View Full Version : Recommend Me A Sport

It would appear that I get out of breath tying my own shoe laces. I didn't use to as I was quite active simply by my lifestyle. But these days I spend most of my time sat down, so I have been thinking of taking some exercise.

But I've no idea what to do.

Years back I tried going to a gym, but I lost interest. I think it was because I couldn't see any achievement in what I was doing. So that's why I want a sport. Trouble is I have no real interest in sports other than racing motorbikes, so have no idea where to even start?

Random martial art? Depending on which you choose there are various levels of fitness involved, and various levels of ferociousness required.
Sense of achievement? There are loads of belt-based gradings.

I did Karate for about 2 years and it was rubbish for fitness. Standing around doing drills with the occasional sparing session gets you no where. I also did a short stint doing CXT and that was brutal. Choose a martial art which specifically says it centres on fitness in the blurb.

If you have a mate who also wants to go on the pork life reduction journey with you, I'd recommend badminton. It's fun and easy to start with, and low impact as you start off. Then as you improve the tempo racks up.

Ballroom dancing. Those D list celebrities are always going on about how fit they are and how they've toned up being on Strictly. What's more you can wear a sparkly waistcoat at the next AR and give us a twirl.

I went for the same sort of time span and I didn't learn anything.

American Football?

There is a team very local to you called Swindon Storm, they train on Saturdays. First session is free then £3 a time after that with all kit provided for.

I am possibly thinking of having a go myself.

Kickboxing. If you go through the gradings, you'll start off with basic fitness and build core strength and cardio as you progress.

Alternatively, find a local place running boot camps. They're probably the best way to motivate yourself to start losing weight and getting fit. If they're run properly you'll start off with an assessment which will give you a baseline to work from and help you track your progress.

After 8 weeks or so of high intensity interval training I guarantee you'll have lost weight and feel massively better both physically and mentally.

The other thing that will help is eating healthily (if you don't already).

Good luck with whatever you choose and let us know how you get on.

Yeah, it's pretty crap. Worse thing is the whole grading thing is shambolic, with 6 year olds who can barely stand up being put through to keep them encouraged. I didn't learn anything useful either. Then I started doing CXT and in one lesson I learn more than I ever did in Karate.

I've never been fitter than when I used to box. So +1 for boxing if you want to get buff.
If you just want a personal improvement then Circuit Training/Bootcamps can be good although choose wisely and try a few because I've tried 2 locally, the first was more of a social meet up, chat and stretch session. I mean at the time it felt like a work out but then I tried another which a friend recommended and its a torture session by comparison to the first but after 6 weeks of doing 2 sessions per week you cannot help but notice the change in shape and ability.

Swimming and join a club when you plateau to then get the competative element you seem to be looking for.
Exercises a wide range of muscles and it's virtually imposible to injure yourself.

+1 for squash

It's indoors, it's pretty cheap to do and matches are normally over in 30 mins and it's a great workout. Problem is most matches are followed by a swift half in the club bar so you might not lose much weight.

Same here Tony, and I'm not asthmatic, I don't smoke, I weigh under 9 stone and my blood pressure and general health is fine. I walked 4 miles at a rapid pace yesterday no problem - any more and my heel is agony - but stairs, pah forget it. Had to climb 11 flights in to get to the top of a hotel recently and thought I was going to die by about the 7th floor.

+1 on the squash or badminton. as long as you've got half decent hand eye co-ordination you'll be quite good quite quickly and then it's just a case of you playing a lot n you'll be fit as anything in no time. as it's short intervals at high intensity it really gets your ticker working hard!

Thanks all for the suggestions.

However I should start by saying I don't get out of breath tying my shoes laces, I didn't think a humorous quip would be taken so seriously.

Now going through the ideas I have to say Climbing isn't really a sport, its more of something to do. Besides I've done that before but didn't really get on with it. Dancing isn't going to happen as I have no rhythm (the main reason my drumming career didn't get anywhere), and for some reason its women only if you want to do Pole.

Cycling is far to dangerous, and running isn't a sport, again like climbing its something to do. Swimming is something I haven't done for years but doesn't strike me as a sport, I fear drowning.

