I snuck out this morning for a quick 5k. Day off today, going to a wedding. Anyhow took Qark with me, alas not my phone. Plus - Its lighter than the Gamma, it's damn bright. Minus - Its a fraction on the bulky side compared to the gamma as its all upfront. Making it bounce a bit. Not excessively but noticably. It doesn't have that foam bit the Gamma does behind the light. I did notice the Gamma feels fractionally more comfortable. I might look out for something to put there myself. Maybe I'll just get used to it. Happy with my purchase, but a couple of small niggles to tweak/adapt to. 4 1/2 out of 5.

As Strava keeps telling me I need new shoes, I gave in today as we were at Freeport. Alas I was swayed by my wife and kids on colour choice. Same shoes as before as I really like them - Asics Gel-FujiTrabuco 6, £54.00.
But much brighter.

Finally got Flickr to work.

Tring RC Ridgeway run for me today - 15km of mud and hills. Unfortunately, I fell apart after mile 7 and literally limped to the end. Not my best effort, but enjoyable. Slightly less rain than last year, too! :)

Well done for getting out there.
I didn't get out over the weekend, far far too much alcohol consumed Friday evening. Way too messy.
Never great when you wake up the following morning and then throw up.....

Good work guys, on getting out there!

Nice looking shoes Martin, be interested to hear how they perform.

Managed to get out of the door for my first run for a week and a half (https://www.strava.com/activities/2787657796)! Just my short, local loop, but was able to get through Coronation Woods before the day's forestry work started there.

The Relive video (https://www.relive.cc/view/vE6JdgYQyxv)

Seem to be emerging from a bit of a dark patch and the run definitely helped.

Gary, as you know running is a massive help with mood. My missus says she can see a noticeable improvement in my mood since joining the running club. So get your shoes back on and go for another loop.

They are the exact same shoes I just replaced so should perform well, I am a big fan of Asics. They fit me well are comfortable straight out of the box. And they have a store in Freeport retail outlet. So are cheap!

Got out last night for another dark wet loop of Stansted. 6.5 miles.
My shoes aren't quite so new now after a few fields and a bit of forest. Slightly less shiny, I much prefer them like this.

I even sussed out the lack of rear light on the Qark, as you say Gary, I too like the rear light of the gamma.

I remembered I had a set of small bike lights that I used to carry when I commuted, just in case the main ones died. A couple of small cable ties and jobs a goodun. Back to all-round visibility.

Great mod for the back light there Martin!

Got out this evening for a very enjoyable dark run around my local short loop (https://www.strava.com/activities/2791715326) with a couple of friends. Three people, five dogs, headtorches, hills, mud and forest. Superb!.

I got out last night with BSRC, it was a pacer evening, I went with the 8.30 group. It was a nice steady run around Bishops Stortford. 6.8 miles just under 57 mins.

I had numerous comments on how effective the rear light was, a few people said they planned to copy my mod.

Out for an afternoon run of 4.2 miles on local trails (https://www.strava.com/activities/2799006691) at short notice with a friend. She brought all three of her dogs over so I ran her very friendly Kelpie/Collie, Harry, in tandem with Mabel. A great team the two of them made too.

A great run in a mix of warm sunshine and cold showery rain.

I got out last night, my eldest was on a Scout evening at Hatfield Forest. So I thought I'd get a run in.
I hadn't quite thought it through just how dark it was going to be. My son even said " Are you sure you want to do this?"

Yeah why not.
Lets just say apart from 20 Scouts who played games practically in the car park, I was the only nutjob in the forest. Well the only person, damn I never knew there were so many critters there.
By day you are lucky to see anything, by night every bush had at least one set of glowing eyes peering out. There were more deer there than I had thought.
Seeing a badger (alive) up close was pretty cool.

It was a little eery.

I managed just under 5 miles but had then had enough. It didn't help that 2 mins into the run I remembered just how slippery a board walk gets when wet. Shame I hadn't remembered before my foot touched it.
I went down like a sack of ****. My hip doesn't like me today.

Still it was an experience.

Out for a social run with 3 other Powys Canicross members on Saturday. Forgot to take my Garmin with me so a couple of the others tagged me on their runs. Really enjoyable run of just under 5 miles in the grounds of Gregynog Hall. (https://www.strava.com/activities/2805561128)

Heading out to Chirk Castle tomorrow morning for the Trust10K. Lovely trail run although there’s a fairly long and brutal uphill section at the end of each 5k lap. It may also be a bit soggy underfoot!

I’ll remember to take my Garmin with me this time.....

Well, that was a fabulous run in the sun. The wind was pretty keen though so I was glad to have worn a base layer. Loads of folks there from Canicross Clwyd, someone from Shropshire Canicross, and me from Powys Canicross. It was good to see so many people running with dogs.

I remembered to take my Garmin too. Shame I forgot to charge it though, the battery was totally flat. :-(

10k altogether, on glorious trails through woodland and across fields. The ground wasn’t too bad either with just a few muddy sections in a woodland area, which is often muddy anyway.

