Sooo shiney new xbox + kinect has been set up for a few days and my son is loving it :)
Time for daddy to get something out of it too now (was never the plan honest). As much as small baby tiger cubs are cute, they dont really do it for me in terms of gaming!
Background: Final Fantasy nut. Not into FPS/Platform and suchlike. FInd some "Action RPG's" ok...but at heart I really prefer the random encounter type. Final Fantasy, Lufia, Breath of Fire, etc...
Best games I have played are all RPG's and/or Strategy games. Not been into games for a few years now, so I have no idea what is out. Lots of demo's to download and try, but they all look awesome and I cant afford to buy them all to try! Demo's lack somewhat most of the time.
Tried Fable 3 demo, was "ok", but nothing that really glued me the way FF series does most of the time.
Sooo, whilst I wait for FF XIII-2 to come out (which I'll play on PS3 probably), can anyone recommend any RPG's?
Preferably NOT online or MMO based, as I tend to get shamefully addicted to them (like FFXI)
Help me!
Fallout 3 and fallout new Vegas are good.

You know FF13 is on 360 right? Also take a look at Eternal Sonata, pretty old game and can be picked up really cheaply.
Not random encounter stuff but the best RPG IMO for 360 has to be Mass Effect 1 and 2. Both awesome games with well over 40 or 50 hours of gameplay each.

I heard FF13-2 was going to be released on both consoles, but Xbox lacking BluRay will probably mean multiple discs? Not important anyhow.
Off to google these suggestions :D

Fable 2 is pretty good- as long as you observe the following-
Do lots of side quests, as the main story is very short
It's quite (nay- very) easy
Some of the quests are a bit repetetive
That aside, it's gorgeous- the 'world' is really well realised
It's often quite funny as well, with lots of scope for entertainment and extended play (once the story is finished)
Game of the year edition should be knocking around at a good price

Buy Battlefield BC 3, theres a good chance it'll change your mind on FPS

Buy call of duty lol
How about rage or gears of war 3 all shoot them ups but bit story line and scifi.
But u cant beat final fantasy :)
All the rpg's mentioned above are good :)

Oblivion. If that sorta thing takes your fancy. I know the whole swords and shields, magic and demons thing sounds a little childish/nerdy/dungeons and dragons/that sort of stereotype. But its a very well done game. Kept me entertained for absolute hours. Looking forward to Skyrim which is the next installment they're doing.
Or if you fancy a really cool concept that will get you thinking, try the Portal games. Although get "The Orange Box" and do Portal 1 before starting Portal 2. The Half Life series on the Orange Box is another fantastic set of games. First Person Shooter but its more than just enter a room and shoot all bad guys that move with lots of explosions and noise.
The Splinter Cell games are pretty awesome too. I would recommend starting from the beginning with the original Xbox ones though. Great games. Kinda preferred the originals where you are a secret agent sneaking about Russian Compounds or something working for an organisation. The ones on the 360 (Double Agent and Conviction) are starting to come away from the secret agent working for an organisation thing. Still all very good games though.

Being an rpg fan the best place to be was the playstation 2 as this was the rpg king imho and is why i still use mine for rpg fun as there are still games out there i haven't managed to find yet grr but my rare collection is still growing. Anyway back to your op.
Xbox is full of fps so there aren't many decent rpg's out there a few worth a try are:
Star ocean The Last Hope
Infinite Undiscovery
Magna Carta 2
Lost Odyssey
Tales of Vesperia
Give them a google and see if its what you're looking for or try and download a demo off xbox live. If you happen across any more good old school style titles for the 360 give me a nod please.

I find the whole COD franchise a bit meh, I much prefer Battlefield, Bad Company 2 being the best, and i will be getting Battlefield 3.
As for RPG's I would recommend Mass effect 2 it is a game where your choices determine the outcome of the game and there is numerous endings, again there is a ME3 coming out in March which is on my list.
Deus Ex : Human Revolution is very very good so far not long been out and i am not that far thru it but so far I am impressed.
I dunno if simulations are your thing but I had Ace Combat : Assault Horizon delivered on Tuesday even tho its official release date is not until tomorrow, all i can say is WOW it is amazing so realistic, and the dogfight mode is breathtaking makes you really feel like you part of the action. It is a flight sim obviously with fast jets, helicopters and all that even get to be a door gunner in one of the missions.
Mafia 2 is a good game will be in the Xbox classics collection but again very good game I have just completed it, is exactly what it says it is you start out as a small time criminal and work your way up thru the Mafia until you a 'made man' has free roam and you can steal cars etc.
Just what I think!
Do not buy any of the Fallout series, they'll sap your life away for weeks and months!

I had Fallout New Vegas, sold it almost immediately, it is so long and quite frankly boring.
Fall out can get a little bit boring at times, but it's huggggggge. I didn't play new vegas as much as fall out 3.

Oblivion I is still a great game. Graphics a bit ropey but brilliantly put together. It will eat 100 bhours of your life very easily though
Also bored of COD, liking Gears of War 3 though.
Kinnect - gimmick or way forward?

Depends on whether you just want to shoot things and play sports games or whether you would like some variety...
In this case, for RPGs and specifically JRPGs, the PS3 wins.

