AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH! :smt073
I go to some tucked away place in Scotland, spend most of my time wading through marshland with deer and badgers, then spend 3 days wild camping on an uninhabited island extracting seabirds from a net at night...come home and I have something wrong with my eyes, think it's just dry eyes 'cos of exposure to wind so don't go to the doctor for a week or two...then find out I have Conjunctivitus, I hate hate hate it. Done the antibiotics course and think I still have it, just want it to leave me alone!
Anyone had it, got tips for helping eradicate it? And anyone had it while having to use the bike, cos it's making me paranoid when helmet going on and off but nowt I can do about it :-( :smt009:cry::cry::cry::smt100
How do I know when it's gone, need my eyeliner back lol :smt120
Cheers all,
A dejected Missyburd, the world's crappest patient x

Only look at nice things until it goes away.
Sleek, sporty Italian cars and motorbikes, cute fluffy animals, Scott Schumanns fashion blog or the bronzed Adonis that is your husband/boyfriend. Your choice.

All through watery eyes, amazing how the slight distortion sheds a better light on things :p
I have used cooled down camomile tea and cotton wool to relieve the symptoms.

Saline Solution.
Salt water every time! Make a cup of it and hold your eyelids open then slowly tip it in.
you'll need to blink but thats sorta the magic behind it, it works for me without fail.

Only problem with Salt solution is that it dries the skin out, I have slight flaking under my eyelids. Managed to get to speak to a triage doctor just now and he says I shouldn't be infectious now and that I had Blepheritis combined with conjunctivitis. Nurse never told me I had that  or how to deal with it. Hot compresses a couple of times a day and general "eyelid hygiene". I've used a drop or two of tea tree oil (natural antiseptic) in warm water for the compresses, hopefully that should sort the remaining symptoms. Can use Vaseline to help keep the area moisturised.
Just glad I'm not infectious anymore. Hoping my helmet's clear of it!

Yup, salty water.
That second leak seems more concerned about the quality of the water as opposed to the salt content :smt023

My husband suffers the same thing, frequently- hot compresses with baby shampoo seem to keep it at bay.
optrex infected eye,
^this or ask your chemist for cheaper alternative with chloramphenicol in it

Yup, i was prescribed the Chloramphenicol ointment and drops (bought them over the counter though) so that cleared up. But still had a bit of redness, checked with doc and turns out i have that Blepharitis too. Joy. Can't say I noticed dodgy tasting phlegm lol!

Every time I use eye drops I can taste them in the back of my throat, what bits are connected, tear ducts?
andrewsmith

Tear ducts are connected to the back of the throat via the nasal cavity

Ooooo i know how you feel! Last time i had conjunctivitis i felt like i was going blind because keeping my eyes open was absolute agony.
Best thing to do is get some eye drops from the chemist they cost about £8 but they DO work. Keep them in the fridge and use them when instructed.
Also, keep washing your eyes with clean warm water, nothing else.
Hope you're better soon! :)

I have Blepharitis which is non curable eyelid disorder and chloramphenicol is one of the 2 things that helps which u can get over the counter , either that doctors recomennded baby shampoo mixed 1 part shampoo to 10 parts water make sure it's baby shampoo as it's like no more tears stuff, on a cotton bud and lift eyelid out and just a slight rub under each eyelid three times per day .
Try that m8

I was on chloramphenicol but I thought the drops only lasted five days. I've been having hot compresses twice a day in hot water with a couple of drops of tea tree oil which seems to be helping. I know it's non-curable (although apparently there are acute cases but I'm not holding out on that one). I think I can wear eyeliner as long as it wipes off easily....but to be honest, my eyes are still tearing up too much to wear it, easier not to bother
Annoying thing is not knowing if I have hay fever or not which would be contributing to the tearing.
Cheers for the info Spike. Does yours come and go then or do you always have it there in the background?

Aye, that's what I thought it be like. Got some baby oil now so will see how that helps. Tis just a case of finding what best agrees with me for keeping it happy...

Gah, had to ring the doctors yesterday morning, it flared up again. Actually got to see him this time (not the nurse who witholds information) and he's taken a swab from my eyelid and ended up giving me antibiotics to take for a month....and I now have to take care in direct sunlight lol as apparently I will burn more easily, I didn't think I could burn any easier! :smt101
EDIT just when we get a taste of summer at last and I supposedly can't sit out in it, I'm gutted :(

Hope that you feel better soon, it all sounds horribly painful and yet you still want to wear eye liner! You are way braver than me.
Heal soon, sorry that I cannot offer any advice, but I thought a virtual hug may be accepted.

