View Full Version : There are two types of drivers
The lot who drive at 90 - 100 in an Audi because they have a company car and the company pays the fuel bills.
And the people who have slowed down cos they have to pay for their own fuel. Very obvious on the motorway today.

LOL!
I thought the exact same thing yesterday! I took the car to Costco and no the motorway I was quite happy to just make progress at between 60-70 along with quite a few other cars all the while noticing the Audi/BMW's motoring up the "fastlane" I thought the obvious divide between the 2 types of drivers was significant and drew the exact same conclusion as yourself.

what you have to remember is they're obviously more important than you and MUST get to that meeting, that could have been a phone call, and they must be there NOW!!!

lol, totally agree.
Odd though that when Im travelling on works time to site/meeting or even to get to the copy & binding place before it closes. I always take it easier than when driving in my own time, not because of fuel its purely because I'd be soooooooooooooooooo frustrated if I got points on my licence whilst doing something for work.

when you buy one of those cars you have to sign a contract to say you will only drive on the inside lane at 90, not let the person behind you past, race the guy on his bike because your diesel car is obviously so much faster, when you loose that race blag up to your mates at the golf convention that "you nearly had him and he pulled over to say how awesome your car is" even tho you got the beat down put on you, oh and stay in that lane until your exit were you then have to hack across the other two cutting everyone up and causing accidents....... oh and do all that whilst not indicating
It's called the c0ck car law

my boss is one of the bmw fast lane types. does 90 down a 30. Thinks hes next in line for clarksons job on top gear, and comes out with stuff like. "well if their car isnt as good as mine they shouldnt be holding me up" and "if your a bikeist and your in my way ill just run you over" makes my blood boil sometimes.

Don't you know that German Manufacturers put Indicators in the "optional extras" section of the order form?

I noticed the same the other day, sat at 75mph on the motorway and was overtaking loads of people, whereas before I would have been a rolling road block.
Liz has noticed the same on her commute to work to.
and yes the indicators on our Audi do work fine thank you very much :p

So can we now say that high petrol prices save lives by lowering speeds. I shouldn't joke some MP might see it and our Government will defo put it through as a motion...

Poverty... sucking all the fun out of driving since 2010
Problem is people think that the inside lane is the fast lane... :(
I always think 'if you can afford a BMW then you can afford to wait'.
In Liverpool today - in lane 1 on the M53, I set the cruise to 55:cool: In 6th gear, it was doing 1,750rpm (diesel)and 48/gallon:cool: I had a few trucks overtake but most reset their cruise and we had us a convoy:cool:

I used to *race up the motorway every day from Northampton to Brum.
It always took me about an *hour or so due to traffic.
One evening on the way home, I was tired and just couldnt be bothered with it all so I stuck the cruise control onto 70 and just pootled along.
The difference in time was about *10 mins or so.
I tried it a few more times and noticed that all the cars screaming past are having to slow down for the next car in front and then booting it away again.
More often than not, the knob jockey that was tail gating me was only 3-4 cars in front of me queing to get into brum further down the road.
Now (in the car) I tend to sit at the speed limit where and when conditions allow and have a more economical and more relaxed drive.
Yes I am getting old and sounding boring but I'm also near doubling my economy over a year and am now less wound up when I get to where I'm going.
I dont drive for fun anyway as I do too many miles in a car to enjoy it.
My car is just a tool for work, the bikes are for fun :)
*all within the legal limit for licence saving reasons....

I love doing that in 30's, I sit at just over the limit 32 or 33 and let the B's push you along the road through towns and villages and wait for the unlimited sign (sorry national speed limit sign) and gun it away waving to them. childish but hellishly good fun :)
if people drive up your ass on the motorway I like to vary my speed just 5 10 miles an hour does it, then gently push on the brake peddal just enough to light the brake lights and excellerate away from the idiot who's now braking, probably dangerous but it stops them sitting so close to you.
and not very IAM :(
More often than not on my commute to work I find myself travelling on the inside lane doing 70mph and undertaking all the traffic in the other two lanes. I just find it incredible that every single vehicle in the other two lanes will not pull in because they believe they will be going faster than the vehicle in front if only they could get passed it.
This also got me to wondering if I am running the risk of being prosectuted for undertaking when the inside lane I am in, is clear in front of me for the best part of a half mile or more. I'm not speeding and the lane in front is clear.

