Recommend any games you discovered here that you think others will enjoy
I'm making this thread so I can get in to more games that I probably wouldn't have known about. Share your finds :)
I will recommend Jazzpunk. It is a very funny game. Lots and lots of hidden jokes and stuff you can easily pass by if you are simply trying to complete the game quickly. It's not that sort of game. It is a reasonably short game designed to be played slowly and enjoyed whilst exploring everything. It's just a relaxing game with really enjoyable audio/SFX

Just got into the steam world myself, namely because of DayZ.
So have yet to find any niche games but I'm subbed!

I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to collecting Steam games, playing them is an entirely different manner. I think I've properly bothered to play about 30.

Wargame is worth picking up, Magic 2014 is if you're happy modding your client to introduce custom decks ( skip 2015 entirely, it's cack ). Dundef, Terraria and GMod can all be had for pennies and yet I've had 20+ hours from each easily, definitely some of my more efficient purchases.
I wish I had more time to play the X3 series.
Goat Simulator!
Yes!!! everytime I play this, I can't stop laughing. Seeing a goat walk up a crane ladder seems to be rather amusing.
Team fortress 2 is still good for a blast

It might be the best soundtrack ever.
I'm an old fogy that got left behind on PC games years ago. Still play the Age of Empires games, Medal of Honor and Sudden Strike.

Anybody here pew-pewing about on Elite: Dangerous?
Only pre-ordered myself. Never played the much revered original or sequels.
Looks tough and looks like it will take a bit of learning. Although I have a lot of experience waggling my stick.

I am likely going to buy a gaming PC just so I can play ED to be honest. I'd stopped with the gaming PC thing quite some time back and moved to laptops for general use....this will pull me back in for sure.
Head tracking, voice commands, and VR headsets...bring it on!
I'll wait and get the game once it's been out for a bit, likely Jan/Feb time once I can justify a new "development" PC for my company :)
For now I'll have to settle for YT vids of others playing :(

Well I couldn't wait, after watching a lot of Elite Dangerous game play on twitch I went and bought it on pre-order
I did hope that my current i7 laptop (thinkpad x230) would cope with basic settings so I downloaded the combat tutorial app and even running lower than 800x600 it is a joke, my poor laptop with no seperate GPU (just the cpu based hd4000 stuff) was not up to it in the slightest.
So....I've bought a new gaming laptop, sorry, I mean development laptop ;), so that I can run it properly and play when away a week at a time stuck in hotels of an evening...the new toy should arrive on the 18th, it's an MSI GS60 2QE with a Nvidia 970m GPU :)
I didn't bother going for 3K / 4K screen, I figured I'd use the difference in the price to purchase a separate 29" super wide monitor for at home later on instead. Who needs more than 1920 x 1080 on a 15" laptop screen anyway!
Roll on the 18th!

kaivalagi
15-12-14, 10:44 AM
The map Is our galaxy with a few assumptions...400 billion star systems...it will take a while to navigate. The devs even calculated and placed where voyager would be in year 3300 and it's since been found :)
As for the graphics and gameplay I'm not sure what the reviewers are on but I think it's great. They're probably basing all this comparing to Star Citizen that will not be out for a very long time and need a super computer to run well!
There have been a few issues post updates in gamma testing and they'll likely be a few more on release but the devs are doing an outstanding job getting issues ironed out and once everything settles it'll be trouble free I'm sure.
To be fair I am biased as I love the elite series having played the original as a kid, the game concept is spot on.
Get onto twitch and watch some gameplay to see for yourself!
edit: I WILL be getting an Oculus Rift once they're properly released...that as well as using something like a Saitek X55 and Voice Attack based controls will be insane!

That fella really did seem to like the oculus with the game!
It will be great when that becomes mainstream.
Is Elite Dangerous a game where if you die you start from scratch?
It looks like fun but more so as a group rather than lonewolfs?
kaivalagi
15-12-14, 07:31 PM
Traditionally it was always a single player, exploring the galaxy etc but it will have 3 modes, solo, group and open, all needing Internet to maintain the universe and allowing your progress to switch between the modes seamlessly.
You can pay insurance to get back your ship when you die, but you need to make sure you have surplus credits in the game.
You can be a bounty hunter, pirate, explorer, trader, miner or a mix of any.
Have a nosey on twitch, I'm watching this guy play at the mo: http://www.twitch.tv/londongaming4fun

8 of us queued outside a small outpost awaiting docking permission, just hanging watching some very amusing flying. Found my free Eagle in Dalton. Probably punt it. Had a couple of interdictions, vectored out of one and boosted away on one I "lost."

