Just had a call from Vodafone as I've just asked for my PAC.
After a bit of haggling and serval "great" offers I've now been offered HTC Desire HD, 700 xnet minutes, 3000 landline minutes, 250 text and 500meg data usage. For £25 pm for 18 months (18 month contract)
Should I snatch their hand off or push even harder for a better deal,

Depends how much you want a new phone,
Its very cheap now to get sim only deals?

Thinking of trying to get a 1 month rolling contract with vodafone, same usage, my phone just very cheap. And waiting to get a good deal on a HTC Thunderbolt.
BB, That's a blinding deal.

That reminds me that my wifes phone contract with Vodaphone is well over due for renewal.
Time to haggle

Bought mine a new phone at Christmas, as her old phone was knackered and I had run out of ideas for presents.
It was pink and seemed to satisfiy her ;)

I just got the Desire HD, impressed with the phone so far, except the battery life is truly awful, at the moment it needs charging by the time I get home from work at 6. I have been using it quite a bit but thats unacceptable really. I have played around with some settings and using an app killer to try and improve the battery life so I will see how it pans out. I have also read that the battery improves after a few charging cycles so will wait and see.

Problem is that the HD is now a bit long in the tooth.
Ok its only been out 5 months or so, but in phone terms, thats a lifetime.
There are a bunch of new phones due out in the next month or so, so I wouldn't get an HD now unless in a stunning deal.

That's what I've been thinking. Might hang on for a 4G phone.

Going to have to wait a while...

Even a 24 month contract would have you waiting at the end of it for 4G...

ALL DOG poor, not just the coverage but the service too.
for as long as I live I will only ever have contracts with o2 and vodaphone. COverage and customer service is 2nd to none. Never ever ever again will I be with Orange, with them I cant even get signal in my own house despite been able to see the mobile mast out of the rear bedroom.

I've never had the misfortune of having them as my supplier, but all reviews I've heard of them are similar to yours. :)

I was with Orange for years and always had good service, upgrades etc. I moved from them when I moved back to Wales because there is no coverage from them at my house. Vodafone coverage here is very sketchy but one of their SureSignal (femtocell) boxes sorts that. Voda have been very good and I'll stick to Voda because of the SureSignal, means I don't need to worry about coverage when house hunting.
SureSignal?
Do tell more? I struggle for signal when I am back at the folks house!?

It's a little box that plugs into my internet router and provides a full 3G mobile signal in the house and garden. 'Signal' back to vodafone is over the internet connection. I got mine for 'free' with my new contract (contract was cheaper but SureStart added £5 p/m), but you can buy them quite cheaply. AFAIK Vodafone are the only ones providing this service. You will need a 3G phone, as it is 3G only.

WOW !!!
You mean that they managed to convince you that it was a good idea for YOU to pay so that you could recieve their service in lieu of actually providing a service at THEIR cost.
I have this bridge for sale, interested?

Yeah, yeah I know. When I bought this house we just about had signal in all the rooms. A new house was built behind us that blocks the weak signal and I lost the ability to make calls from my mobile. It makes sense for me to buy the sure signal and use some of my (unlimited) ADSL bandwidth so that I can now use my mobile fully at home. Living in a rural location, this is one of the many compromises you make to get a 'commercially un-viable' service and join the modern world.

you got the wrong end of my comment, i missed a , i sead take it off, meaning the blokes hand
BB, you have listed the contract but haven't told us what you actually use the phone for mostly? (unless i missed it, sorry if I did).
The 3000 minutes to landlines sounds great! But... Who rings landlines these days?! That number just tricks people in to thinking it's good wen really it isn't. The Chet mins is pretty good but it's be keen to trade the 3000 mins for more xnet mins, txts or Internet mb's as 500mb isn't a massive amount, I use up my 1gb in no time.
As for phones... You have to get the iPhone 4! iPhones simply hold their money, other phones don't.
You will enter in to an 18 month contract, everyone really wants a 12 month contract how it always was. In 12 months your iPhone 4 will still be worth a fortune, trade your phone in (carphone warehouse). The money you get will buy you out of your contract and then enter in to a nice new one.
I did this with my old, battered, scratched 3G and got £115! I got my iPhone 4 for £4 (£119).
The htc will be worth about £20 this time next year.
Enough said.
Sorry for my spelling mistakes, it's the iPhones fault for that.. But don't be put off! Haha

You can get these in contract deals now.
0800 numbers cost around 20p per minute from mobiles, unbelievable when you can ring them for free from a landline...

Yeah I know 0800 are free from landlines, but so many corporate lines are 0845 and they are expensive, especially when you are left hanging on some customer "service" line for half an hour or so.Anyone have a contract where they are free?

Just been offered as above on a 1 month rolling contract
Which means you could have it for one month and then get your PAC and leave anyway.
All these sort of amazing deals they offer to make people stay customers (see also: Xbox Live, Sky) make you realize how flipping overpriced they are in the first place if it's practically the first thing they offer.
I had similar ridiculous offers from O2 when I asked for my PAC. I told the guy they should think long and hard about how much they must have ****ed off a customer of five years for me to be definitely leaving no matter what they offered me.
SureSignal?
Do tell more? I struggle for signal when I am back at the folks house!?
Suresignal is poo!! Doesn't't work properly most of the time, and why should you have to spend £50 to get a signal on your iPhone! From personal experience ( well wifes) I wouldn't ever give Vodafone any businesses as their customer service is downright appalling. Whereas I have had great service from virgin! Down to individuals experience I suppose.
On a different note O called virgin to end my contract and they have done me a 30 day rolling contract with 600 minutes 2000 texts an 1gb of data for £10 a month!! They even gave me £20 credit so the first two months are free:)

Sounds like a decent deal. I got the HTC Desire, not the HD, which has pretty ok battery life, though the best tip for making the battery go longer is turn off data when you put it in your pocket for long time (like work time) as that can eat battery, especially if its only getting 2G signal as it spends ages just refreshing Gmail and other apps.
As to getting the Desire HD now, I dunno, I love Android but there are a couple of phones that are coming out in the next month that will blow HTC's lineup out of the water! The Samsung Galaxy S2, the Playstation phone if you like that sort of thing, LG Optimus 2X, and a few others too im sure. So if you can hold on and see. :)

I mentioned this to a guy in work, Bigbaddad and he asked 'if you take the rolling 1 month contract, if you cancelled after a month would you get to keep the new phone?'

Depends on your location, i agree with the o2 suggestion, but i am constantly telling dongle uses they have been shafted by vodaphone as there home address has very weak to no vodaphone coverage, its not right seiing them without first advising the customer.

Oh dear. My contract (with Orange) is up next weekend - and after doing my research I was pretty certain that I'd go with the HTC Desire.
But now you've both said what you have... I'm not so sure. Agh!
