View Full Version : Hit by a van.

I was riding to work this morning, I stopped about 10m away from the back of this van making sure I was well within sight of his driver's side mirror. He then proceeded to reverse. At this point I was using the horn to it's fullest and had nowhere to go as there were cars parked on the opposite side of the road.
I managed to stay on the bike, still doing my damnedest to get the driver's attention. He eventually stopped and got out and proceeded to recite our most favourite phrase ever.
He admitted liability on the phone to my insurer but remains adamant that he checked his mirrors.
Now for the sympathy followed by criticism followed by an argument. In your own time, carry on.

Surely no-one can argue that you could have done any more? You held back so you were visible in his mirror and sounded the horn when it became clear he was reversing into you - saw a police biker fail to do both of these on an episode of Emergency Bikers.
Then again, if you had spent the past six months in the gym doing reverse running on the treadmill with heavy weights in both hands, you would have been able to furiously back-pedal at 20mph and dodge him. Just sayin'.

Gutted dude! WTF though!! Is it still ridable?
Now to pick the event apart, as you requested ...
1. In what world would you stop 10 metres behind a van?
2. Why was he reversing 10 metres?
Once you've adequately answered these questions to my satisfaction, you may receive additional sympathy.

reg-rec, i reckon
why didn't you move out the way?
Clearly your horn isn't loud enough...
I don't understand why he would reverse 10 metres. If it was 10 metres he would have heard your horn and stopped surely?

Normally I'd echo what others have said but instead I'll praise you for your newfound riding/stopping style of giving yourself plenty of room to the vehicle in front. Was this something learnt from the Essex lot?
Can you google map us where this happend ?.
we can judge the action of what we would have done.

The bike has some cosmetic damage to the front. I'm fine, little bit sore but generally ok.
As it turns out, the guy was reversing because he missed his turning.
I couldn't move out of the way because, one, I haven't been doing aforementioned backwards running with weights, and two, there were a large number of cars parked on the other side of the road.
Fallout, I stopped a long way behind it so that I could see his mirrors and see why he'd stopped.
I think I covered everything.
Pics man!! we all love pics!!!

If you were 10 metres behind him, you could have moved forward and alongside his driver side increasing your chance of being seen.

There was no way to get beside the van. And by the time he'd started reversing he would have been too close for me to get on the curb.
Also, I had my lights on full beam. Did I mention I could see his mirror and see his eyes. He didn't even look.

I made a point to take the pictures on the side stand to aid process of oil related abuse.

don't know if I am reading this wrong but you've used 2 different tenses-past and future.
I'd have mounted the kerb if that was the only way out, or got off the bike and used my hands to bang on the back of the van to get his attention. I wouldn't have sat there staring danger in the face.

It was a hypothetical situation in which the idea of mounting the curb had occurred to me.
To be honest I wasn't expecting him to slam it into reverse and come hurtling towards me so my reactions were a lot slower than if he'd done something different/normal.

These things happen incredibly quickly, and you invariably lose a moment before you actually believe what is happening.....
All you can do is move on. Matt will know if he thinks he could have done anything differently and his post is a reminder to all of us.
BTW Matt, what oil we can see looks a nice colour.....:)

Unlucky Matt, good thinking to get him on the phone with the insurer and admit liability, it's all too easy to lose your head through being pi$$ed off!
I really do need to get Stebel horns fitted to my bikes!

From one matt to another I've had this happen myself Matt.

All I can say is well done for not ending up underneath it.
I'm betting your commentry was something along the lines of...
"He better not actually reverse, woah woah woah oiiiiiiiiiiiii WOAHHAHHHAHHH... feck"
I seem to recall that was my thought process at least. Like you I was down a narrow road with double parked cars, I recall the bus and the van couldn't pass each other and when I've recounted it the only thing I could think to learn from it was to ALWAYS leave an escape route when stopping... and check my oil.
Maybe he recognised you?
With your public facing jobs I'm sure you will have made some enemies and some of those enemies may own vans.
But glad you're not hurt and the bike's not come off too badly.
