Following on from Bills thread...
Adele covered one of my all time favourite songs and it was certainly a catalyst in her career. She is one in a very very long line of people to cover this particular song and both hers and Garth Brooks' versions are brilliant, but I don't think either are a patch on the man himself.
He is a prolific songwriter but this could easily be one of his best and the way he sings it gets me to the core every time I hear it.

So...what songs do you love more by the writer/original recording artist than by the people that have covered it in later years?
Forgive me if you're not a Dylan fan...but I am and I LOVE his voice :-)

American Pie = Don Maclean, say no more.
Metallica - Fade to Black. Not heard any cover that comes near to touching the original recording.

Pink Cadillac by Springsteen
I would actually say I tend to prefer the originals than most covers I've heard.

It's my life - Talk Talk
No Doubt covered it and didn't do a bad job, but you can't beat the original.

+1
Plus 'Blinded by the light' Manfred mans version was good, but not a patch on the original

+1, with the exception of one Springsteen track which he gave to Patti Smith to record, as he said he wasn't ready to sing such a song at the time he wrote it, which was 'Because the night' both equal in my books, Bruces version is better live

Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd.
Way better than those gender-confused hairdressers.