Can you not just takesome Claritin/Piriton/Antihiustamine for a couple of days and see if it eases the tears?

Baby oil, vaseline, anything else other than what is prescribed, should be kept in the cupboard, in fact binned just the same as your eyeliner.
Part of the irritation is what you think is helping. It's extremely hard to not put stuff on, but these things seal in the infection, and pass it back between each eye to its hearts content with your fingers via the pot it came from. Just the same as makeup. They also contain fragrances that even babies get irritations from. This is most likely the reason for it not clearing up as it should have done a week ago.
Infections of the sensitive skin around your eyes is a very difficult cycle to break, especially when the patient is stubborn. Take antihistamine tablets every day, not just when you feel like it. The red of your skin is the build up of histamine, which usually is your bodies way of fighting, but can do the opposite when its gone into overload mode. It may not itch but the warning sign is obvious red skin. Antihistamines should be taken regimentally just like antibiotics, until you are in the clear.
Not that I know anything about sensitive skin, eyes and infections.

Blepharitis isn't The same as conjunctivitis but is very often mistaken for it. My husband suffers from flare ups of this and antibiotics were the first resort, then hot compresses and baby shampoo- he visited an ophthalmic specialist as the doc was just giving him various tablets etc, but I'd say it's definitely worth trying the antihistamine route as its also often got an allergy trigger.
It's a tedious thing to live with I hope it clears up for you. Also I'm reading you have just moved, has there been any concrete dust about where you are? This is a known eye irritant, or change of scene , or carpets?

Lou, I know you're trying to help with my best interests at heart but what you speak of is dealing with conjunctivitis which I haven't got any more. This Blepharitis is a disorder of the eyelid which may or may not have come about because of the conj. and it is not infectious. I'm not wearing any makeup and haven't tried to since I realised what it was I had. The DOCTOR (you know, that person who has a profession concerning ailments ;)) has told me I can use baby oil no probs to help the dryness, which is better now anyway.
I am taking the antihistamines but don't think they're helping much.

Thankyou! :-P

I have just moved but I had the eye bother when I came back from Scotland halfway through June. Took me a fortnight to go to the doctor as I thought I just had hay fever for a while. Heyho.
There is concrete dust in the garage but that's just been painted now so shouldn't contribute any more to the situation if it did at all.
It is just that, tedious. I make the crappest patient lol but I'm getting used to it now. Slowly...

Bearing in mind your last post said it had flared up again, and you had to take antibiotics for a month, with no suggestion as to what had flared up......and the fact your eyes looked no different Sunday as they did the week before......why do you think I said to see the doctor rather than call the doctor?
My intentions as your friend rather than internet buddies, means exactly that.
Be defensive if you wish, I'll feck off and not bother saying anything instead. Advice from faceless people is obviously better than someone who sees you often.

So why the need to spout off on here when you see me enough in person? There's no need to repeat yourself, you told me everything in your "throw away makeup post" before a few times silly, you didn't need to say it again. And I had told you I had Blepharitis which wasn't infectious but you kept insisting it was. And I think you'll find it's you who is the defensive one with your "Advice from faceless people is obviously better than someone who sees you often", you should know better on an internet forum.
Hug hug, when you round for a brew then ;)

Ladies, please collect your toys from the corner ;)
I hope this all starts clearing up for you Maria. Out of curiosity did you ask the Doc re his opinion on wearing a helmet with conjunctivitis and the likelihood of re-infection from it? I can be quite prone to it so was interested in that...

Haha I don't own any toys MBK ;)
And yes I did ask about helmets. Doc didn't seem to think it would be an issue, he seemed to think the spread of infection would have to be very close eye-to-eye contact, and unlikely for the bacteriums to "jump" back onto me....lol. But I only asked him about this when my conj. had cleared up, conj. being more infectious it's probs more of an issue.
Also, while riding, tears were rolling down my face and either being absorbed into my neck tube or the cheek patches in the lid...that bothered me too...I don't think the doctor really had a clue about the helmet side of it, not surprisingly...anyone know any biker doctors? haha
