I'd like to do more stuff myself but don't feel that comfortable on my own. I have a few advisories to sort out before the trip but I am not sure I'd feel OK sorting it myself :/

Well I know people post on here but having someone around to show me would be good! I know my chain is a bit slack so need to sort that but the actual advisories are:
- tyres - but I guess garage will have to take care of that
- rear master cylinder rubber needed
- rear disc low

I think that's it, but that was given to me back in January so not sure if there's anything else to worry about since then?

-Ralph-
09-03-12, 07:39 PM
I'm not a mechanic, but rear pads and disks (you might as well do the pads if you're doing the disk) and the chain I can definitely help you with. It would need to be in April when all my tools, paddock stands, sundries, etc are unpacked in my new garage.

Rear master cylinder I've never messed with other than changing the fluid, and can't claim to know exactly what to do there, but I have the SV workshop manual and I can't imagine it would be difficult. I will look at the manual and see if I think it's something I'd be prepared to attempt with you.

I work in an office and my area of expertise is IT, but my experience of doing things myself is that there is nothing difficult about most of the 'trades', once you have taken the leap and done it for yourself, you wonder why you worried about attempting it.

F4LL3N
09-03-12, 08:15 PM
Yeah I worked in IT too before I went to Uni to do music.

If you can help me out that would be great! I just need to know where to get the parts from and what exactly i need to get?

Appreciate the help =)

What age is your bike?

Dave20046
09-03-12, 08:38 PM
echo ralph's sentiments, you can do most things once you see past initial fear (I'm still scared of electrics and still **** with them)

Mastercylinder will be pee easy if it's anything like the front, you'll most likely need circlip pliers to get into it then strip it renew the bits and pop them back as they came out. Get a manual should be dead easy.
Although that's assuming I read what you wrote right, I wouldn't have thought that was something that would leap out at an MOT tester and is immediately diagnosable unless it's really bad or leaking or something.

-Ralph-
09-03-12, 08:40 PM
I don't THINK the age matters as far as brakes are concerned, a pointy is a pointy. If that's correct you need

http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/suzuki/sv_650_k6/06/picture/disc_rear_ebc/

Would be my preferred choice, but

http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/suzuki/sv_650_k6/06/picture/disc_rear_pattern/ or
http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/suzuki/sv_650_k6/06/picture/disc_rear_wavy/

would do

You'd need 5 of these

http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/suzuki/sv_650_k6/06/picture/mounting_bolt_-_rear_disc_-_individual/

and these

http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/suzuki/sv_650_k6/06/picture/pads_rear_ebc_standard_gg_type/

If we are going to attempt the brake cylinder rubber, I suspect we'll need this

http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/suzuki/sv_650_k6/06/picture/dot_4_hydraulic_fluid_250_ml_-_rock_oil/

You also need sundries such as copper slip, but I have all those and I'm not going to begrudge you a wee squeeze of copper slip!

Id be happy to come over too guys and lend a hand, we can blast the lot out in no time I'm sure.

Is it the rubber boot around the master cylinder? If it was the actual master cylinder leaking wouldn't that be a fail?

-Ralph-
09-03-12, 09:05 PM
If it was the actual master cylinder leaking wouldn't that be a fail?

Almost certainly would be a fail. If it's an advisory, it's not going to stop him going to France, so we could do the chain adjustment and brakes, and whilst the wheels are off take them in the car for new tyres, and look at the rear master cylinder and see what we think.

Specialone
09-03-12, 09:11 PM
I've rebuilt car master cylinders before, never done a bike one though.

I suspect they may be advising on the rubber boot rather than the actual seals in the master cylinder.

Well if ralphs links are the stuff you need order them as soon you can so you have the bits ready, obviously don't order the bits for stuff you're gonna do after France.

Once you have the bits, let us know and once ralph is free we can sort something out, we can use his shiny new garage if he don't mind :)

F4LL3N
11-03-12, 05:57 PM
Are we sure these parts are suitable for the 2008? Btw I have no idea if mine is ABS or not... I don't think it is?