So glad I got out to do this now.

I’m off to put my Garmin on charge!

Two weeks after the Ridgeway race where my knee/leg went, it's still giving me trouble. I did manage to get out for a 10 mile long slow run, though - the longest since September 2017 - but needed to walk down(!) some of the hills, which is different.

Well that was hard. The hardest one so far by a long way. 12 kilometres in the freezing cold running through the muddiest field you could imagine and that was without the obstacles all 90 of them thrown in for good measure. I don't think my body will forget just how cold that bloody lake was. Deathslide into lake followed by swim across. BBBRRRRRRR. It was freezing. Oh and the ****ing rain and 50-60 mile an hour winds.

I almost wore my Garmin, but took it off just before the start. I didn't fancy killing it just yet.
Third event this year so I qualified to claim my Mudallion too. I post's up a couple of pics once Flickr stops messing about. It doesn't seem to accept things off my phone since the last update.

Nice medals Martin, but the words "Survivor" and "Mudallion" are sufficient to dissuade me. You're a braver man than me!

Some of my canicross friends took part in the recent Dogstacle event which was literally (human) knee deep in mud. The dogs were all mad keen despite the mud being almost up to the necks of some of them.
Another couple took part in the recent European Canicross Championships in Belgium. Despite Belgium allegedly being flat the whole race site looked like the Battle of the Somme with big hills!

Just seen this on an email from Nuclear Races.

THE FINAL FALLOUT OF THE YEAR WAS BRUTAL!
We can do a lot of things but we can't control mother nature. The wind & rain took us to new levels of mudness today.
We promised you a beast for the final Nuclear of the year & it delivered - the Fallout really DOES bite.
This race was about survival. YOU did it & can now claim legendary NUCLEAR status.

I'm glad it wasn't just me that thought it was hard.

First run for just over a week, my short local loop (https://www.strava.com/activities/2842205188), and nice to get out there.
Turned my ankle when I stepped on one of Mabel’s toys, a red rubber ball about half an hour before running. Painful for a few minutes after doing it and then fine, no twinges or stiffness, so I ran. About an hour and a half after my run while heading into Shrewsbury on the motorbike it started hurting. Now I can’t walk on it. Hope it clears up quickly!

Ouch. I've had a bad ankle on and off for about four years now. As Darren says, take it easy - I think a lot of my problem is adaptations you make when running through an injury becoming habit and worse long-term.

I got out today on the track (it was also the club's tea night!) It went a lot better than last week (and the weekend) so things are slowly improving. I'm very sore now, though. :-)

Thanks Martin. Amazingly considering how much pain it was giving me yesterday, I woke this morning to find it almost back to normal. It's now pretty much sorted itself although I get a slight twinge if I put my foot down too hard. I'll give it a few days before I run again though.
Not allowed to take Ibuprofen as it reacts with the small dose of Methatrexate I'm on for psoriatic arthritis. Sigh...

A long neck buff worn on the head may work Darren, as you can pull up like a hat if it's cold and roll it down a bit to let some heat escape when you've warmed up.

First run* for possibly a year today. Last time I left it for a while I got back into it surprisingly easily and was amazed how I'd retained some fitness. This time was a very different story. I don't run often even when I'm into it, but do a usual 5k with not too many problems. This time however... didn't even get that far and felt very sick! The cold air and breathing issues from working in the city centre again aren't helping. Feeling good now from having done it though. I love how it leaves you feeling for the rest of the day.

Aaargh! Finally, after a fortnight managed to get out for a run with Mabel on the trails around one of my local loops. Just under 4.5 miles of muddy slipperyness with a short stretch of necessary metalled back lane (https://www.strava.com/activities/2882859440). More of a jog than a run with its attendant slow time(!) but feeling all the better for getting out.

Not as cold as I thought it was going to be. I felt a bit overdressed with a baselayer top, running T, and waterproof shell. The hat and neck buff were removed after a mile!

Gary your pics look nice. Glad you got out, the constant cold, drizzle and general darkness is making it harder to just get out the door. Getting home of an evening cold and wet from my commute doesn't really make me want to get out a do it all again for a run.
Got out today for my second ever interval session. Which was hard. However as I'm an idiot I told my missus who was there with the boys, that I'd run home after. Moments after she drove off I realised my error. That was an even harder 5 miles, my right knee currently doesn't like me. Ah well you live and learn.

garynortheast

Rest that knee! Well done though on the extra 5 miles after the interval training. It all ups the fitness levels!

The cold, dark, and dreary mornings and evenings stop me getting out so readily too. Once I'm out I'm OK. If I do a morning run the best way for me is to get running kit on as soon as I get out of bed, then, when the girls have left for college I can go straight out the door. Putting kit on when I get up is like making the commitment to go.

