughing and giggles.
And apologies for my little wind issue last night :p
Top weekend guys, look forward to the next one - I'll remember to take my lube next time ;)

Sounds like a grand weekend, nice work folks!
Pacman was hard work for me yesterday - I think it was the first climb that didn't help
We did Penmachno as a recovery ride because we were all feeling a bit knackered. Mistake  My mate Dave nearly killed us all in his fury, luckily he was too tired to catch us

They're nice those. Not very good wheels but otherwise ace. Usually I'd say get a Carrera Fury though, they're even acer but they've just put the price way up so that come xmas they can say "Look, £200 off!".

A few funny sights
The look on Wolfie's face after he made a big jump on that final gnarly descent at Penmachno... big grin, look of consternation, look of horror and finally look of pain. :D

Well, I assume I'm the last one home so just to safe home safe and a big thanks to everyone who made it what it was - me and Badger were talking yesterday about how it all sprang from a few comments on Facebook into this
I'm keen to do a weekend on the IOW at some point - there's no proper trails like this w/e but you have amazing views and some proper hills, not the little ones we just did...;)

Last year we spoke about doing an org mtb'ers border raid, glentress and innerleithen. Shall we actually do it this year? I can't put anyone up but I know the area and I could get a few people down from edinburgh if people want to get the train up. All flavours of riding between those 2 from beginners up to proper downhill shock and awe, and it's a good jumping off point if anyone fancies a longer trip too.
Just really thinking out loud but maybe May, driest month and all that... If there's enough numbers one of the other trailbuilders runs a brilliant bike-oriented guesthouse that sleeps 12 people (up to 15 at a push) and if we could take the whole house it's £370 for 2 nights so it works out cheaper than B&Bs would... Bike storage in the garage, BBQ out the back.
Wouldn't need to get loads of people o'course but that's a nice idea  All of Peebles is set up for riding so there's any number of guesthouses etc, or the wigwams (like at the Glencoe Massacre only, well, newer and more boring) at the trailhead...

So... I'm keen to do something like this again in the near future, I reckon I could find beds for a few people
After the success of the "'Org Mountain Bikers Welsh Weekend 2010" is there any interest in an "'Org Mountain Bikers Epic Island XC Endurance Event" ???
I can't give you singletrack like Llandegla, the Island is mostly chalky bridleways and rolling hills, but if you like XC or not it's some pretty epic views and distance riding.
I'd say do just a weekend, meet and eat Friday evening, spend Saturday on the trails and then lazy start Sunday and get everyone off earlyish so they get a good night before work the next day. If people can get themselves and bikes to any ferry I can provide transport to and from for as many bikes as we can stack on the trailer in one go so no need to pay to bring cars over. Ride would start at my place so no need to drive anywhere while you're here.
I'm thinking early to mid December, the IOW is nowhere near as cold as the rest of the UK, thanks to the surrounding water, but it won't be tropical, I might even have to retire the shorts...

Well if you don't do it this year, then it would be a good basis for a weekend next year

Courtesy of Lily haveing a quick look would cost £18 on ferry foot passenger prices and £64 on trainfare to portsmouth.
So approaching Xmas I would be a deffo no no as don't want to commit knowing can't afford it.

I would prefer it in the New Year at some point too rather than this year . I would rather get myself a bit more bike fit over the coming Winter months so I can enjoy these epics a bit more in the New Year :) ( I reckon a few others would mirror the same sentiment as well)

OK, I'll have a word with Rich at the weekend, like I say it doesn't have to be at his place, that needs a fair number and some advanced planning but it does fit nicely. I'll see how long in advance he'd expect to book out and take it from there.
Are we talking about 2010 or 2011?
May 2010 has already happened so 2011 would be more practical  Is that a Freda? I nearly got myself a Bongo but insurance was a sod...

Yep its a Mazda Bongo, fully comp £283 for me and the wife, although on a limited milage policy.
It was through a specialist broker for imported vehicles

Well if you do, then join the Bongo fury club first, as you get discounted insurance with them
If I specified the Bongo as only used for camping trips and no regular commuting trips it would have been £220
For what I paid for it, I'm happy, needs tidying and a couple of things sorting out. But what I paid is nothing like the stupid money my brother in law paid for a 1978 VW, with no luxuries like air con or easy 70mph crusing. Each to their own I suppose
Just taken my Boardman back to Halfords as I still couldn't get it to shift down the block on the rear (remember my hissy fit at Llandegla? :smt070)
I now have a brand new Sram x9 (rrp £76) which shifts lovely :smt038

SRAM are just as good as Shimano , only reason why I stuck with Shimano was the ratio for my Shifters , plus the XTR mech I own has been on every single one of my bikes , replace the Jockey wheels every couple of years (about £9) and it still runs sweet .

I've sorted mine today too. Replaced the chain ring that Mr Badger kindly donated, cleaned the bike all over, lubed everything up. Now running sound as a pound........even the gear changing issue seems to have gone. Maybe I had some crud in the Deraileur that was causing issues. Who knows.
Next step, saving up pennys for a full sus frame. Looking at used Marins and Orange frames mainly but also looking at others. Keeping my eye out on feabay for any bargains.
