View Full Version : Taking the bike off the road

I am in 2 minds at what to do at the moment. I have a brand spanking new this year SV, with not a mark on it. I don't want it destroyed over a winter like we had last year.
I am just starting my Advanced riding course so I need to see that out.
However I have torn my knee cartlidge mountain walking so I think it may be time to take my bike off the road for winter NOW.
Anyone else doing the same, or are you going to brave the salt and corrosion?

Mines in the garage tucked up for the winter. I'm done with winter riding.
If you are going to ride it then cover all the metal bits in ACF-50 and then dont wash it again till the spring.

Yeah I have to admit I don't know if I can be arsed with it. There is salt on the roads and my bike is still brand spanking. I don't enjoy riding in rain, never mind cold horrible carnage!
Surely I am not on my own!

Mines away till spring.
If I'm going out, it will be on the KTM now.
It would have to be a very nice day for me to take out the daytona at this time of year.

Mine didn't have ACF-50 on it last year... and I rode it throughout winter for fun (got a car for the mundane task of commuting).
This was New Year's Eve up at the Ponderosa Cafe (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=144577) last year. The bike was and still is fine and not rusted whatsoever, just well cleaned after each and every ride in that type of weather to remove all the road salt and crud.

Yep Fook that. Mines going in the garage - you deserve a medal for riding in that.

Had mine out yesterday for a blast, still nice out there but by 'eck it got cold once the sun went down!
If I had a few quid spare I'd pick up a cheap, ratty hack for playing on over the winter this isn't winte yet, I hasten to add!) and keep the good bike, good.

I think it is time time to start using the A6 until the snow has fooked off
put mine away end of september, probably bit too early this year, but Ive been using it daily since the start of march so time the sv got a decent rest and TLC.
said last year id ride it through the winter, and by november, gave up :p:mrgreen:, and this year its not happened either.
Simply cant be bothered with washing it down after every salty ride out, furred up an rgv by using it through a winter :smt009

i will ride it through winter, good excuse to replace naff bolts with stainless ones, and a good reason to strip it down over the crimbo holidays.
although i am after a trail bike to use instead so it doesn't mater as much if i throw it down the road

its not winter officially til December 23rd I think..
if u lay it up over winter check your tax.. just cos u not using it and it off the road it is an offence (£80 fine ! ) if you dont SORN it ..
I rode through winter on my SV...but can't decide what to do with the new steed. Tempted to try and find a cheapy car for the winter tbh.

ive done just that, bought a £400 alfa to tide me over.
And yeah the rgv wasnt a wise move, G plate 250, so not a really really fancy one  but still a fun toy.

Im riding my SV through its second winter, simply through lack of alternative whilst at uni.
I just did a quote on this...http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1996-FORD-FIESTA-LX-BLUE-/280576591682?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4153ab0742
Insurance for it is more than what I'm paying for my GSX-R which is worth six times the fiestas value, and I've only been riding 2 yrs with 2yrs ncd, but have 4yrs and 4yrs ncd on cars. I really don't understand fooking insurance. Looks like I'm running to work.

21 mate. Quite a few companies told me to bugger off, but ended up with Carole Nash. Only ended up paying a couple hundred more than I was insuring the SV for, and I've got a lower excess now! ;)
Think I might not use mine over winter much, I need an excuse to lose weight anyways.

at least it only cost £60ish to add another bike to my policy + a bit of excess for something like a 225cc yamaha serrow

Wimps the lot of you ;)
Over xmas last year a few madlanders, went out 1 sunday afternoon for a ride, it had snowed overnight and morning and had covered the ground, it more or less had melted by lunchtime, so out we went.
I used my sv whenever it was reasonable over winter and my bike was fine, but i did clean it after every use.
I have a second bike now so wont use my sprint much over winter.
Went out sunday, it was cold, but heated grips rock :p

Mines going to be braving the winter, just like my last bike did. I'll borrow the parents car if it gets really bad.
This weekend im striping the bike and cleaning it, then I'l do the same come march ish. In the mean time, it'l be washed after every wet ride and once a week on a sunday. Each time coated with fs365. My old bike was still shiney even after about 6000 miles through last years winter (that was bl00dy cold)

I'll connect up my heated grips and change my gloves, about all...

A few pointers for storing a bike over winter.
- Brim the tank and put in an additive and run engine. Prevents rust in tank etc
- get the wheels off the floor to prevent flat spots. (if can't get them off floor fill them with air and rotate often, and keep them off concrete ie carpet.
- Get a battery charger or remove battery
Any others just add.

My bike will be braving the winter. I would buy a cheap car but there is literally nothing that I can insure for reasonable money. Im 22, no claimes, but not got the cleanest of licenses. Might get a cheap winter hack though.

I'll be using mine...covered in ACF-50. The corrosion was so bad last year I just swapped the front end for a Gixer's ;)

in all honesty the snow had melted down here on the low grounds so I headed upto helmsley, had a coffee and then headed out towards sutton bank. Snow started to appear at the side of the road but not on the road - then by the time I got to the top of sutton bank hill it was slushy and icey down the side roads. Sutton bank itself was ok-ish, just wet. When I pulled off for the 2nd picture my front wheel nearly slid on a bit of ice in the gutter but I got my foot down in time (see also, shat my panties)...