Martial Arts, now that's an interesting one. I was an Olympic Wrestler when I was at school, but I cant find any local clubs. By the sounds of it Karate is one to avoid, but what is CXT? I have seen MMA and UFC but that just looks like competitive spooning so that's not going to happen. Will think about kick boxing though.

As for American Football, not sure if its for me. From what I understand its just Rugby where some very big men run at each other to knock each other down while trying to anticipate how an egg will bounce. Only the Americans wear padding and for every 15 seconds of play they need to talk about it for 5 minutes. Besides, I'm not built for it.

Squash and Badminton. I always get them confused, which one is the limp wrist and which one is the heart attack in a room? I've done the room one before and enjoyed that. How do you get started in that?

they're actually really quite similar in my opinion (I used to be a level 2 qualified badminton coach), in badminton you just need to have a slightly more flexible wrist than is required for squash (which I also played to a very good standard). either or could cause a heart attack as could any other form of exercise if you're health is already not great, but non activity is worse than actually getting out there and doing something.

squash as a starter will probably be more strenuous than badminton, but is probably easier to get to grips with if you've never played a racket sport before. you can also practice and play squash on your own if need be, as you have a wall that belts the ball back at you unlike badminton (and this, I believe this is one of the best training methods). however both can be fantastic for your fitness.

I think if you tried the gym again, but set goals, you may enjoy it more. If you aim to be able to run, row, and cycle 2 miles each in one session (that's a target I set for myself previously), or gain "X" kg, or look like a particular body shape, it makes it more compelling. It's always dull at the beginning, but when you get into it, your body releases endorphins that make you feel good every time you exercise. I think it's also one of the best ways of keeping fit, because you can target strengthening weaker body parts (for example, I'm concentrating on strengthening my back and improving my balance to eradicate back pain) or work on both strength and fitness evenly. My girlfriend can run 15 miles at an incredible pace, but can't do a single pull-up. I see guys in the gym every day who can bench 200kg, but I bet their cardio is poor. I find I can balance my fitness the best if I use the gym. I do a sport quite intensely as well (8+ hours a week) but whether I keep doing sport or not, I will always use a gym because I think it's the best thing for me. I can give you so many more examples if you wish. Most people think "gym" = bulking guys on steriods. It does, but you also have lots of cardio equipment, and classes that range from boxercise to spinning. Classes are great. They really help your motivation and are accepting of any fitness level.

The Marriott hotel gym right next to yours is the cheapest, and they have a pool, sauna, jacuzzi etc which makes the whole experience nicer. They also have lots of classes every day.

As for other sports which would be accessible for you logistically, Swindon has an athletics team which is cool. It's mostly kids but if you fancy starting throws (discus/jav/hammer) the coach is great and the ages of people are much higher. They're always open to people joining in, you don't have to be special. I can only speak for the Swindon basketball team too, but if you haven't played quite avidly in your past, you're unlikely to get into the team and it's quite hard to improve to such a level on your own!

OK, he was joking on the breathless bit but would any of us seriously go to our GP beforehand? "Dr, I'm a fatso but otherwise have no medical issues and I'm thinking of taking up exercise. What do you think?". "Get on with it fatso! Now get out of my surgery and don't come back with any more stupid questions!!".

I agree with the others about the gym/swimming being a bit boring but the target idea has worked for me. Lengths of the pool in so many minutes, weights on the resistance machines... Also, the classes in my local gym are well attended and varied and having others around you makes you work harder - mix the classes up a bit to stop getting bored with the same one over and over.

I start my next boot camp tomorrow at 6:50am. I had my pre-assessment last night and have set some goals such as 5% reduction in body fat.

Tonight I will be at Muay Thai getting sweaty with some other dudes (repeat on Thursday) and Saturday I'll be at circuit training doing squats, mountain climbers, kettle bell stuff and generally sweating and wanting to puke.

The bootcamp is a charity thing that is for 3 weeks and I'll probably only manage 2 x early morning sessions each week. That will be fine if I keep up the Tues/Thurs Muay Thai class and circuit training. After bootcamp has finished, I'll be looking to get to the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes again with my youngest lad. He's getting better at it now and is starting to pose a real risk around the house (think Kato for those old enough to get the reference).

Try lots of different sports and then settle on one or two that you enjoy. Set some goals and give it a go.