-Ralph-
11-03-12, 06:02 PM
Only you can tell us that one I'm afraid mate, we've never seen your bike. Does your registration document or manual mention anything along the likes of 'SK8'?

-Ralph-
11-03-12, 06:04 PM
I think ABS came along in 2010, and I don't know if the brake discs or pads changed or not. Phil - yours was a 2009, did you have ABS? What was your model denomination?

I've just looked at the front wheel and doesn't look there it has ABS - although I would guess that wouldn't make too much of a difference. So as long as the 2006 bits and bobs are OK on the 08 I will get ordering. It is a 650 S so I'm guessing SK8.

Specialone
11-03-12, 06:12 PM
Mine was a 09 K7, mine defo didn't have abs, it's easy to tell gaz, the inner parts of the disc will have loads of slots.

I don't think yours will have abs being a 08 tbh.

F4LL3N
11-03-12, 06:18 PM
Yeah it doesn't I looked for the slots. Main question is - will the 06 parts Ralph has linked me too be ok?

-Ralph-
11-03-12, 06:35 PM
Those parts will definitely be OK on an SK7 or an SK8.

F4LL3N

-Ralph-

Your sure yours is an SK7 or SK8 then? ;-)

LOL, don't worry, on a 2008 bike I'm sure the parts are going to be compatible.

Will let you know when we can do it. Are you coming on the 7th April rideout?

F4LL3N

Guys,

Did anyone source a good deal on short term breakdown cover? My present company want silly money to add to mine

Specialone
14-03-12, 04:19 PM
Right, since seeing this post, ive investigated my own cover, as always swinton have been slightly dishonest with this.

While searching through my documents, i couldnt find anything that mentioned euro cover included, i specifically asked this question when i took it out last year and they gave me all the crap it includes, well it doesnt.

Ive just called them to clarify a few things, i have personal breakdown insurance, any vehicle im driving is covered.
But, if i want euro cover, i have to upgrade, which is £11.99 a month as opposed to £8.99 a month.

Another but, the guy said because its a rolling thing now, i can ring up on the 20th april (payments are on the 26th of every month) and tell them i want to upgrade as im going to europe, they will take the extra £3 that month and if i call them when i get back before the 26th of the following month, i can downgrade it again to the standard UK for £8.99.

Hope this makes sense :)

Now for all you lovely people, i have some better news, while insuring my drz the other day, bikesure offered me a breakdown policy for £49 if i took it out with the bike insurance, or £59 without.

This defo included 30 days euro cover and the recovery cost of getting the bike back to the UK in the event of a garage not being able to fix it, i specifically got her to check this with her powers that be.

After normandy im thinking of switching to this tbh.

Just bought mine from Mondial for £22.71 from here

http://www.europeanbreakdowncover.com

I found it for £21 with AXA, but I didn't like some of the terms and conditions, and though it covered repatriation it particularly stated that they would choose what happened if you were due to go home before the bike was fixed (i.e. if it was cheaper to pay your travel to go back and get it, than to recover it home, which it almost certainly would be, you're stuffed).

With Mondial they clearly set out that if your vehicle couldn't be repaired before you return home, they will repatriate it, i.e. you will never be asked to leave your bike in France.

Is that for one trip?

Bloody hell, for another £30 you can have a years breakdown covering euro and the uk, seems a lot of money to me ?

-Ralph-

Not if your only going to do two trips on the bike in the year, and you already have 5 years European Breakdown cover from Toyota to cover the car.

I pass both mate, what do you need?

I got my bearings sent to redcar motorcycles by Suzuki then posted to me this was over a week ago and I've only just got them today thanks to the royal mail withholding them from me as they're inefficient retards, waited in for it last Saturday and they just put a card through and ran off then couldn't find it during the week (after half hour queue) infuriating. Anyway its having its valves done late this week so needs putting back together but I need some new spacers ... if it's convenient a courier service would be much appreciated ... if not i may try get them shipped to work but that might actually be worse!

Hope that makes sense-on phone
