View Full Version : Best Place To Sell??

If this post is in the wrong place I apologise but I`m really just after some advice :D
I`m selling a 1984 Porsche 944 and I`m wondering where would be the best place to sell it? I`m not sure if it`s old enough to appeal to a porsche enthusiast and if so where do you start trying to find any porsche enthusiasts who might be interested OR would I be best just sticking in in the autotrader.
It`s an inheritance and I haven`t a clue what it`s worth so if anyone has any rough idea i`d be most grateful.
Thanks in anticipation of any replies :D
Sell it to me for a fiver. Go onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Same mileage, massively different prices :smt102
Also pistonheads.com is a good place to sell cars, especially cars that are interesting.
I have sold 4 vehicles on there relatively easily. My ex boss and I think my dad even managed to sell cars on there too. Plus its free!

I sold my Impreza on Pistonheads within 24 hours of advertising it - have a look at the 944 adverts on there now for a feel of what it might be worth:-

It certainly is, and other than the 924/928 it about the cheapest Porsche you can buy, so a good first step on the ladder of classic Porsche ownership. Where it not of interest to Porsche enthusiasts is where they are actually really closet VW Beetle enthusiasts (it's not a REAL Porsche because it has an Audi engine in the front ). The 86 onwards 944 Turbo's are more sought after and fetch better money. Yours must be a 2.5 Lux?
Any pics?

In honesty G I was thinking it might fetch around £1,000 :D
Ralph I`m not sure if it`s the lux one, a quick look just told me it was red lol It`s story is it belonged to somebody who died 6 years ago and apart from the occasional spin around the block to keep it running it`s not really been used so it`s been covered up and has been garaged.

Some people want the newest, flashiest tart mobiles, others appreciate an older model with a bit of class, driven from the rear, especially with nice flared arches ;)

pulls out my wallet. Oh look I contains a nice new £750 note[-o<
The two autotrader ads are from dealers, so will most likely be over priced. It all depends on the spec, condition and history of the car. Not using any motor is not always a good thing.
They are very nice cars with decent handling, thanks to the trans axle gearbox. I'd like one. I've room in my garage too.

In honesty when you`re female and don`t have a clue about these things I think you tend to get ripped off..... I could kick myself for the mistakes i`ve made over the years for not getting proper advice. That goes from everything from car maintenance, to fitted kitchens and mortgages...... i`ve not looked into things properly and ended up losing out.
That`s why I thought i`d ask here cos I knew i`d get some decent honest advice and i`d be equipped with the necessary info to then put the car up for sale.
I really appreciate everyones help so far, many thank guys
Theres a mag called '911 & porsche world' a lot of porsche enthusiasts read it, don't the web address but a quick google should find it and they have a classified section with loads of bods looking for 944's, i know, i nearly bought a 911 some years ago but ended up with a conservatory instead, bloody women and their 'sensibile' thinking ;)

Wouldn`t imagine those conservatory`s handle very well round corners
Thanks Stewie... will take a look at that one too :D
I had a stripped out 924S for a short while - it was the scabbiest looking Porsche I ever saw cos I hand painted it with black Hammerite.
A mate who was under the impression he'd be able to take it racing in the Porsche 924 Colway Tyres Challenge bought it as light accident damaged and bodged it straightish. He didn't read the regs properly before buying it and doing a load of work (which involved scrapping most of the interior) and then found the 2.5 litre wasn't eligible, so he flogged it cheap to me. I just stuck a couple of front seats in, hand brushed some Hammerite over the very faded red paint and drove it for a few months before breaking it for spares.

I was looking the other day out of curiosity at Porsches, I dont like 924's, 928's are to expensvie, 911's are silly money and a 944 would suit me just fine. Especially a Turbo.
But alas I have no money and nowhere to keep it !
I would have thought depending on spec and actual model you'd be looking at anywhere between £1500 upwards...

Thanks Fizz, i really need to get the full spec....... it`s red doesn`t seem quite enough lol. I`ll hopefully have more info and pics next week.

Its probably a Lux to be honest, thats the most common one's around.
Theres plenty on auto trader, it has MOT & Tax and it runs, I reckon you'll be looking at £1500 easy, maybe more. Would depend on the condition of it and what the interior is like etc etc. If its tidy and orginal that will also help.

+1, can still pick up an early 928 as a restoration project without spending silly money though, but they are generally a couple of grand more than an equivalent 924/944.
My stepfather would love a 911, but you are talking minimum 10k!

Ive wanted a 911 since I was about 10, I will have one one day, tbh If I didn't have bikes, I'd have one now.
The 944's arent bad motors, good ones can fetch some good money, good luck with the sale Claire, I'll give you £500 for it if it has MOT and runs :)

Damn you could have had a new car there Phil...... I doubt it has a current MOT so you obv won`t want it :D
Definetely do your homework before agreeing to sell it to anyone. If it's the right spec it could be worth quite a bit, if it's been sat for a while and it's in good condition maybe spend £200 getting it detailed ad speak to some specialist.

Cleaned inside and out, by a professional. Sometimes referred to as a "valet"
If its got no MOT I'd look to get that done to and maybe stick 6 months tax on it. It wont increase the value, but it'll definately make it easier to sell.

Just dont say 'valet' to a detailer
My mate does this for a living mainly on exotic cars, if you lived closer Claire he'd do it for you no bother, he does travel all over tbh, but price reflects this.
A full paint correction on a 'bad' car can cost approx £650, 2 blokes x 2 days, even 'top ups' cost £200-£300 :smt104
But for 'pound notes' he would get it looking the dogs danglies for a lot less.

Hmmmm maybe it`d be a good excuse to have a blast down the M6
A detail is not a 'valet'... It's paint correction and improvement + a whole lot more than just a wash and wax of a valet. It can make a car look better than new, removes all paint fade, on a red car you would see an insane improvement on 25+ year old car. It also removes most scratches and all swirling. A valet cost no more than £50 and a couple of hours work, a detail cost £200+ and takes a couple of days minimum.
You would probably want to keep it afterwards lol

OK so you got me on that one.
Lot of effort / expense for a 25+ year old car that you have no intention of keeping. Especially as I'd imagine that Claire is wanting to maximise the profit potential. I.e. keep her costs down.

If you were in the market for a car and seen one that had been detailed professionally, youd buy it there and then, they look amazing.
Even a brand new car would benefit from a pro polish, shine a halogen light at your paintwork and see how many scratches there are.

Honestly for a £200 detail you can add £1000's in value... If it's an old red Porsche it will likely be very faded, almost white in places... Check this out for an example. Just happens to be a red 944 like claires...

If Claire doesn't do it to maximise profit then someone else will.

Have a look at a few of the cars he's done.
A couple more examples of what a good retailer can achieve on a pink to red car... It's hard to explain without seeing the transformation in person.

Have a word with Dicky Ticker. He used to be an owner, and AFAIK is a member of the owners club. Hes likely to point you in the correct direction.

Note that some of these links are not people getting their car professionally detailed, but spending the time doing it themselves. There are some limitations to what you can do yourself, but getting a car looking really good is just a matter of time.
