like an idiot i have purchased a 6 wire rectifier regulator, i have the three stator wires my red and black output but then i also have a orange/black cable. Does anyone know what this sixth cable is for or if i can fit this r/r to my curvy sv?

From the picture it looks a smaller gauge wire than the rest?
Without being able to see a dr650 wiring diagram I can't comment, but chances are it'll be a feed for a monitor or aux circuit, and not needed in your case.
Do you have a manual for the bike it came from?

You are correct, the extra wire is smaller than the others, i cannot find a manual and i think some models of this bike actually use a 5 wire. Trust me to end up with this. I thought there were only 5 and 7 wires.

do not plug it in!!!! it will fry everything as that orange wire goes up into the clocks/ that mess behind the headlight on the oz and us model....never quiet worked out what it did even after studying a wiring diagram for hours.
i believe but dont quote me on this its the same as the dr350 ill check tomorrow for you on wire colours, and if so i bought one from this lot http://www.brooksbarn.co.uk/DR350-REGULATOR-RECTIFIER-DR250-28-AMP-5-wire_ATE4W.aspx

has worked a treat and seems more solid better cooling less heat given off anyways ect.

also pop over here good bunch. http://www.maximum-suzuki.com/forums/index.php
lots of info and tips in the archive.

[edit]
also for some reason with that orange not plugged in it likes to throw out lots and lots and lots of ac...things go bang...quickly not that i would know ofc:smt087

Thanks mate, i think I wont risk putting that anywhere near my bike, as for those who see my thread in essex section its taken enough of a beating already

i dont think they can take enough of a beating...they just keep on going.

also if you look on that website they have 2 listed under dr650 just need to find the right one.

Looking at the circuit diagram of a 94/95 DR650, O/B (does your orange wire have a tracer colour in it, same as the black has a white?), is connected to the battery +ve through the ignition switch. That would make it a monitor/feedback loop for the regulator, so leaving it open circuit would make odd things happen.

It does indeed have a black tracer line though it, would it not be possible to connect that wire with the red on the positive terminal or would that be different from the live at the ignition( apart from fact ignition isnt constantly live?

It may be that the O/B draws some current, which is why it is not left connected to the red which goes straight to the battery.

If I were going to try this device in my bike, first I'd connect the red and black up to a power supply, connect the O/B to positive via a ammeter, vary the voltage from 11 - 14 and see what readings I get to confirm my suspicions. If all looked good I'd connect just the stator and -ve up on the bike, connect the O/B to battery +ve, run the bike and check what voltage is on the red output using a voltmeter on AC over DC range, before connecting up fully.
I appreciate you probably cant do the above, so proceed with caution at your own risk, might be worth BBadger commenting on exactly what his experience was.

i never tried connecting the o/b to the +ve on the battery as it just didnt look right for the 350 wiring diagram.

but i would say test the output from the reg without anything plugged in ( just altanator to reg ) and check what ac and dc are coming from the 3 pronged plug.

the try with the o/b connected to the battery and test again.

if all seems good go for a full connection.

at this point keep a close eye on your dash lights and headlight as if there is a big surge these will tell you flickering and going super bright before going bang.

also a 2nd pair of hands and eyes when doing this all makes life 10 times easier.
good luck.

thanks for your advice guys, with the possibility of ac voltage or current being drawn from o/b i feel its not worth the hassle and will relist the product on ebay and purchase another 5 wire as i know where i stand with them :)

The orange wire is probably a sense wire normally connected at the furthest point in the system, ie headlights etc the regulator can then compensate for voltage drop or something like that.
Ask squid as he mentioned something about this a while back.

had a better look at the wiring diagram and TSM is right its up behind the clocks but it actually doesnt say where it should go to.
This is where the dr sucks. no earth to frame all to the motor and the fact that the loom is a massive loop rather than separate wires for different jobs!