A little Elite update...
I've now gotten past 1mil in assets, 300k in credits on tap and doing a mix of trading, exploring, bounty hunting in my moderately pimped out Cobra with gumballed lasers/multi cannons, 32t cargo and 13ly jump range.....find a good trading route and do that in between killing stuff :) Next on the list is an ASP but that'll need 50mil assets to be a force to be reckoned with!
Glad I have gaming laptop...I'll be playing in the evening when stuck in a hotel come mid Jan onwards.

Wow someones doing well!
I've moved upto a Hauler doing trade routes. Still learning the ship handling though so soon I'll feel upto taking on some combat too (Not with the Hauler!)
Will add you next time I'm on.
Even the trading is quite satisfying to I'm enjoying it a lot.
Do you play mainly SOLO or ONLINE?
I started online but for certain missions it was like everybody else was doing the same one and therefore I has to switch to SOLO to complete them.
kaivalagi
22-12-14, 08:07 PM
I played solo until the cobra...now I'm open all the time.
I've started investigating unknown signal sources in Anarchy systems and today I got ganged on by 2 eagles and a sidewinder...down to 50% after losing shields twice and only just managed to recoup repair costs with the earned bounties! After all the hard work of building up your finances it really gets the blood pumping when you're getting a beating! I still need to get a lot better at combat and distributing power between subsystems suitably for each situation, more to system for shield repairing, more to weapons when attacking etc
In theory open or solo should make little difference...especially if you've travelled away from the start location or sol! It's dangerous out there regardless! Get good at escaping interdictions!
STRAMASHER
23-12-14, 07:56 AM
I have been playing always open unless there was a big queue at an outpost, when I would save and exit to solo to get easy access.
After dumping my unarmed starter Sidewinder I fecked off somewhere (much) quieter (never any queues) in my now pimped but unarmed Hauler. Building my rep there with an Independant, cargo missions, exploring and working up my trading routes. Saving for a Cobra and see if that gets me into the gunz!
Yup the old heart skips when you see another player further out, friend or foe? I scanned the only other human outside a station in my neck of the woods (a harmless Viper) and I think he got spooked and fecked off!? Or maybe I was lucky I had reached the no-fire zone after a recent interdiction with my boat full of Auto Fabricators!
Absolutely loving it.
kaivalagi
23-12-14, 10:40 AM
I'm loving my mini cannons, took 2 secs to destroy an Adder after his shields were gone...stupid idiot thought it was a good idea to interdict me....was an easy 8K :)
One thing I am doing now is taking a wide berth when super cruising to stations, putting the hud info to the outside and approaching in a curve...seems to cut back the number of interdictions as I'm not in the main flight path
I'm mostly C rated with all my bits (except weapons which are hard to find and expensive), once I get to B for power/shields/thrusters I'll go for a gigantic wander into empire space and earn from discovery I think

How many hours of playing would you estimate? Or is there a tally somewhere?
There doesn't seem to be an hours played stat anywhere, I've played most days since the release date, some for just an hour but other days like yesterday and today I've maybe put in 4 hours each. It's been interesting though, my ship migration has been: Sidewinder -> Eagle -> Hauler -> Cobra -> Type 6 (keeping Cobra too) -> Asp. I may then go on to Imperial Clipper -> Python and then stay with that but I will be in the Asp for quite a while before moving on again, if at all.
I did a hard graft today to get the necessary funds for my upgrades, did atleast 15 round trips trading and making about 140K for each. A necessary evil of the game if you want to progress in your ships faster. Now I have the Asp I now need a further 20+ million to kit it out as best as can be for combat...good job it's a good trading ship too...I may get a smaller craft like a viper to do combat on the cheap soon though, just to mix it up a bit.
Out of curiosity, what controls setups are you using, mouse and keyboard, gamepad, flight stick and throttles?
I'm just using kb and mouse as I will be paying away from home soon with work and I wont have space for a hotas, it is fine for the most part...I do plan on getting an X52 pro at some point though as combining thrusters with normal flight control is nearly impossible right now, it's like a game of twister on the kb. To be better at combat you really need to be able to use the thrusters to have extra manuvourability

Bounty hunting, he was a 200K target
Cargo is lost, as are any bounties not cashed in or planetary scans
If I didn't have the rebuy credits in the bank I would have lost that Viper, all 3 million credits worth :)

I don't like that tool, much easier using the http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk site online, you can load that on a phone/tablet and not have to alt-tab out! You can contribute to it by taking screenshots and using eliteocr I think, never done it though

Gonna do a few more runs and get something a bit livelier than the Hauler.
Had my issues tho, got stuck in a star's heat cloud and had to take the hit on my shields to going down to 55% to get out using the supercruise.

