View Full Version : Has anyone stubbied a Scorpion can?
As per title. Has anyone stubbied a Scorpion can? Got one for my new Gixxer but it looks far too long. Same can as photo:

I stubbied my old Viper no problems but the rivet strap on these Scorpion cans look like they are separate to the end plate. Just wondering if anyone had any experience of doing one and does it follow the same principles ie, drill out the rivets, cut the can, put the end cap back on and re rivet? It's a brand new can so don't really want to bugg*r it up
ps I'll post some photos of the new bike when I have given her a wash. Only got her last night. HPI totally clear, but it's definitely been down the road. A few more marks than I first thought. Still a bargain for what I paid.

Dan, I did and I didn't :)
My sv scorpion gained a dink in it on rideout while parked so I drilled the rivets and took it apart.
But I ended up hammering dent out to a good finish so put it back together again :)
+1. It came apart and went back together fairly simply.
Excellent. I'll give it a go then.
Cheers.

You should be fine with it.
But if you make a mess of it theres still a Yoshi Tri oval can up here in Scotland going cheap :-) Still not been put up for sale yet.

Post a pic when your done cos i might have a go as well!
Phil. Can you remember what size rivets you used? The ones I used on the Viper were too big diameter wise. I need to order some.

You can also cut a section out (where the strap will go) then weld it up and you can't see the weld because of the strap. Not as neat as drilling out rivets but works just the same

Can you remember what size rivets you used/ ie grip range. I've measured the flange on the scorpion and it measures 6.0mm working on the basis that the flange is twice the size of the hole I'm guessing I'll need a 3.2mm rivet but I'm not sure what length
3.2x6mm grip length is 1.7-3.2mm and 3.2x8mm grip length is 3.3-4.8mm.
Didn't give a toss about the viper on my curvy but I want to make a good job on the scorpion. In fact I'm a bit worried about cutting the can as I'm not sure I'll get a good finish where it's been cut.
Don't know if the can on my bike came stubbied from the factory or was a homemade jobby, but it looks and sounds amazing!

Its only 2 thin sheets of metal so dont need a long rivet.
Ralph gave me some which i used, as long as you have about a third sticking out once its gone through both sheets of metal, thatll be fine imo.
If you wanna neat cut, i would cut a piece of 18 thick plywood the same shape as the inner of the can and put it in there snugly the other side of the cut so that the good part is supported, if you undertsand that ?
Thanks Phil. I'll take a deep breath and make the cut!

I think that's a street extreme. They sound great. I think Binky has one on his rat bike.
use stainless rivits if you can.
my father-in-law and i stubbied my blueflame i didnt like the length so asked him to chop a couple of inches off.
he cut it in half ;-)
<---- look here
when you get it all apart and decide the length you want put insulation tape round the can/sleeve gives you a nice guide to cut round so you dont get a wiggerly line.
You should be fine with it.

Well I made a right royal **** up of stubbying the can. So annoyed, ruined a brand new can just to lose 4 inches. If I can't rescue of do you still have the can going cheap?
what went wrong?
put some pics of the probs might be able to sort it.
the blueflame evo that i stubbied was a right pain in the bum as it has twin exit so the inside tube had to heaverly modified/cut and welded to make it fit back together didnt think about it till we choped the sleeve
took 4 hours to fettle it.

Dan, post up some pics, if you've only chopped 4 inches, there's plenty to play with.
Yeah will do. I've got to do the bank holiday family thing today, maybe I'll get a chance later. I'm sure it's not completely ruined, I was just having a Diva strop ;) In the words of Stoner my ambition obviously outweighed my talent.
What's happened is as I've made the cut it's deformed the shape of the can and I cant get the end piece back in and I've rippled the end trying to force it in. I'm sure if I cut ann extra few cm's off It can be rescued. Just that I don't think I have the ability to do it being a ham fisted oaf that I am:rolleyes:

Its common i think Dan for the middle to be a slightly different shape to the ends anyway Dan so dont worry.
Did you put a wooden piece in the inside as you cut it to stop it deforming?
If you wanted to slightly flare the end to get the end cap on, you could make or use wooden former inside but taper the edge by a few degress, then tap it in, this should give you a few extra mm's hopefully.

Of course not! I got the rivets and went straight at it without proper planning! I'll get someone who knows what they're doing (my dad!) To make a former and have another go.
Well, I finaly got it done! It wasn't without a few issues. I got the former made and the end still didn't fit. Took some doing but I'm happy with the results
