Age of kill
British film starring Martin Kemp. Shockingly bad. Terrible. Avoid.

Child 44
Stars Tom Hardy - I think he's great.
Set in a rather grim Russia, about a series of child murders. Not gory. Worth watching. My wife didn't like it much and whilst it wasn't Toms best film, it was worth watching

The watch -- argh balls ;) Richard ayoade being Richard ayoade
Pitch perfect - why oh why .. oh I know it was so good they made pitch perfect 3
The hobbit - a 3hr story about short people going to a castle but not quite getting there. Good for those that like the story about short people, tall people and a old fogie heading to a mountain with dubious Ratner jewellery.

Dragon - Donnie yen.. slow but engaging at the end. More plot twists than a packet of Fusilli. Not your usual chopsocky affair

+1

I watched Locke recently on Netflix.

An entire film shot inside a BMW driving down the motorway doesn't sound like a winner but I thought it was utterly brilliant.

Blackhawk Down. I'm on my own for a few nights so I'm watching stuff Lady Poppy would not like. Quite enjoyed it (never saw it when it came out) but as with all films of this ilk they seem to have never empty magazines in their guns... Best bit was the guy deafened by his buddy's heavy calibre weapon shouting "WHAT?" Every time someone spoke to him.

Not strictly a movie, but 6 episodes back to back of True Detectives, fabulous stuff. This was series 1 with Woody Harlsen & Matthew McCaunahey as the detectives.

I wanted to see this at the cinema but it only had a very limited release. Has Ewan got a big beard?

Last film I saw was Home. I take the nephews to the Odeon kids screenings on the weekends as I get free tickets so if there's a fun on they like the look of we go.

I also went to the premiere of Warriors which is a film about the Maasai and FGM which was very good. I gave them a few hundred quid to help make it, as did a lot of the cricket journalists, photographers and media. A story with telling.

I have Edge of Tomorrow but I've not watched it yet. Looks ljust like Source Code to me. I do find it frustrating that there aren't more new ideas for films (and all these remakes of films just a few years old? Ridiculous)

PyroUK
06-08-15, 07:12 PM
You're right in that it's a similar premise to source code, which I also liked, but thankfully the sfx in it and slightly different aim (aliens) differentiate it enough for me.

Unlike some other films which are essentially the same, e.g. armageddon and deep impact.

Fantastic four. Don't. Just don't.

The entire movie felt like a 1.5 hour trailer.

In fact, you know when they say all the best bits are in the trailer? Well this is worse. The trailer was like a directors cut version as they cut a whole scene from the film which may have actually saved it

Thanks for the warning, I was thinking about seeing this film but it's a remake of a film that's only 10 years old and has less Jessica Alba in it.

It is meant to be a reboot but it failed epicly. The original ones weren't good either however were better.

Sue storm looks good, but that's about it.

According to the internets there may have been issues in production and the studio, Fox, got involved and this what ruined it.

The director actually apologised for the film 😕

Wishing I went to see rogue nation which has received very good reviews

Terminator Genisys - The previous terminator makes this look like a Mr bean rom com. More holes that swiss cheese and more cheesey deja vu than Shirley Ghostman. Think Pierce Bronsnan 007 rather than Daniel Craig.

It's a reasonable watch which harks back to the previous films, dare I say it even includes the poor renditions of the iconic scenes in the first film. Unfortunately this means it is a bit predictable and even with a few plot twists it ultimately fails to turn the tide. The chemistry isn't really there and in reality Sarah would have dumped the chump gone off with someone else. The most amusing part has to be the cgi version of Arnie doing a much better acting job of the terminator than the real one. :) . A franchise that really has run its course with the main protagonists.

Amadeus

Gemma Bovary

Feels quite French (it's set in France so that shouldn't be a surprise) in many ways, but not a great film. If you like French films and have a couple of hours, you could do worse than watch this. Has Gemma Arterton in it.

All I can say is that it was a slow evening that was made even slower by the viewing of Orc wars. A retired soldier moves to the country only to find he has orc neighbours and a magical portal to another world from which they appear.
Enter damsel in distress being chased by the orcs and a rather attractive estate agent to the rescue. Cue big bun fight for the entire film. I see where Jupiter ascending took its story from. Its low budget, low entertainment and has special effects dating from the Goonies era. Watch it if you like your Orcs otherwise save the few hours for old age.

I always like double acts, like Morecambe and Wise, Little and Large, Nuzzle and scratch, even Spongebob and Patrick. With Hill and Tatum you get a feeling its going to be more D1ck and Dom.

