Apologies if this has been posted before but i did a quick search and didnt find it.

Im wondering if chain lube is really worth the cash? Ive had a £15 spray jobbie of PDL thats almost empty now, probably used up over the best part of a year but probably sub 2000 miles. I think thats seems pretty poor value for monye to me, i ride in all weathers but there are times ill clean it, lube it and go for 80 miles in the rain and its looking rusty again. I dont want to fit a scottolier as this bike will be sold in august(although i think im leaning there for the gsxr that ill have in aug)
I know some people use gear oil or engine oil, so i wondered if this is reccomended?

I use this, or it is something similar. Costs about £3. http://www.carlube.co.uk/index.cfm?product=125

My chain is lubed every 300 miles or so, and cleaned every 1200 miles.

I use old engine oil from oil changes mixed with cheapo chainsaw oil, fed through my Scottoiler.

i use castrol chain wax which i get from halfrauds.

was one of Ride magazines recommended buys.

nowhere near as expensive as your stuff

stays on well, with minimum fling

Chainsaw oil mixed in to give it anti fling? I have heard the castrol is good, do you get it for £10?

I like Wurth Dry Chain Lube. Not exactly cheap, but does the job without flinging all over your back wheel and surrounding area. Get reasonable life out of chains with it too.

I used to use wurth dry lube but tried their chain wax a while back. I found the wax can lasts twice as long and is easier to apply. Maybe leaves some visible residue on the chain, but who cares? Chain vanity is pretty silly imo!

Just Fit an automatic oiler and let your chain"Live Long and Prosper".

Best stuff is the castrol "racing" one in the green can... don't like waxes and dry lubes.

In fact... scottoiler and old engine oil... no messing...

depends on your budget.
depends how clean you want your bike.

my daily working bike, I use engine oil when ever i can bothered to lube the chain. Black spots on blue look okay, but its a working bike so who cares?

my weekend bike, Use £10 castrol anti fling stuff. Black looks very bad on a white bike, I cant be looking like a tramp on the weekend. Need to look like every other rider who bought a nice new bike to go out on a sunny weekend.

I use this:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_20 4443_langId_-1_categoryId_255223

Oil it, leave for a while and wipe with a cloth, still splatters but does the job!

Scottoiler / remove Scottoiler / sell SV / Buy GSXR / fit Scottoiler to it for Thousands of care free miles.
It will soon pay for itself ( unlike some of the tightwads on here )

I use this -

http://www.rocklube.com/

Got it very cheap at the Chain Reaction Cycles shop in NI last year. Spray on, leave, wipe off - chain clean and lubed and negligible fling. Advertised for push bikes but website says it can be used on motorbikes.

Also use the Sdoc 100 chain lube, keep small can under seat.

It's not like you can't take it off and fit to his next Bike.....

+1 for Castrol "Racing"---former Wurth wax user, so either really

A properly cared for chain should be good for 24k miles,I am a bit pedantic about maintenance and managed to get 44k out of my original chain and sprockets, the chain was a DID Heavy duty and sprockets original Triumph

A decent chain and sprockets, fitted with a scottoiler, run using old engine oil should be good for >40K miles. Better yet, they (apart from the initial 'bedding in' and final 'end of life' of the chain) will largely negate the need for chain adjustment, as the bike needs rear tyres sooner than the chain needs adjusting.

Yes, but a hassle for a few months

If it were me, I'd buy a Tutoro automatic oiler, does the same job as the Scottoiler, but doesn't require plumbing in. Just bolt it on & position oil feed pipe.

If he went for the basic model, its not much more expensive than that can of chain lube :)

I use putoline chain oil, spray can, i do it about every 200-300 miles, ive took my scott oiler off my drz, bloody pain in the ass, could never get it right, either ran out in no time and covered my back wheel or hardly anything came out and my chain got rusty.

I think it stopped working altogether recently so i ragged it off and threw it in the bin, id rather use a spray can.

My explorer has shaft drive so i dont have to really worry about that side of things with that.

I have the basic £20 turato it's ok if you remember to turn it on and more import off ( walks to garage to do that now)......
I use gear oil EP 75 w new fresh smelly and sticky.

seems too much agro to keep turning on and off those basic tutoro chain oilers.

A mate a work has just fitted the higher spec tutoro to his `02 plate tiger. It works with movement, so in theory flows oil only when the bike is being ridden. Hes experimenting with different oils at the mo to see what works.

I personally usually use old engine oil, used on my last curvy sv for 3 years with no noticeable wear, but I did keep it well oiled. The splatter is horrific though.

Have bought a can of yamalube chain oil, just because im fed up of the oil spray all over my left boot. Seems superb stuff, although Id love to know what other names it comes in.

Ok cheers guys it seems the verdict is that oil will suffice, got plenty so will use that til i get the new bike and scottoiler, and then put old oil in in when i run low on scotoil. Cheers!

A bit late, but I use Muc-Off Dry PTFE Chain Lube (and the Muc-Off chain cleaner to go with) as it faired pretty well in reviews. It's easy to get on, goes on as a liquid and then dries. Not let me down yet and not that expensive either.

The wurth drying stuff, quality. No flinging crap while you ride
