Well I have sat in bored and ill all day and decided, I am buying a Gixer .... paid off my bank loan so I am not bothered if I get another loan or save.
Question is do I buy now when they may be a little cheaper and not use it much or wait until Spring next year :)
Ohhh a GSXR750 in black is coming to the Woozle home soon :smt026

Thinking of K7 or K8, and it has to be black :)
Suits my height and a little less weight than the SV so I should have a bit more confidence when riding :)
Want to go a bit further afield next year and I know I wont do that on my SV :)
And yes BP, a little furry package may tempt me out ...... but I bet ya wont get the straight jacket on me, I know how to play normal !

how about something like this?

Wait, til either just before Christmas, or in January, next year. Just as Suzuki annouce the new models, because any dealer K10's will be wanting to shift them to make room for new stock, so the price of bikes will come down.
I saved £1400 on the screen price buying doing this when I bought mine.
from what I have seen, 2nd hand prices arent what they were, also all the places around here, dont seem to have much stock of 2nd hand bikes and the prices are bl**dy ridiculous.
You might find you get a better deal / saving if you buy new... especially if Suzuki run the 0% finance deals again...
re the 600 / 750 argument, I've ridden both, I prefer the lazier way of the 750, especially on a long journey, but I'd say test ride them both and see which one you prefer, not much in it handling wise...

i went for a k7, was tempted by a k8 but prefer the small standard exhaust on the k7, as far as i can remember the main difference on a k8 is the power switch - which ive heard is useless and a few minor tweaks but with a HUGE exhuast which i dont like.

You was sat today looking at Gixer 750's thinking I really like the K6 & K7 bikes they look really nice...
I have rode a few 600's I would like a sports bike, had my SV for over 3 years now fancy a change. What are the 750's like to run, do they eat through tyres much quicker than the SV? Does anyone use one for riding around town? I have short legs, does the K6 have a shorter or taller seat height than an SV? May find out how much I'll get done on insurance then go ride one see if I like it.

Running costs
120 miles to a tank ish, worst I have had was 85, best 150 odd, but that was pushing it with the fuel light on for longer than I felt comfortable.
Servicing, service interval same as the SV, cost about the same.
Rear tyres :
BT014 - 1800 miles
Corsa III / Pilot Power 2CT - 3 to 3500 miles
Metzler Z6 - Replaced after about 4500 miles as was very very square, due lots of motorway miles / long trips.
If you cane it, then yes it'll eat the tyres, I'm quite hard on mine as I like to get the bike stood up and then wind the throttle on. If I rode it a little more smoothly, I'm sure I'd get more mileage out of my rear tyres.
Only thing mine has needed so far is
Set of front brake pads and a clutch cable. As well as normal servicing stuff, such as oil, air filter, plugs etc.
I commuted on mine for a fair while, including filtering / riding around town. Copes with it no problem. TBH everything I have done on it, its coped with it easily. Its for me a far better bike than the SV was.
If you are short, dont get a K5, its tall, go for the K6 onwards bikes as they are physically smaller, not sure how the seat height compares to the SV though.
I've a K5, 25'000 trouble free miles and counting.
Hmmm, an uncanny number of folk on here looking at a GSXR upgrade. Something in the water?
I actually love the look of the K7 and K8, so not fussy either way. 120 miles to a tank is a bit paltry when I've been used to 180 without worry. I used to get 140-150 (usually) from the SV. I did have it drain the tank in less than 100 once and was caught short!
fizzwheel
05-10-10, 10:08 PM
I drained the tank of a pointy SV in 85 miles once... it was a loan bike and I ragged it... best I got from my curvey SV was 160 miles to tank its pretty comparable fuel range with the GSXR. I reckon the GSXR is better on the motorway for MPG than the SV was though.
I wrote this a little while after I picked up my GSXR

depends on the tyre, i have road 2's on mine and they are great, not recommeded for the 750 but Ive had no problems, they have done 4 track days this year and about 3-4k and still have life left in them. I am not super quick but fairly fast road rider and they have never let me down. On the track they are good but not great but I will be getting another set once these run out
mileage wise i get about 100 to a tank, cost about £12 to fill back up

I've had my 750 for about 2.5 years now, I stretched out the OEM BT-016s to about 5k miles and now have PP 2CTs, which seem decent. Don't do that many miles as it's my second bike and I haven't been riding much this year.
Re: fuel I have had max 110 miles or so, min just under 70. It's worse than my K7 600 was, but only by about 5-10 miles per tank.