Just got all my kit ready for tomorrows Trust10K. Need to be in the car and away by 7.45am for registration and a 9am run start. The weather looks ok so far; cloudy but dry and about 8°C.

Mabel's been pretty quiet since we got back, except for a period where she stood right in front of me and stared at me till I gave her her dinner!

Good pace you set there and pleased you got round without hip or ankle pain.

Excellent afternoon run of 7.5 miles with a friend, from Welshpool leisure centre, along the canal and then up to a nearby trig point, before descending to a point 3 miles further up the canal and then back to Welshpool.

Sigh....forgot to take my Garmin with me - again! Fortunately my running buddy took hers, so she’s going to send me the gpx file so I can stick it up on Strava.

Some bits of the route were really muddy and following Mabel was like following a vehicle in the wet; I was plastered up to my thighs in the muddy spray she was chucking up behind her!

Mabel is crashed in her bed, and my calves are pretty achy. Around 9 miles on Sunday and 7.5 today have left their mark. I need to get out more (as the expression goes).

I’ll post a link to the route when I get the gpx.

A good weekend of running for me - I managed to run on both days, which I've been avoiding for a long time now, so another sign things are heading in the right direction, I hope. parkrun on Saturday and a local cross-country Sunday League match today.

Unfortunately not managed to get out at all for sometime. Working yesterday to try and catch up on what I didn't manage to do during this past week from hell. I really do need to get out, desperately need the headspace. Looking at sometime during this next week though before I'll get the chance.

That sounds good. If ever I were to consider a marathon it would have to be a trail marathon. The thought of running that far on tarmac fills me with dread (and Mabel wouldn't be too pleased either I'd think!)

Gary I hope you get out.
I have my 7 am 14 mile Sunday Social run, which I am looking forward too.

Although I am not liking my Garmin at the moment.
It's not very supportive. With a training status of "Overreaching". God knows what it'll say after Sunday. "Near death, stop running".

I'm really wanting to run 1000 miles this year, I didn't make it last year - only got to 668. So I must try harder this year.
Up to 36 so far - still a long way to go!

I managed to get a quick 5 miler in after work, I'm hoping to get back into my Friday eve routine of running as soon as I get home. I even did the old route. It was nice. Shame about stacking it trying to outwit gravity whilst running across a muddy camber. Gravity won. I looked like I'd just done my own mudrun.

"Unproductive", ever so better than "Overreaching".

15 miles done on Sunday morning, being honest this distance is a little out of my comfort zone. I could feel why my watch was telling me I'm being unproductive!

Hopefully in a month or so both me and the watch will feel better about it.
(At the moment, I'm not sure how the hell I'm going to get around 26.2 miles - probably much slower)

After last nights run, I have clocked 105.6 miles so far this year, and I'm hoping I can sneak out on Friday eve.
But Happy with that as I'm already beating last year - even if only by a mile.
I am aiming to do 1000 miles this year, I started last year with the same goal, but didn't quite make it.
And only got to around 664.

I'm going to try harder this year. Plus I have the Cambridge Half Marathon and the North Norfolk Marathon to train for.

What a week! Back from holiday, I had a massive bout of food poisoning on Tuesday/Wednesday - lost 8lb over night. Recovered now, but probably weakened from it. But, I had 20 miles on my plan and gave it a go - big mistake. I can barely walk now.

Ran 6 miles to parkrun, plus parkrun, but had to walk the three miles home. I have a 30 mile "race" in four weeks, which I'm really not up for.

I'm now seriously considering giving up this running lark, or at least running to a schedule.

Don’t give it up but do expect to reduce in both distance and frequency if you are unwell. That sounds like a really nasty bout of food poisoning and I would personally have waited till I was properly recovered before running.

Ease back into it and you’ll be fine. Don’t be afraid to drop the race if you aren’t ready for it, no sense in completely wrecking your body for a race.

I've not posted here in a while because I've hardly been running due to ankle and knee problems. So, I was woefully underprepared for the 30 mile race yesterday.

A really pretty course, but due to the flooding, some of the paths were waist-deep in water last week. Thankfully it had all receded, but left an unimaginable level of mud to get through. Anyway, I survived and finished before the 9-hour cutoff.

Definitely, will be steady enough for a while yet..

Turns out, I'm an overpronator and needed orthotics via the NHS.. I now have correction in all of my shoes, from the foot up the next structure that can show symptoms is the knee and ultimately the ITB and hip..

Haven't had a flare up since April which was caused by walking 10mi+ a day in work so I'm quietly hoping it stays that way :)

It's so good to get a diagnosis - I've had ankle problems for four or five years now, and no one I've seen have been able to pinpoint the problem. I think I know where my weakness is now, but I need to take time off to let it strengthen, which isn't happening this year :-/

Took a trip to A&E and a 7 week wait for a podiatry referral. In the meantime Id bought new insoles off the shelf and within a few days the issue was gone. I could feel my ITB rubbing over the ischial tuberosity (sp) every step, things had greatly escalated from just feet