Two ex high school enemies who enroll in the police department and become partners in an undercover sting at a local school. This movie is a light hearted gaze at the shenanigans of lost youth. Funny , cringey, daft and full of stereotypes. It feels like it came off the conveyor belt of American Pie but thats not such a bad thing.

Our partners grow up and challenge their fears to finally make an arrest and find out who the dealer is.
It comes as no suprise that both Hill and Tatum work well together and carry off the characters well. Its the same fare as most of their back catalogue. Tatum as the loveable rogue and Hill as the dead pan stooge.
An enjoyable watch if you need a few laughs.

why dont people like the hulk films. they are superb but i also thought the tv series was good.

i'm a huge Marvel and DC fan and i think it stems from reading all those comics when i was younger :-)

i watch films to distract me from reality the more it immerses me from reality the more i like the film. i dont care what i watch as i always have the option of turning it off. there are no bad films (with the exception of The Room) just peoples tastes are different. i dont read books so i have no idea what a film should have compared to the book so i'm unbiased. ok i tell a lie i have read a few books then watched the films but i dont expect a film that lasts 2hrs to be anything as comprehensive as the books. if you are the type that reads books then expects the film to be the same then i pity you. my sons are the type that are avid readers and get disappointed in films and i keep reminding them 'its not a book'.

i have 8tb of storage of 1to1 ISO films and thats just my personally owned dvd/br collection, i also rent discs from lovefilm. yes i like films. am i a film buff.. NO! i just like watching films and dont want to take them apart in every single little detail or watch the making of as to me it spoils the magic. as for film critics i think they are the biggest bunch of havebeens on the planet and i dont trust any of their reviews. if someone tells me a film is rubbish i'll watch it and make my own mind up and i urge everyone to do the same.

one of my all time favourite films is The Ghost Train (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ghost_Train_%281941_film%29)

That is some effort Dave Preston. Is that the order in which the films were released?

I don't agree with you're views on Guardins of the Galaxy though, I thought it is by far the best Marvel film on there.

Agents of Shield is alright but I couldn't watch more than a few episodes, it felt like watching the A-Team.

I am a fully fledged GEEK and proud of it, I doubt there is a well know scifi or comic movie/tv show I haven't watched
to answer some of the q's
1/ I am a super hero, I can drink any of you under a table in ne evening, costume is org hoody and jeans
2/ long few days joys of a heart attack and f all to do
3/ I am a hulk fan and if they had used Mark Ruffalo for the original movie it may have saved it, but Norton wasn't the right guy for it nor was the other wooden guy before him
4/they were watched in connecting order so all the story lines from the various series/movies run continuously, you pick up loads of little extra quirks and points that otherwise you would have missed, for example ep 8-15 of shield lead up to winter soldier then the rest of that season deals with the aftermath, so you get the build up, the event then the fallout making it a far more complete story,
5/ lets get this straight GOTG is not in itself a bad movie, I just think it is to far removed from the rest of the marvel universe which I enjoy
6/ I only go green after drinking with xxxbadgerxxx

As asked for review of season 1 of Daredevil
Darren I see what you mean, throughout the entire season the main character Daredevil stays 1 dimensional and wooden, he gets in a fight starts off winning then starts to take a kicking then pulls it back for a victory at the end, every fight. the saving grace for the series is every and I mean every other character in the show grows and most become intriguing in their own ways. tbh take the daredevil out of the show and its very good, hopefully with some better writing they can save the main character in season 2

Rise of the planet of the apes - I didnt see the original tv series or any of the other films which helped as I dont think it has any connection to any of the others. The film played out like a cross between superman / marvel series type films. There is empathy towards James Franco's quest to find a solution to his fathers Alzheimers. Easy on the eye and reasonably fast paced. It is well shot and quite entertaining but dont expect any sense out of the storyline or a cerebral night in.
No quasi human ape type Helen bonham carter was a huge bonus

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter.

Film based on an urban myth, that's based on an urban myth !!!!

This is the story of a sad and lonely Japanese office worker, Kumiko. She watches Fargo, so much the video tape is worn out. Believing that the film is a true story, as stated at the beginning of Fargo, she goes to Fargo in search of the money hidden by the Steve Buschemi character.

The second urban myth, that this is a true story, truth is that a Japanese student committed suicide and was found dead in the woods near Fargo. Media made up a story that she was looking for the hidden money from Fargo following a conversation with a state trooper. This being the second of the urban myths.

Worth a watch, but wouldn't like to say it would be everybody's cup of tea. Peculiar would best describe.

6.7 on IMDB.