I have noticed that you don't actually save much time at all when booting it along during the day, however personally I stay A LOT more alert when I'm driving fast as oppose to just plodding at the speed limit. Driving back from Leamington Spa to Lowestoft on a sunday night at about 10pm, there was no other choice in my mind but to drive flat out almost the entire way home just to keep me concentrating (until I got caught speeding by an unmarked traffic cop, which should have been a ban but it was EXTREMELY lucky circumstances:pale:).
Does seem quieter, I went through Brum on fri afternoon on the M6 and usually get caught in a jam from hilton park down to the M5 but just sailed through at 50 with no hold ups at all, made a nice change tbh.

Thats very lucky, I drive the m6 alot am and pm, the 50mph section is naff every afternoon not so bad at 6:30 on way to work (J6). Due to the traffic joining and leaving the M5, up past the M54 is good. The trick is to stay in the outside lane lol and get gone but i dont own an Audi or BWM so im ok :)

no you clear as long as you dont make a deliberate manover to get past a car/cars infont of you by entering the inside lane to move back across the carrageway once passed, tbh undertaking when done illegally is really easy to see, compared to someone who's "just got lucky" with the traffic congestion

Yes, seriously... 3 days a weeks, every other week... and its better than my commute the 'other' week which is over 1000 lol

I see undertaking as passing someone on the left, then pull straight back into the lane they are in.
I often pass idiots sat in the outside or middle lane on the left... the difference is that I'm already in the lane to their left, and it's always clear for a very long way.
The 4 lane part of the M1 from 24 to 28 is bad for this, people just dont have lane discipline in this country

I figure cruise control at 85 is relatively safe, sat nav says 80 at that speed. Vans are relatively easy to spot but they do use some unusual unmarked cars on the M40 which is always a worry lol.

Yep, I fit the corporate driver profile, but I DON'T cut up, tail gait, road rage, undertake, block the outside lane, etc, and I do indicate.
What does drive me nuts 'cos I use cruise control is people who seem incapable of choosing a steady speed then sticking to it. So they sit up your ar$e, you let them past, then two minutes later they are in the way, so you pass them, two minutes later they are up your ar$e again. This carries on until they get annoyed with you for overtaking them.
More often than not on my commute to work I find myself travelling on the inside lane doing 70mph and undertaking
Thank god for that, somebody on this thread knows which lane is the inside and which is the outside.

And those who always have 3, 6 or 9 points on their license, take the ticket on the chin when it comes, but don't get caught often enough to get banned. :smt039
9 points is not a comfortable place to be mind you and you have to behave and be really careful not to make any illegal mistakes, but whenever it has happened to me, I've only been 3-6 months away from a set of 3 points becoming 3 years old.
-Ralph-
18-01-11, 06:51 PM
If you are not in a risk taking mood, there isn't a big journey time difference between 80 and 90 mph, and 80 on a car speedo is actually about 76 in reality, and the ACPO guideline for a ticket is 79. So at an indicated 80 mph, your actually pretty safe.

