View Full Version : Lens advice D3200
Good morning all. I currently have a D3200 with the kit 18-55mm and a Tamron 70-300mm lens. I am looking to add another lens as the kit lens is ok for close up type photos and the Tamron is a bit big to carry all the time. I have been looking at the Nikon 18-105mm and the 55-200mm. I think the 105 will fill the gap nicely as I'm used the range of zoom from my Fuji HS10. What are your thoughts?

I'd go with the 105 too. I've the 18-55 and 55-200 currently, would be nice to have somthing in the middle also that does "most things"

Given that you've already got two zooms which cover the same area as the 18-105mm, I'd consider adding something else. The choice would depend on what you like shooting but here are a few suggestions:
Landscapes/travel : 12-24mm f/4
Portraits : 85mm f/1.8
Macro : 85mm f/3.5
Sports/wildlife : 300mm f/4
Low light : 35mm f/1.8
One or two of these aren't so cheap, but you should be able to pick up a decent used example.
Just my thoughts,
Keith.
Problem is that I have been used to the HS10 and I would like a do-all lens. I know I cannot get the range from a single lens but I would like to try and cover wide angle to just over what the kit lens can offer.
You can get a large range from one lens. Nikon sigma and tamron all do 18-200ish lenses.
Whether or not that is the right solution for you depends on your requirements. They're certainly convenient, and the optics are much better than they would have been a few years ago. They possibly won't be as sharp as a set of dedicated lenses but if the prefect lens for a shot is heavy, expensive and never with you it's not a lot of good.
Personally I shoot 90% of my photography with a 17-50mm f2.8 tamron as I discovered I find that focal length works for me and a wide aperture was important to me.
Depends what you need

Flexibility is what I need really. Looking at the 55-200 at the mo.

I'd look at the 18-200mm Nikkor. I had one and it's a very very good piece of glass.

Nice lens, cost on that is a bit prohibitive though. I have been looking through the used lenses as well.

My reason for keeping the price down is that I am still learning on the DSLR and don't want to get too deep into lenses.