Be interesting to see if they fit the earlier bikes (without changing discs or anything). The GSX-R brakes are not supposed to be fantastic compared to other sports bikes, although I have to say I find them fine (having not tried anything better, of course...).
I was getting tempted by some of those M4 Brembos but these could help save my wallet

I also find them fine, However when compared with the Brembo's on Liz's 749S, the Brembo's have better braking power and feel at the lever.
I haven't read the entire thread, so what year are you going for Shelly?
I've ridden a K6 and it was fooging fantastic. Everything about it was better than the SV, and I wasn't simply blown away with the performance, it was the brakes, suspension and surprisingly comfort which I liked.
You can pick up a 2010 model with no miles for about £7k as the new 2011 comes out soon. I need to age a bit as most insurers won't touch me, but I'm getting one for my birthday in March, so hoping I can get new old stock then! Given up on the track bike idea as it will work out too much with van insurance etc. :)

Ya now I think I am gonna get a brand spanking new one and get it next year :)
I will test ride a few early part of next year and do some damn hard saving to get part payment :-) Stuff the extra 5% VAT I dunna care ;-)
£6,699 is the cheapest brand new I can find. List is over £9k so quite a nice saving!
I'll probably plum for a 2010 new old stock, unless I can get money off a 2011 to bring it below £8k as I can't afford anything more. If you haven't ridden one yet, you are in for a pleasant surprise! :)
If I like it tomorrow, then i'll probably go for either a K7 or K8 depending on whether I prefer the 600 or 750. Budget is around £5k so we'll see what can be had for that.

Rob, having ridden the K6 750 back to back against a K7 600, I found the 750 engine had a lot more "character", the 600 was too linear and anodyne for my liking, the 750 has more of a snarl.
Enjoy the test rides and hope you find one that you like.

07-10-10, 04:33 PM
They have Arashi stamped into the rotors. Even asking a few bike mechanics about their experience with them I was still nervous about ordering them but after using them for 4 trackdays now they are still excellent with no warping. I'll see if I can find them on t'internet and post a link. I used them to replace some iron EBC discs where one was warped (I was told you couldn't warp an iron disc, you live and learn). I was at Donnington yesterday in the morning it was damp so I used my wets with standard new Suzuki discs on (got them for bargain price) by third session it had dried up so swapped to dry setup with wavy discs and it was night and day the performance of the discs. All other trackdays had been either wet or dry so I had been unable to test them back to back.

I'm not questioning how good the wavy discs you got are, but you can easily get the rear hopping with standard GSX-R brakes too? (did it for 3 days in Portugal this year!)
The calipers are supposed to be the "weak" point as the change to the R1 gold/silver spot calipers is a known/common/worthwhile upgrade. I'm not sure the discs are known to give that much of a change, comparatively.
Having said that, the biggest improvement I made to the brakes was adjusting the suspension to lessen the hopping, so I could brake harder !
Well I wont be buying a GSXR. After test riding both the 600 and 750 back to back today (along with the Street Triple's and a KTM), I found them to be dare I say it, a little bland and I found the riding position suitable for fast A roads but not so good in the tighter stuff. I still have my SV.....cos I am crap at selling things. Was thinking about it being a winter hack but A. it's too bloody clean and B. it hurts my shoulder too much.

I have an SV ArtyLady :-) thinking of keeping her too and buying a GSXR.
Once you ride something like a Gixer, you really wont want to ride the SV much anymore.

It's just a bike.....
And better to chuck the SV down the track than a new bike.

No point going on a track with a different bike, won't teach you anything about using your usual bike. And the soggy SV stock suspension and ground clearance won't inspire any confidence.

I disagree.

I want to do track days for fun and confidence, not so much about learning about the bike I ride.
Since my off, over 2 years I still have the mental block and I want to get over that. I am not throwing a brand spanking new Gixer around a track when I have a SV that I can use and no point me buying another bike to throw around the track.
I may get my confidence by just riding the Gixer but if I do then the SV can be sold.
Or I may find something more fun to spend £2k on and sell the SV for that, but I love Zuky

Sell the SV and buy my GSX-R 750 K5 in (slightly tatty matt) black. Sorted. When do you want to come and look at it?
I'm off to look at a GSX-R 750 K7 TT Centenary Ltd Edition tomorrow...only 2k miles and if all is good I shall purchase I think.

K7's are known as being the best gixxer 750 I've been looking at them (and older blades) and taz have a few at or around the £5k mark. IMO i would buy now and grab a bargain as showrooms tail off this time of year. Apart from my last new bike i always buy around Sept Oct time. I paid £3700 for a bandit with loads of kit fitted, rrp was £3995!!! and got £500 off a Zed 750 and 0%. The only reason i bought my cb1000r in april was due to the cb being priced on the old price £7495 when new stock would be priced at £8295. kerching