18-01-11, 09:10 PM
I see undertaking as most people do - obvious intentional pull to the left and back in.
I see passing other cars in the middle and outside lane becuase they are too dumb to change lane sitting at 50-60 when the inside is clear "passing in lane"
-Ralph-
18-01-11, 09:12 PM
But at some point a lorry overtakes, taking lane 2 down to 55mph, and lane 3 always starts moving quicker again, and all those cars you just passed, pass you. How long do you have to leave between lane changes, for it to become passing in lane, rather than undertaking?
fizzwheel
18-01-11, 09:18 PM
Ralph, I noticed that to with the cruise control on. I think I overtook and was overtaken by the same car numerous time on the M6 the other weekend. I didnt know whether to laugh or get frustrated in the end I got annoyed with it and booted the throttle for a mile or so and then flicked the cruise back on again and I never saw that car again after that.
hongman
18-01-11, 09:23 PM
Short answer, dont know. In a way its for the plod to decide should they feel the need to.
Way I see it, right or wrong, if I'm in any lane doing 70 and I'm passing cars either side, I dont care.
If I see a clear run in the lane to my left, and I'm currently stuck behind another car doing less than 70, I'll pull into the clear lane.
Obviously Im not flicking from lane to lane as soon as an opportunity arises, but if I've been stuck behind a line of cars doing 60 in the middle lane when the "slow" lane is clear, Im using it.
Yes I drive a BMW.

Just be careful undertaking trucks that are in lane two. They have a pretty big blind spot where the mirrors give a view straight over the roof of your car towards the back of the trailer, and could easily side swipe you by trying to return to lane 1. If your going to do that be expecting it and be ready to swerve onto the hard shoulder if you need to. Best not to at all TBH as the hard shoulder could disappear for a section, or there could be a broken down vehicle sitting on it, just when you need it as an escape route.
hongman
18-01-11, 09:35 PM
Yeah, I've seen it nearly happen lots of times. Nice to be reminded though.
Is weaving in and out of flowing (lets say, 50+) traffic an offense, or is that classed as filtering?
I must admit I do like to weave a bit given the opportunity, if I think it's safe. What some might call being "agressive" others view as "making progress".

Being a HGV 1 driver myself, I wouldn't even consider it. :pale:
I was a total company car speed demon, my house to a hotel in Barnstaple, 3 hours no problem... Then I became white van man, but the van had a speed limiter. 69MPH on the speedo, 63MPH according to my prat nav.
Drive with your foot flat on the floor, makes no difference same speed.
Then you start to notice, you catch up with the speed demons, traffic holds them and their 3rd lane hogging mates up...
So then I change job and the current white van has no limiter and after I train myself not to bury the accelerator everywhere I go. I've slowed down, but I still reserve the right to pass people on bends, there really are 2 kinds of drivers. Those that can only drive on straight roads and those who wish they were actually on their bike.

Its not half as bad as it sounds. I'm really quite a poosy when it comes to taking risks, so I'm not doing it unless I consider it safe. Not making people brake or change course either (well, not dramtically or unpredictably).
The amount of times traffic is flowing but there people leave massive gaps between the vehicle in front.

What about old people driving with hats on, they're the worst no question. They don't even notice when you fold their offside wing mirrors in, to get past them. They're a special breed - a type of driver with charecteristics all of their own.
Driving with a hat on is excellent, it keeps your head warm when you wind the window down to shout at youngsters.
how about getting caught doing 120mph. you get taken into the back of the car and asked 'ASBO' or 'court'? my mate now has an ASBO and no points or fine. buuuuuut if he get caught doing anything wrong in the next year while driving he gets instant ban and car confiscated.
seems to have worked as he is sticking to speed limits now.

The caption of taking a tank to the pub. You may well laugh but I have done exactly that. Can't say when or where as you never know who is looking. Once after doing a pretend war, the tanks all had to be taken back to camp on low loaders. Unfortunately the pretend war didn't finish when it was supposed to and the low loaders said they couldn't pick up the tanks until the following Monday, the day at the time being late Friday night. It was decided a coach would take everyone back but a chosen few would have to stay the weekend and 'guard' the tanks. Well after a very boring Friday night with no alcohol or TV, I decided it would be better if we were more well equipped for the Saturday night. So a tank was 'borrowed' for a resupply. Drove it to the nearest town, parked in the local supermarket car park and proceeded to go shopping. After having bought the essential supplies required we headed back. On the way we spotted a nice little place by the river so pulled into the car park and went in for a quick pint. The looks we got from people were interesting. :)
