It's local election day - these people probably have more influence on your day to day life and services than the MPs.

No matter who you vote for make sure you turn up!

I do vote, and I think about why I vote. But, while we are on the subject I'll vent a little.

What really annoys me is the sheer effort and air time devoted to slagging off the opposition. I want to know what each candidates plans are, what experience they have, justification for their planned approach etc.

Instead of relevant information I get a ton of leaflets telling me how cr@p somebody else is.

If you don't like any of the candidates then go and put a big cross through all of them.... They record the number of spoiled ballots - To me thats better than the appathy that comes across with a 30% turn out.

I went in at 8 when the polls had been open an hour and I was only the third person to vote.

I never thought of doing that. at least it shows your disgust, in a family fortunes manner:rolleyes:
Suppose its better than voting UKIP just for the sake of not voting for the usual garbage!

Agree entirely Tommy.

If all the people who said "it doesnt matter because so and so will never get voted in anyway" actually turned up to vote, they might just stand a chance.

And like you say, if they dislike the candidates cross all the boxes.

How does it work with the new in order of preference numbers system, presumably a cross anywhere is a spoiled paper now?

I shall toddle along later.

I think so, but they might assume that you just didn't understand how the ballot paper works and got confused. I suggest that, to remove all doubt, you spoil your paper by writing **** against each candidates name. :)

I think it was on here last week someone suggested collecting all those leaflets up and then popping them into one of those stamped addressed envelopes that come with the other junk you get through your postbox, and post it on!

AV didn't get it. It's still cross one candidate down here.

Even so, I was thinking more like one huge cross over the centre of the ballot or even words to the effect of 'You're all Cr@p'

The sentiment won't get recorded but the spoiled paper will, and you might give the counters a bit of a laugh.

Just for the record I didn't spoil my ballot.

I always vote but its a real struggle to decide who i want.

I'd thought about just putting 0 next to all the candidates.

Probably end up voting for the labour councillor as she has been brilliant in the last year she fought off the Scottish Office plans to grant planning for a new housing estate on green belt land right next to our house.
There's already 3 new estates in Kilsyth with about 70% of the houses empty cause no one can afford them. Why do we need more?

There are people like you who have a jolly good reason for voting for a particular local candidate, in your case Labour.
On the flip side, I have so many leaflets for the Lib Dems through my door its unbelievable. They constantly remind me, that they have turned a football field behind my house into 'affordable housing', which nobody wanted, they pushed and pushed and pushed to get that to look like they did us a favour, they buttered us up by saying they'd put a kids play area in to the field over the road, where all the streets kids play in the summer.....then changed their minds!
Just like the derelict youth club back into use.....that nobody uses, at a cost to our superb non profit nursery and multi-use building, which I sat on the committee for, and fought against the Lib Dems and their meddling.

I hate voting....because every single bunch of lying cheating gits feck up. The only candidates I used to vote for regularly was our old Deputy Mayor who was independant, he sat with us and fought the Lib Dems and their meddling, worked tirelessly against ASBO behaviour, even used to come down and paint anti vandal grease on the nursery back fences......sadly hes now retired :( He did it because he cared about our local community, not to score points against the others, or look good like all the idiots that post garbage and knock on my door!

If you feel like that then you should spoil a ballot paper - its the best way to show your discontent with all parties.

Is my mind too warped? My idea of 'spoiling' a ballot paper would make it very unpleasant indeed, may even spoil a couple of the ones next to it

I have been to vote, one of the councillors had the cheek to ask for my vote at the door on the way into the polling station, and after a rather stressful morning I'm afraid he got told where exactly he could stick his request for my vote.

My nails might be painted blue but that doesnt mean I want to vote for you. Pillock.

Regarding the Mayoral election, despite being working class I just couldn't bring myself to vote for Red Ken. Can't stand the guy.

I was there at 7.00am, myself with two proxies for wife/daughter who are on holiday. Smallest list ever just two candidates, one blue, one red.

Didn't need to show any voting card as official was my next door neighbour. So the Wilkies were the first 3 numbers on the list.

Thinking about that the two votes before me could well have been the two people sitting officiating (not sure of any regs about whether they can vote where they are being all official).

No votee, no bitchee about the candidate you end up with!

Jambo

Since us here in the sticks don't get a votee, do we still get to bitchee about itee?

Incidentally, there is no election in spelthorne this year. There is also the fact that this is a true blue area and whatever I vote feels like it doesn't make a difference, the tories always win. But that is another subject, go vote!

First in line this morning.

Am i right in saying those working on the polling stations do so without pay/volunteers?

Messie
03-05-12, 05:22 PM
Yes, those who work at the Polling stations are all volunteers, as are those who stay up all night in some places to take part in the count.

Those who stand outside the polling stations are not currently standing councillors, nor are they prospective candidates - the law prohibites this. They are people who are trying to take 'exit' polls, and they may or may not be a member of any political party.

Local council elections only take place every few years to re-elect a third of the sitting members in any local area ward (area). If there are two members for a ward then there may not be an election each time

Ad 'spoilt papers' are all logged, both in number and in content. They have no legitimacy as such but they make very interesting reading for researchers into voters opinions.

Finally, Jambo is so right - if you don't vote, you can't complain. In my opinion you lose you whinging rights if you don't first of all use your right to express an opinion enshrined in ancient law

I'm a pain in the ass. I'm away today and didn't apply for a postal vote. Oh well, if who I would vote for loses by one vote then its my fault. Let's say, its not Red Ken.

Thanks Messie ;) I was told otherwise at work today but knew I could depend on the intellect of the Org for an answer.

Couldn't agree more re the no votey, no whingy.