Never done rares
Oh, today I royally screwed up...getting cocky with speed around stations I thought I could out accelerate a python out of dock by retracting landing gear, hitting up thruster, aiming and boosting....I managed to slam the wall next to the slit and explode...500k insurance and 900k cargo lost lol! Made it back in 2 hours though and added an extra 1 Mil buffer since too...I now have 3mil cash and 13mil in assets from 2 ships....onwards and upwards!
Redmist
03-01-15, 11:30 PM
Yeah I'll join up, Charunda sounds familiar so I'll check.
I was heading to "Any Na" to collect another Rare item.
Rares are good for the smaller craft because you can carry 6 or 8 items and make 100K+ on the trip. Bad bit is that you need to be heading 160lys from where you got them to make that money.
Planning a route over that distance is tricky though. The map is not designed for those kind of distances.
I mean technically as long as your heading away from the source of the item, who cares you'll still make big money, but ideally I want to get to another Rare source so I can carry on with the scheme.
I managed to Pinball around a station too after the keyboard stopped responding, after switching to one of the HUD screens and back all controls returned but I managed to smash into the port 3 times!

We could do a rare run together maybe?
I assume you've learn how to run when interdicted?
It'll be good when wings functionality turns up, I think then we'll be able to travel more as one etc

Yeah a rare run sounds good. Although it'd be interesting to see how the stock levels work for each other.
Because the stocks are rare, the available stock is low, but I think its just low for each Commander, to try and even the playing field perhaps.
So I'd hope we'd both be able to buy the same amount each and not have to split the available goods. Guess we won't know till its tried.
Do you mean a special evading technique? I am ok at the mini-game thing but I think you may mean a tactic of dropping out of supercruise in an emergency and jumping off again? I haven't actually done that yet tho.
Whats your current jump distance? Mines 24ly unladen and 16ly laden which really helps with rare trading.

15ly laden, 18ish unladen I think...if we use economical routing I think it won't be so different....more scanning available
Alternatively we meet up, me in my Viper and go hunting together ;)
My Viper jumps about 12ly though....

OK I don't mind either.
I'm just about to buy a new ship, what you reckon the cobra or viper? I have 850k credits
I think I'd want something that can still travel far for the rare runs but can also handle itself in a fight.

I'm heading to Leesti - George Lucas station to kit out a viper.
Then the fun begins!
I figure the hauler is capable of being my cash cow with these rare runs.

I was gonna say get a cobra if you want just one good ship for now, you could then sell the hauler to fund nice modules...you could still do this a little later after having some fun in the Viper though....just make sure with any ship you are going to sell/trade in that you sell off/downgrade all the modules first before hand...if you sell with all the bits they return 90% instead of 100%!
I went Sidewinder -> Eagle -> Hauler -> Cobra -> Cobra + Type 6 -> Asp -> Asp + Viper
I will likely go from here with Asp + Viper -> Asp with A rated -> Asp + Type 7 -> Python
I spent 3 mil on my Viper btw! All A rated modules...you may find switching to solely a cobra may be the better option for now though so you have a good fighter and more cargo space than a hauler too sof or the long rare runs you have some decent protection for yourself....or keep the viper and upgrade the hauler to a type 6 when you can, that'll give you over 100T cargo space then but still leaves you quite vulnerable!!

Well I went and bought a viper. Before I read this, but still I hear the viper is the best fighter so that was my direction.
Added some cheaper additions so I will be no where near as deadly as you!
Took out my first ship in solo mode, just a wee sidewinder but its a start.
Gonna switch to open for giggles now.

Just make sure you have the insurance covered lol!
I love my Viper, prefer it to the cobra for combat because of the turn rate and acceleration. The shields are better too but once gone the hull doesn't hold out too long!
I do miss my Cobra though...just need another 20mil for the Asp to bring it upto spec!

For any Eliters....a beta backer player and twitch streamer is likely to be organising an group exploration in a few weeks, a long distance one to a nebula somewhere...he's in a kitted out Python so we have good protection...I'd say the minimum spec ship for this ought to be a Cobra MK III with decent FSD but I'll find out more in a week or so. Let me know if you're interested in joining the journey and I'll see what I can sort out!

Could be interested depending on the general time it might be happening, i.e. evening / weekend.
Also any idea roughly how long it will take to complete the journey?
Had a day off it today but will be back on tomorrow eve.