I agree each to their own i personally prefer Xbox as do most ppl I know but PS3 has its place. Xbox is better for kids especially with the Kinect which I think is the way forward. Am interested to see how that is going to work on Forza 4 when it come to driving.

Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is out in a month. I really is going to be the best fantacy style RPG in the last decade.
Recommended.
Also, about Forza + Kinect: Suprisingly fun. The game automatically speeds up/slows down for you, leaving you to steer, and its a blast! Also has a split screen mode. Autovista is nifty too.

Another +1 for Oblivion, get the game of the year edition.
And Skyrim is going to be immense!
Not sure if I noticed anyone mention Mass Effect (1 and 2), but they're amazing games also.

Wow, thanks for the replies. I'm going to spend some time googling to see what seems to fit.
At the moment Oblivion looks like a firm contender to try out first!
I love the whole magic/swords/fantasy genre, much more so than the army/nuclear/spy type thing.
I also do have a PS3 so if anyone has some PS3-only games in mind, drop me a line ;)
What does GOTY include that the normal edition doesn't?
And is it just me, or are the PS3 graphics just that bit better?:smt077
JPRG's all the way though. Can't beat em.

Wait another month for Skyrim, its the next installment in the same series as Oblivion. There's no story relation, so no need to buy both games. Oblivion is great, but it's got alot of glitches, wait until 11/11/2011 when Skyrim comes out.

ME3's comming out in March of next year. It's gonna be LIVE compatable. Looking foward to it.

11/11 eh? Well my birthday happens to be on the 8/11 so ;) :D
Might get Oblivion anyway to see if I do end up liking it. Only a tenner on the bay, one of my mates might even have a copy I can borrow.
Brainwave.
Might sign up for a rental service (I think LoveFilm or similar do free one month trials), grab loads of games and just try them all!

Oblivion's old enough to get it at any local game shop for less then 8p (pretty sure that means pounds....) and that's with all the DLC (Game of the Year edition)

@Hong: If you want a JRPG, Tales of Vesperia or Eternal Sonata are both worth checking out.
Eternal Sonata is pretty much a 'random battles' RPG at heart except you can see the enemies and try to run around them, if you want to. The battle system itself is very cool too, everything has light and dark powers, the battles are turn-based with each participant getting a 'turn' to run around in real time for about ten seconds. You can chain attacks (and eventually chain your entire party's attacks together), keep a stock of items to use on the fly... good stuff. It's beautiful to look at too. There's a demo you can try, but you can probably find the full game for about £5 these days.
hongman
13-10-11, 04:15 PM
I'll be honest I looked at Eternal Sonata website but it didnt "sell" to me. However it has been mentioned a few times so at least worth downloading the demo to try.
Only driving game I truly enjoyed was NFS series. Mostly becuase I liked to chav up my Supra and then proceed to smash it up.
metalangel
13-10-11, 04:34 PM
Eternal Sonata is very weird... it's inspired by Chopin and the game world is allegedly Chopin's fevered dreams as he dies in Paris. Everything is named after music stuff, though you can skip the documentary bits about him if you just want to beat on more monsters. It's possibly the most bright and colourful and happy thing you'll ever play on your 360.
The battle system takes a bit of getting used to and the features unlock slowly, but when you've finally got the full battle system the game becomes a thing of beauty: as you build up a big combo with one character then with your final hit activate their special attack, and then every other character who is within striking distance of an enemy can then unleash one of their specials, and if you hit the button when prompted you can keep the chains going until all of your party members have done both of your specials, and absolutely battered your foes. The pyrotechnics are amazing, and it's so satisfying to chain together all the attacks and teach an annoying foe a proper lesson.
Try the demo, see what you think. The fighting is a bit button mashy but that was part of the fun.
Cross your fingers for them to release an HD port of Skies of Arcadia onto the 360... or if you've got a Wii, you might be able to find the Gamecube version. Best JRPG ever IMHO.

What do you reckon to the kinect Hong? I remember reading a thread you started about the distance needed to make the thing work. Considering getting one one my son for Christmas but concerned about the distance needed as we don't have a lot of room where our xbox is.

Now we have rearranged the furniture a bit, its bloody fantastic. Tracks extremely well even when my daughter is running around in front of it lol.
We had 6ft from sensor (mounted on top of TV) to front of sofa.
It worked like this but kept dropping out and/or tracking erratically. I was starting to get a bit disappointed at this stage.
Shifted the sofa, recalibrated, and now standing in the optimum area (not measured but I imagine it's very close the the recommended 8ft) it's perfect.
The range is better as well, whilst playing my son gets sometimes probably 4 feet from the TV (over energetic...) and moves back without any glitches in play.
The Nyko Zoom thing I bought does indeed work at reducing range required BUT it made my Kinect unable to detect the floor, so avatars looked like they were kneeling down all the time...
Oh, and you can Fine-Tune using a rectangle piece of card to hold up to the kinect at different ranges. Not required but really worth it.

The only bad thing about BF2 is all the crap you have to download just to play online. It's all free if you have some online pass thing....But no matter what you have to download about 2 gigs of stuff just to play. And the single player is a waste of time.
Aside form that, the online play is a blast

2GB seems a bit excessive, but not really bothered. 50Mb line and lobbed my own 250GB hard drive the day I got it ;)