Foxcatcher: The greatest Olympic Wrestling Champion brother team joins Team Foxcatcher led by multimillionaire sponsor John E. du Pont as they train for the 1988 games in Seoul - a union that leads to unlikely circumstances. One to watch 4/5

American Sniper: Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle's pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. Back home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty, however, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind. Another decent flick 4/5

Northern Soul: Set in 1974, an authentic and uplifting tale of two friends whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of black American soul music. Entertaining 3/5

The girl with the dragon tattoo - the daniel craig one. Overall a decent enough flick, watched the original swedish one years ago and think I enjoyed that more.

The main problem with this film is the sound effects and soundtrack. Over intrusive all the way through the film. Soundtrack by trent reznor (sp) of NIN and continually got in the way of the dialogue and had to rewind on numerous occasions to catch what was being said. The sound effects just really got on my nerves, I understand putting in wind effects to reinforce the cold chilly atmosphere, but when they are inside the house !!!! Sat in a cafe in london, all you can hear is the traffic outside, at a train station - the tannoy !!! You get the picture.

Ridiculous and infuriating.

The Brothers Bloom - a highly entertaining con romp.
A pair of con-men set up complicated scams to rob rich people. Some genuine laugh out loud moments, which are quite rare in cinema comedies. Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody & Rachel Weitz. She was Ok, not a great fan of hers but she was OK in this flick. Well cast as the ditzy millionairess. Nice selection of hats.

Cowspiracy on Netflix. OK it's a documentary rather than film as such but it's an eye opener.

Its a sci fi movie based on that grand daddy fps shooter Doom.. well the one after wolfenstein :)
With a cast consisting of 'The Rock' and Rosamund Pike it could've hauled itself to the upper shelves of blockbusters but remained rooted to the bargain basement bin near the exit. The story is the familiar dodgy aliens rampaging around a science lab with the swat team sent in to rescue whoever is still alive. Enter stage left the zombies who are infact the remains of the scientists. The budget for special fx didnt extend to lighting so it is mainly shot in the dark to enhance the ambience. It is never easy to take a video game and turn it into a film* see streetfighter- the movie, resident evil of which the end result is generally a poor rendition of the in game video sequences without the fun of the game play. Doom incorporates a nasuea inducing fps game sequence towards the end of the film making me wonder why on earth I continued to watch this instead of spending an hour on the xbox. If you are a fan of video games to movie genre then give it a whirl but otherwise the experience is similar to playing your old childhood video games today and wondering why on earth you wasted so much time on them when you were young.

* except Hitman which was actually quite a good

Agent 47 did do a good job at it. Certain parts weren't great but all in all a good action flick about everyone's favourite bald assassin.

Also watched Tomorrowland recently. Don't bother.

I don't feel aggrieved by watching it like I did with fantastic four, but it wasn't inspiring. If you have time to kill and nothing else to do, it will pass the time. Just don't expect a great story or much cerebral stimulation

The Drop - with James Gandolfi low budget NewYork based movie. Strange start, but a watchable movie, based upon the way gangster money is moved around the city. Interesting characters made this movie for me, rather that the plot.

The 51st state / formula 51 depending on where you are based. A lead of cast including Samuel L jackson and Robert Carlyle hauls this film above expectations. I should mention the appearance of Meat Loaf and Rhys Ifans point towards the comedic direction of the plot. The story of a Kilt wearing American doing a multi million pound drug deal in Liverpool does sound a tad far fetched and the onscreen performances carries along the implausibility. Throw in Emily Mortimer as the gun for hire and a somewhat disfunctional story becomes mildly amusing for an hour and half. Frankly the ridiculous story line and farcical characters add to the charm ( think Trainspotting with Lock Stock and you wont be far off). The has comedy value all the way through and an it provides an amusing perspective of Liverpool. 7/10

Knock Knock - Eli Roth horror starring Keanu Reeves. A bit cringeworthy so I guess that makes it good horror but it's not grisly.

Hitting the apex - film about 6 riders in MotoGP. Not watched it all yet, it's quite long. Couldn't watch the footage of Simoncelli's death. Film is good so far tho - worth a watch.

Imitation game

A film about the Alan Turing's shenanigans in hut 8. Wonderful cast and quick paced movie about the dilemmas faced by Alan Turing over the world war 2 period. The viewer is thrust into the quandries faced by Turing both on a personal and God like level. Benedict starts off with a classic Sherlock persona but ingratiates himself to the viewer as he develops the character . It reiterates how badly he was treated and the immense work he contributed to the war effort and modern computers today. Not as grim as it sounds and quite reflective. 9/10
