View Full Version : Giving Up The Internet

After finding the internet a great source of procrastination over the last few months, i have been contemplating giving it up at home.

Only going to friends houses, cafes, restaurants, libraries etc in order to use wi-fi occasionally to check emails and what not. I can concentrate on more meaningful, constructive things at home without fannying about on Youtube, StumbleUpon, Facebook, news/sports sites and blogs.

Far better to get out of the house too, see the daylight in all it's glory, meet more people etc

So how unobtainable is my utopian dream? How internet orientated are you? Am i the only one that succumbs to the internet every time i try and settle down to something? Thoughts?

Got to say this is rather extreme, bit of self discipline would be a solution.
I use to be on my computer constantly playing online games and now dont play any.

:) good luck whichever you decide dude!

Completely unrelated ofcourse ;) but reminded me of this news story

Danger is with the dark nights and bad weather coming to vegetate infront of the telly/computer, so I switch to my winter hobbies round about this time. Bit of indoor 5 a side, squash, indoor climbing. Good exercise and gets you out the house :)

You should have taken the blue pill and stayed blissfully unaware Binky.

I gave up the internet for 25 days, it's quite easy when you don't have facility's of internet.

Doesn't that give you a hard winky for a few hours?

Self discipline is bloody hard for things involving concentration, for me anyway. I am crap at sticking to something for a long time unless my job or livelihood or something else really important is at stake.

Just thought i'd start a good ol' debate.

Self discipline is needed, not cold turkey. Mrs Metal is always surprised when we go away somewhere for the weekend and all I have is my phone, especially when we have a friend who brings more gadgets and stuff than clothing!

You can live without it, same as booze and everything else (lovely boooooze). The other day, my eyes were strained from work (starting at set of screens all day) so I took the evening off internet and games. It was odd at first but then I had a long hot bath, read a bit and listened to some music. Twas a pleasant change.

Well, that was another full day for you, Binkmeister.
Can you give us an end date & we can stop parting about? ;)

I don't think you need to get rid of the internet all together, just like fat people don't give up food all together. You just need to learn to 'put down, the fork'

We "give it up" whenever we go abroad on holiday 'cos we're too tight to pay the extra! Or at least, we did. This year most of the hotels had free wifi so we took the laptop with us. Just to check emails etc.

At home, I probably only spend half an hour or so here seeing what you guys are all up to of an evening (or more if Lozzo's said something REALLY controversial) and maybe a few minutes looking for kit but that's about it. I could give up any time I want. Honest. No, really I could.....(sounds of straitjacket going on and laptop being prised from fingers.......)

I share your feelings. I detuned my tv and quit paying the tv licence last year because I felt I spent too much time watching the box. However I seem to have replaced this with the internet. Being a shift worked, sometimes I can get up during the week on my days off, and just spend the whole morning refreshing pages such as this, hoping that something has changed.
I have internet access on my mobile and at work, so I too keep thinking maybe I should quit my broadband connection at home to push myself to be more productive. We'll see.

so, in order to initiate this disconnection from the web you thought you would start an internet based discussion about it?? :-)

Nowt wrong with using the internet, its what you use it for that can make you brain dead. Take up reading.

Looking at the internet is reading

I dont read books tbh, find it hard to hold my concentration long enough, all i see is words after a bit and dont absorb what im reading, i read loads of bike and photography mags though.

The benefit of a book though is that it isnt full of stuff to distract you from the main theme. Internet pages lure you off down some unintended path very easily.

Noooooo! Never!

What you could do Binky, is stick your broadband router on a timer switch, attach it to the wall, then glue a wooden box round the whole lot. That way you can get internet between say 8pm and 10pm, and if you want it any other time you have to smash the box off the wall, and probably re-plaster and re-decorate afterwards.

Or equally effective, if I made it a lockable box, and gave the key to my wife, you'd see way less posts from me on here.

And when his router overheats and dies because of no ventilation, he's got no choice but to give up intarwebbing!

Am I the only one who sees the irony of using an internet forum to discuss giving up the internet:smt045

No can't give it up, not while I'm at work anyway.

Giving up entirely makes finding jobs, and indeed doing your job a damn site harder.

Cut back though and lay off the forums and news website completely, makes you feel a lot better and enjoy life more not having to read about other people's drama.

I didn't say i'd done it yet. Still very much using the internet in my own home still. :)

I like the idea of having to get out of the house to briefly use the internet for functional things. Could couple it with a library visit, shopping or visiting a friend/family. It could fuel a productive side of life having internet...
