View Full Version : K5 - Alternatives to stock oil cooler hoses?
One of my oil cooler pipes has started to leak. It's the longer one with right-angle bend that goes to the RHS of the oil cooler. I've seen a couple of other threads where people have mentioned that they corrode and leak.
My question is, have people found a better alternative? Right now, I can see a poor-looking set on fleabay. I'm not sure how much they'll be from my local dealer or how long I'd have to wait for one, so I'm interested in possible alternatives.
e.g.
Getting one made up in better quality materials (mine is starting to leak where where the sleeve fits on the bend).
Is there a correct length+shape+fittings diameter that I could get from an automotive parts dealer like LCP?
Any thoughts or successful or failed replacements to report?
Thanks
Edit: Dealer just quoted me £66 for the pipe, but at least reckons he can get it within 24 hours.

That looks very nice.
Someone else on here who had previously posted on this subject said he'd had some made up by a hydraulics company cheaply, but for the moment I've given taken the easy but expensive way out - bought replacement stock item for delivery tomorrow - as I don't feel I can risk leaving the current one in place and having it fail completely during my daily motorway commute.
I hate paying full price for an OEM item that may still not last as long as the rest of the bike, but I'll keep it on my mental checklist of things to upgrade on the next SV I buy, or upgrade on my current one if I've still got it in another 4 years time.

Mine has just gone today , started the bike up after 2 months and noticed that the longer pipe was a bit crumbly , it is leaking oil and I am mightily dis-chuffed .

Pirtek is the hydraulics place that might make one up for you.

Might be worth be just whipping the knackered one off and going down to local hydraulics place and get them to make one . I can`t see anything special about the K3 ones , so would there be any harm in just having a braided run with a banjo at either end ?

And I just sent a mail to Hel , see what they come up with as they don`t list a kit for the SV but they do list a complete oil cooler kit , I just want the ruddy hoses :(

Funny timing this - I'm just in the process of getting a complete set of hoses to Goodridge in Exeter as they are going to make up a set of stainless braided hoses for my K6 that will become a new kit for general sale. If there is lots of interest we may get a forum discount, I'll ask anyway. Don't know the price yet though.

For a pair of power steering pipes for the car Pirtec wouldn't give me a firm quote, they said I would have to leave the car with them and they would do it for "probably around £150 but could be more for a custom job"
A local hydraulics firm made both pipes while I waited, supplied new banjo bolts and crush washers all for £45, 1 year on and no problems at all.
Those pipes dont look crusty on my SV but now I know they're a weak point I might get them replaced as a bit of 'preventative maintainance'

Wow, didnt know they would be that pricey.
Wanted to repace mine last year but never got round to it. Only doing it for looks etc
If a group buy were to come about from Goodridge i would be interested for sure.

I would be more worried about that other oil line than a crusty bellypan bracket (Mine were like that so I had them blasted and powdercoated, because im a tart and he only charged a fiver)

I`ll change the other line out of necessity as a preventive maintenance thing . The line I took off was very corroded in comparison to that one , we are talking dark brown flakes that were about 1mm thick , not a good sign when another layer underneath that one falls off as well ...... pinholes appear and under slight pressure it will cause the leak that I was getting .

That is a good looking hose Badger! I think Goodridge are planning to supply matching new bolts as well as just hose. I don't know how stiff the new hose will be - Anyone reckon it will need a clamp to join the two where they separate?

There is no movement in the hose , the guy just measured it up , lined up the Banjos in relation and then crimped it all together so it has to be pretty bob-on , there is very limited movement for getting the bolts lined up squarely , I had a bit of a faff getting them in as I didn`t want to strip any threads by being in a rush . The hose that was used was a very high temperature one as well , able to withstand 600 degrees , as I did mention it was close to an exhaust as well .

Thanks, that's useful to know. Goodridge wouldn't do it by measuring on the bike so I'm getting them a complete set with bolts so that can do CAD drawings. Bit of a faff too but I'm not in a hurry. Should end up as a retail pack with bolts and copper washers. I must ask them the cost and if they can do the coloured covering like the brake hose!

Don`t forget that the Anodised Colouring will be on Alloy Banjo fittings , They will also offer Stainless ones
Samnooshka's SV had a pair made up by Pirtek. We simply took the old ones in and they made the new ones up in-situ. When they asked about pressures I said I didn't know (though 12psi rings a bell) and they cheerfully pointed out that it didn't matter then as they didn't have anything that bad in stock.

Yeah , they asked me what pressure it was under and I said it wasn`t worth considering but wanted a hose to withstand heat from the exhaust though at a standstill .

Any word from Goodridge on these lines yet? I'd be interested in them if the price is right
The longer RHS hose on my K3 is starting to dribble a bit, not every day though , so I called into Pirtek yesterday and yer man said he'd change both lines at the weekend for me for 50 (euro). All I have to do is bring the oil, happy out with that
Badger, did the hose you got have any name or code by any chance? You just used the same bolts/washers yeah?
xXBADGERXx
13-04-11, 04:28 PM
Used the Same bolts , should have replaced the washers but didn`t as I am not running the bike yet , so slung them back on and had no leaks so far but washers are on order , you don`t lose much oil removing that pipe anyway , so it`ll be a 10 minute job to put new washers on when and if they arrive . No part code or anything on the hose as it was made "by eye" .

The story so far: Just got the new set of hoses and bolts that Goodridge wanted, but before I handed them over I tried my local hydraulics firm. The could make a set but with ordinary zinc plated banjos, I asked for stainless banjos because of the road salt etc but they could not find any. I know they tried Pirtek and HEL without any luck.
Goodridge have sent me an email saying the fittings will probably be Alloy because of the size which seems to tie up with no stainless M14 banjos to be found.
Badger - were your end fittings plated or stainless? - I suspect not stainless as would be a lot more money than 50GBP/Euros (if brake hose is anything to go by!)
Anyone have an opinion as to zinc plated or alloy?
So thanks to ebay I have a spare short oil cooler hose (K8 VGC that cost me all of £7) and the full set came from Californian from a K8 in pristine condition (no rain I guess) that cost me £11.50 (plus £20 p+p) in 8 days.
So not sure where to go from here as I don't want to fit zinc plated hose. Will carry on with Goodridge I guess - have emailed for an estimated cost.

Must pick up some new washers before saturday, interesting that no stainless banjos could be found. If they aren't widely available then the cost of a full stainless kit will be quite high I imagine. I suppose alloy ones will still be better than the current rust piles

Just got a confirmation email (14/04/11) from Goodridge that the end fittings will be alloy due to the size. They intend for this to be a full retail kit so won't give me any prices until they have done the work.

Nice one Jambo, thanks for the advice!
In just an hour I have taken off my old hoses gone to the local Pirtek branch, had replacement stainless steel hoses made to measure and fitted them, complete with steel dowty washers with rubber inner seals. Pricey at £87 but the hoses are made to measure stainless steel, the service was instant and was given a coffee whilst waiting!
FYI If you explain what you need, Pirtek will come out and make the hoses on site at no extra cost. Obviously they will charge for labour if you need them to take the hoses off and refit them.

Sounds good! The Goodridge are blue alloy banjos. Not on their website yet (http://www.goodridge.net) but if anyone is interested I would phone Martin Taylor in Sales on 01392 369090). I don't know the retail price but will probably be close to above. Pictures here:
