Does my curvy 99 have separate gear box oil?

Nope uses engine oil to lube the gears!

Ahhh, I put 10/40 semi synth in my bike on Saturday.... help?

JonGeorge

1.5 litres roughly.

Back up...

1) Did you do this on a whim, or had you checked the oil level, on a flat, level surface with the engine off, and found the level in the sight glass was low enough to need 1.5L to bring it up to between low and high levels?
2) Did you use 10w/40 semi synth motorcycle engine oil or gearbox oil?

No, 2.3 litres of semi synthetic

Hi. It was on a flat all night. There was no oil in the sight glass and it took 1.5 litres of 10/40 semi.synth car oil :(

Better the wrong oil than no oil.

Did you hold the bike up level when you checked or was this with the bike on the side stand?

If you use car oil, my understanding is the clutch will not like it.

Yep, not good for the clutch at all :smt104

It will be fine. Car oil is only a problem in thinner grades than 10w40... and a slipply clutch can be cured... the big end bearings rattling round the sump CANT!

Don't go getting people paranoid about car oil, it's better than nowt and works fine in a lot of cases.

The important thing is was this with the bike level or on the sidestand. Cos one way you've been incredibly lucky not to bork the engine, and the other way you've just overfilled it by 3 pints!

Oil is much of a muchness my misses used to sell oil for Q8 petroleum and Its all the same if the viscosity eg 10/40 etc is right then it doesn't matter what it says on the bottle the labels are there to make you buy different stuff for your bike/car/lawnmower and people are stupid enough to believe what it says on the label.

all that matters with oil is the spec of it. All engines/manufacturers will advise you use a certain spec. I use 10w 40 oil in my SV and have done since the 1st. Oil is the same for all engines, even most petrol and diesel ones now

i wouldn't go buying oil off your missus then.

sorta right as the base stocks are all the same but its how its blended, what modifiers and stabilisers then add in friction reducers and cleaning agents. so no not all oils are the same.

topping up with car oil is ok but i wouldn't go doing every oil change with it in a bike. well i would if it were a ducati with a dry clutch.

You're right it can have additives put in it to reduce friction and such, all I know is she was told to pedal it if she could, its all the same with regards to viscosity so any engine that requires a 10/40 oil can operate with any 10/40 oil, it's only the purification process that differs,eg something aimed at bikes as opposed to cars will have less impurities such as dead flies, asylum seekers toenails and the like, this is mainly due to the components of a bike being smaller thus more delicate, but the difference is negligible, as lawnmowers/chainsaws get the least pure oil but have very small components and rev like a *rude word* , I (and this won't come as a shock to those that know me) use the same oil in the car (diesel), bike and lawnmower as I'm a tight git and never had any problems (other than the bike deciding to spray most of it on the road)!

Unless you wanted to buy several thousand gallons of it you couldn't!;)

Why would a more pure oil lubricate better?

Penry

Take off oil cap, remove sump plug, drain, refit sump plug, refill with suitable oil, pop the cap back on.. or buy an oil filter and pretend your doing it just for a service? :P

Why would a more pure oil lubricate better?

Yes but as I said the difference is negligible, I thrash my beast everywhere so what I gain through expensive oil is neither here nor there but if you like to bimble I would say buy better as it will deffo not shorten engine life although I wouldn't guarantee it will extend it.

No wonder Castrol oil is better than Q8 oil, always wondered about the flies and such.

Whilst there are a lot of people who obsess over oil, and seem paranoid about what's right, the above is not at all true.

There are very specific oils for certain circumstances, maybe one doesn't need to be quite as fussy as some would suggest, but be assured they are NOT all the same, and there most definitely ARE the wrong ones.

The bottom line is obviously that some is better than none, even if it isn't the ideal one.

And we're supposed to believe a word you say after you tell us this.

Btw... it's 'peddle' unless she was attempting to sell it off the back of a bicycle.

Yes but as I said the difference is negligible,

So a pure petroleum "oil" stock would be better lubricant than one with VI's, buffers, emulsifiers, detergents?

I only did a bit of tribology as part of my engineering qualifications but I think she either dumbed down explanations for you a lot or was not in any sort of technical sales.

No she never really went into detail, but as was the OP's question, no it don't matter that you put car oil in it, it will be fine your engine will not explode coz you didn't use £500 a bottle superlube!

And FFS you lot would die of shock if you saw some of the crap I pull to keep vehicles on the road, read what you like, get told what you like, but experience is everything, any oil is fine!

Nothing to do with the oil, just lack of time, engine rebuild this winter, been too busy last couple of years to do much maintenance, what with deployments, ceremonial duties and a move back here from Germany and other such time munching activities.;)

But 'tis still working!

all beer is the same - gets you p***ed
all wine is the same - as above
all televisions are the same - you point your furniture at them
all women are the same - nice until you marry one
all men are the same - can p*ss standing up

I read the above about your deployments, Germany and ceremonial duties lifestyle and wonder if this is your Thunderace.

This was mine, I sold it in 2002/3 to a squaddie who used it to do stupid amounts of miles between working in Germany and his family home with 21 Sigs at RAF Colerne.

That's a nice example of the breed, but alas I wish mine was that tidy, well it was tidy until Mark_h convinced me to wedge a Union Jack under the rear seat for a rideout and subsequently scratched the paint to buggery, and that psycho bird at Tesco that decided my fairing looked like a trolley park!