He thinks it'll be more than could fit in the normal evening so likely weekend, either most of one day or evening through til early hours
I did just over an hour tonight, raked in another 2mil or so....only another 16mil to go....in no rush though

Sold the Hauler and now running trade in the Type 6.
Lets hope I'm not Interdicted too much!

Congrats, so you have a Viper and a T6 now? Nice
I'm holding off on Asp upgrades, saving up for a T7 first instead for a better profit margin and to have a trader once the Asp is combat ready. Only 14mil to go for that then the 30mil countdown starts for the Asp upgrades lol....
Got a nice 16ly each way run that nets 250k Cr :)
btw, have you tried software called "voice attack"? I use to to do a lot of the controlling of things in Elite, saves me remembering all the keys. e.g. I say "boost" or "chaff" or "power to weapons" etc whilst concentraing on other things, free for up to 20 commands and only £5 to register for a whole lot more.
Redmist
10-01-15, 12:04 AM
Yeah I registered for it and I used it a lot initially. Sadly my missus was taking the mickey so I stopped using it so much, I think when I explore more of the functions of ED I will be using it more!
Where abouts in the universe are you? Still around Charunda? Sadly both my ships need an FSD upgrade so I need to get earning before I can make long journeys again. Might be on tomorrow with the crap weather ooop north.

I'm at duamta right now, trading on a short run in my T7, trying to get it ready for a better route which has a bigger jump distance...making 350k/round trip at present.
The biggest benefit to voice attack is doing multiple key pressing from one command, so for example when I say 'power to weapons' it resets power distribution then assigns all it can to weapons leaving me with one pip on sys and engines. The wife things I'm nuts :)
Last night I was drinking rum with a streaming pirate on twitch, it was great fun lol

By all that's holy how on earth do you manage to control anything with a mouse, trying to get a hotas just now, preferably something cheaper than 250 as that all that seems to be in stock anywhere in uk, lol

Switch yaw and roll around so the mouse moves as you would expect and roll is on the keys!
X52 pro is the most common it seems, should be able to get one somewhere...must try the mouse/kb with those changes first, it works very well!

Im using one of these....

Amazing vfm. Solid. Good feel. Heavy enough not to skite about the desk. Supported in game.
Use mine in conjuction with mouse (in starport/CMDR's Log) and keyboard (for all the stuff not assigned to stick).
Running a T6 and a very spendy Cobra in BD-00 3426. So much to do so little time!

Does it have a twist stick for roll? Amazing for the price if it does...another hotas on the budget end if the t.flight x hotas by thrustmaster, lots are using that too, not quite a cheap as that one though, but still under £40
Asp next then? The Cobra/T6 combo is a good one...I will be buying another Cobra again once I've decked out the Asp!

Yaw is on the throttle. I soon got used to it and its got a nice analogue action.
An Asp? Just got the T6 at the weekend! And bought an Advanced Discovery Scanner for the Cobra. So out mapping the locale with a bit of bounty hunting. I do see one in my distant future though. The joy of six... hardpoints!
I quite fancy an Eagle or Sidey next, stripped down for range, for some more gorgeous Hi-Res photography.
I have always played Open (unless for photos,) not too busy where I am and folk have so far seemed decent or indifferent but got the heebie-geebies after spending on the T6 and traded only in Solo as I had to jump to some extremely busy systems. Lost ma bottle mate!:-(
Happy travels.

I was surprised when I tried a sidewinder recently....the cockpit view is awesome and the max jump on A rated aint bad, better than the maxed out Viper...I use them to move all my armada to a new location as I like to be able to jump in and out of each of my ships centered around where I am trading. Basically I buy one at my new home, upgrade to A rated, travel to where my ships need to come from, sell all the upgrades, swap over ship, sell sidewinder and go again, maybe lose 10K max, if that. I currently have a T7 (up to C/B spec), an Asp (up to C/B spec) and a Viper (A spec) so get to do the trading, exploration and bounty hunting in all three nicely :)
Mind you to get here I've done some serious grinding, I bought the T7 outright (no trade ins) and it took me the best part of 3 days to trade in my Asp with 120T cargo space to get the credits...now I have it though I have some seriously good returns on trading, about 450K/round trip (2 jumps each way) so I can now upgrade the Asp fairly quickly and most importantly when the mood suits!
First day away from home in the new job and I'm glad to say I get 4g connectivity through my phone at the hotel, more than 20MB download speed, so I'll be on Elite in the evenings as originally planned :)
