I pwomiseee mr.

Hopefully will get a pic of me doing it soon!
I'd been to the local bike meet tonight and saw my old instructor there, who said i shouldn't even turn up with fresh unused knee sliders on... so now I can go with priiiiide.

/JELLY!

If only I had the balls to actually lean that little bit more!
Apparently I was within an inch on a ride-out on Tuesday ='[
Maybe I should try sticking my knee out more? xP

Reeder
07-05-11, 12:20 AM
Maybe? lol.
All I know is that I felt SO low to the ground, but I'm riding a naked which has slightly lower pegs than the faired and I had my toe sticking off the peg quite and bit and neither touched down, only my knee, so I must have more lean angle left!

Ahh right, hopefully i'll get it done when I get out on my own!
I've picked up my permanent pillion again so I seem to be going everywhere with her =3

i get over the edge on my tire before i can get me knee down .... i think mines a bike set up issue though, running to high off the floor (my seat hight is very high)

Same here, high seat height + short legs, but to get you're knee down you really have to hang off a lot more than you think, not done it on the sprint, YET.

Just got my left down twice :D and my right again, all in country roads rather than the roundabout I tackled yesterday!

Well first of all I needed my **** twice as far off the seat I was originally doing, put more weight on my knee resting against the tank so it wad easier to turn the bike. Toes right on the end of the peg and my heel against the heel plate so that it stuck my leg out at an angle and then instead of pushing my knee really far out I tried to push it really far down. Scared the **** out of me when I first did it last night! Also hung my head really far off too

Nothing worth mentioning really... I felt contact for literally 0.2 seconds =/ Smallest mark ever haha.

Need to find myself a smaller roundabout than the one I was trying though as I was going around at about 40-50 as it's located on a 60 road =P
Perfectly round and smooth though!

Bit more practice and i'll have that beast scraping away!

EDIT: I also only went around it once as I felt like a derp going round and around =P

That does sound like suicide. I did it at half 11 at night and pulled off when cars came along so I didnt risk them either pulling out on me or myself crashing into them!

Lovely and smooth just requires quite a bit of speed!

Sorry :D

I loled :D

Knee down is fairly easy, just need to be confident i guess, Hang off till your ass is well off the seat eg your thigh is where you ass should be, then look around your screen as if looking around a door, that puts your whole body off the side of the bike and not just your rear end, then hit a courner you know and poke your leg out, easy as that :)

Saying this i have almost no left knee slider left and my right is barely touched, just have an issue with going right haha

hongman
09-05-11, 07:29 AM
Complete opposite for me - left is far "harder" for me.

ANother tip which really helped was to try drop your shoulder to the floor. The act of doing this lowers everything body wise.

The most important thing though is self preservation, not worth coming off to get yer knee down...

AndyBrad

I too managed my first knee down yesterday. First time I've worn leathers with sliders so quite pleased :D. Even more pleased because I feel far less confident hanging off fror right handers than I do for left, but it was right knee down on a massive oval roundabout. Definitely need to learn to relax a bit though, I could feel my upper body tense up when I was looking around the screen. Might be better on decent rubber too rather than completely squared off past the wear marker dunlops!!

Just to show that you can be fast without getting your knee down, here is a pic of one of my son's mates (20). He won the Triumph triple challenge a couple of years back by 60 points, so no slouch. He uses his knee on left handers, but has this approach on right handers.....Very strange :)

Thanks L3nny, Your not left handed are you? Usually people prefer a left hander or a right hander depending more often than not on the opposite side to the side you write with.

Of course that could be a load of tosh but thought Id ask anyway?

L3nny
20-05-11, 10:33 AM
No I am right handed. I managed to get my left knee down a few times on the left hand harpin at Silverstone but I don't feel as comfortable hanging off that side as I do going round a right hander. I am pretty sure it's because all my knee down practice is done on roundabouts.

Bigmitch
20-05-11, 10:54 AM
Ah well that blew my theory out the water! I prefer left handers always feel more comfortable on that side of the bike, sadly we dont have any big roundabouts here on the IOM lol.

Happy Days.

Mr Speirs
20-05-11, 11:16 AM
I prefer left handers.
I have always put it down to having road to run wide onto whereas is right handers gives you the curb.
There are other theoretical reasons too like the bodies natural instinct to present the right hand side of the body to danger. This is because it puts your heart further from danger.
Thats why you generally injure the right hand side of your body more often than the left.

Wideboy
20-05-11, 11:52 AM
Im right handed but i prefer the left lean. My right slider is half gone but my left is only about a quarter. It's just road riding there's more right handers than left unless you live in Wales

G
20-05-11, 11:56 AM
I don't have a preference when it comes to leaning. I struggle to get my left knee down because my left knee and ankle are buggered and I don't trust putting much weight on that side.

Tips of my toes on a thin point (pegs) and bending my knee, then putting weight on it is exactly what enduces singificant pain lol... which can be awkwards for obvious reasons :D

Im trying atm. Im hanging right off the bike so much. The tyres are about 8mm from the edge. Im 6 foot and have long legs. Its a standard 99 sv naked. I just cant do it. I think im to cramped and my knees are two high. Will rear sets make a difference? Help!!!! What do i need to doo.....
Its all about technique. It took me ages to get mine down on the road. I doubt rear sets will make a difference. Stick the bike on it's side stand and work on sliding your bum off the seat & sticking your knee out.
Most people tend to rotate on the seat (I know I did), dont, just slide sideways & dont tense your arms.

Plus push your knee down rather than out.

Do taller riders really have a harder time vs shorter riders?

taller is much easier, i go out riding with a guy who is quite tall 6'3 ish, and he can get his knee down by barley leaning off the bike as his knees stick out so far/
