following on from this (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=184324) thread i would like to keep a battery on standby so was wondering how long they can be stored 'dry' e.g. without putting the acid pack in?

I would imagine a fairly long time,as in years. Without the acid the plates /cells have nothing to react with. Kept lorry batteries like this[dry] for a couple of years without adverse affect.

Indeed, they'll last for many years. If it's a wet battery that's already seen some use then make sure it's fully charged before draining the electrolyte or it'll crap up the chemistry when you fill it again. You could even rinse the cells out with some DI water before storage then get some fresh acid in when you're ready to go!
